wreckimnaked··on Understanding C by learning assembly
I mean, it's always useful to know what's happening under the hood, but it's not always realistic to expect that to happen. I don't think the average C programmer need to know assembly any more than the average Ruby programmer needs to know C.

I disagree. Given that C exposes you to some hardware details that are abstracted when developing in some higher level language such as Ruby, for instance having to deal with overflow on signed/unsigned types and register variables (I know that compilers will mostly ignore that, but it's still a language feature).

The average Ruby programmer, on it's turn, can perfectly live without knowing C programming. A more accurate analogy would be to a Ruby programmer to know about the language implementation being using (MRI, JRuby, Rubinius, etc.)

wreckimnaked··on An Apology of Sorts: Functional Languages Are (Still) Overrated
Seems nice. The only problem of using it instead of Nailgun for the Clojure development workflow is that starting a new instance of the JVM would mean to re-evaluate all the code, and not only the modified definitions.
wreckimnaked··on The Multiple Index Problem (Clojure)
There's no way to use Refs or Vars for indexing the same thing from two different places? You'll sure introduce mutability, but you'd still be able to keep a more Clojure-ish style than using an intermediate index.
wreckimnaked··on An Apology of Sorts: Functional Languages Are (Still) Overrated
I use Nailgun[1] with vimclojure[2] and lein-tarsier[3] to avoid the JVM startup pain. You'll end up with a JVM instance (server) running all time and the possibility to evaluate code from many different clients like REPLs and the editor itself.

Changes to the code just need to be evaluated again to override the previous function definitions. It ends up being a really fast workflow.

Yeah, Chromium on OS X is also getting identified as Chrome.

wreckimnaked··on The truth about Goobuntu: Google's in-house desktop Ubuntu Linux
And installing yaourt[1] makes using PKGBUILDs from AUR and ABS, and binary packages from the repos amazingly transparent and fast. I've never heard of such a level of flexibility on package management.

For instance, you can install the precompiled chromium from the repos with yaourt -S chromium; if you need to recompile it from ABS, throw a yaourt -Sb chromium and you are done. To install the binary build from AUR, yaourt -S chromium-browser-bin will do it.

Maybe it's a German thing; it reminded me of "Goodbye Lenin!" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0301357/

There's some debate on this: http://queue.acm.org/detail.cfm?id=1053354
wreckimnaked··on Hate Java? Maybe you should hate the industries stuck in the 50's.

    5) It scalability is a joke. I've worked as a Java contractor at a number of places and what a PERL/PHP/Python solution can get done in 5 boxes, it takes Java 30-40 boxes. This is NOT an exagerration.
I wonder why Twitter is moving their Ruby codebase to Java and Facebook is building a JVM backend of their PHP compiler .
wreckimnaked··on Ask HN: Looking for examples of "really great code"?
Well, scientific metrics of code quality may be more related to software design than the code craftsmanship itself.

A good experience would be get 4 experienced developers to read and evaluate a piece of code; that'd raise some interesting practical aspects of their evaluation of its goodness.

wreckimnaked··on Ask HN: Looking for examples of "really great code"?
'Good code' is more of common sense than personal preference. Maybe you should have a look at one of the cited examples ;)
wreckimnaked··on Are functional languages inherently slow?
You're right, point taken, I clearly misused the word; it has nothing to do with any personal opinion. I was using 'biased' thinking about its meaning on the Machine Learning context [1].

My intention was to state that idiomatic code is not necessarily the most performant one, and that the codes used in the benchmarks game may contain some not very idiomatic optimization codes [2].

That said, it tends to evaluate the implementation of a certain compiler, and not exactly how the constructs and concepts of those languages result on the measured performance.

wreckimnaked··on Castle Story by Sauropod Studio - the next Minecraft?
When you say "the next Minecraft", are you referring to the some innovation on game dynamics or to the fact that it is an attempt to mimic Minecraft's gameplay style?

wreckimnaked··on OnLive comes to Ouya, Controller Makes Full Frontal Debut
> This could be solved very easily by picking some symbols to go along with the colors. Of course, our patent and trademark laws are ridiculous and it's highly likely that Microsoft has already patented the letters X, Y, A, and B...

That'd be a shame. X, Y, A and B sounds more Super Nintendo than Xbox.

wreckimnaked··on Are functional languages inherently slow?
for instance: http://shootout.alioth.debian.org/u32/performance.php?test=c...

needless to say that all benchmarks will be very biased, as idiomatic code is not necessarily the most optimized one.

wreckimnaked··on Gabe Newell Wants to Support Linux, Because Windows 8 is a 'Catastrophe'
Steam got much of it's traction due to the great Valve games. The audience there just grew faster.
wreckimnaked··on Towards a Bundler plugin system
This is pretty much the same idea of Leiningen's plugin system that Clojure developers are used to. It's a great functionality, but it is a move towards a more generic project automation tool functionality, something that unites Bundler, Rails generator scripts and Rake tasks when it comes to Rails projects, for instance.
wreckimnaked··on Microsoft comes under fire for five-figure Xbox 360 “patch fee”
Hundreds of thousands of people could play Braid on their PCs, how does that differs from playing Fez?

Is not about how many people connect their PCs to their televisions, but about how they enjoy playing their games. IMHO that does not justify the Microsoft exclusivity strategy.

wreckimnaked··on Microsoft comes under fire for five-figure Xbox 360 “patch fee”
I frankly never understood the real reason why Fez was released exclusively for xbox. From the outsider perspective it seems like a very bad decision when it comes to a game as hyped as this one was.
