wqtz··on Students made Oxford murder capital of late medieval England, research suggests
Taika's 2nd - the 3rd Thor movie and Gunn's 2nd - the 2nd Guardians movie was quite bad IMO. I think Marvel could do a better job by having directors who direct only one movie and quit. Taika is a good director but he is not a good "serial director". He is great with original ideas.

But Marvel being a serial franchise by the metric of average performance the Russo brothers are the most talented director(s).

wqtz··on Students made Oxford murder capital of late medieval England, research suggests
Netflix is going to adopt this idea right now. It is going to be produced by either one of those comedy-type directors of Marvel cinematic universe Taika something Gunn or one of their frequent collaborators or siblings.

The story will spin around a bunch of college students who come from different lower to middle class background. There is a going to be Indian or Pakistani girl who came here to pursue higher studies. She is constantly ridiculed by the upper caste Indian students who are now part of the British elite class society. Then you have an Irish or some kind of GB region person who is also socially suffering. Then you have your usual group of social misfits. They share a common identity of being misfits of those times that is coincidentally representative of the times of present.

Then someone among them kills some elitist upper class royalty type accidentally who was trying to abuse that person. Ah yeah, this going to happen after a party where those misfits are going to dance in a certain way to certain music that they know will popular in TikTok. Then the group bands to together to come up with a serial killer identity to hide the crime. They don't kill people but the do things that make people there is serial killing going on.

Then you have your usual sheninigans. In season 1 a professor joins in their sheninigans who was relucatant. In season 1, finale the professor was almost caught. In season 2, someone actually kills and innocent person and does something drastic in the season finale. In season 3, the professor is killed and one of those misfits has near death experience. In season 4 Jack the ripper is introduced and season 6 part 1 finale Sherlock holmes makes an appearance. People petition RDJ to play sherlock holmes and the famous marvel alumni producer even drop a hint it might could be, but it ends not being RDJ but a random actor. But Jude law or the UK office guy makes a cameo in season 7. Then in after an abyssmal season 8 and the series ends in season 9, with Netflix says a spin off series is going to be launched in the metaverse platform that they recently acquired called Snap, which will attempt to provide an interactive detective and crime investigation experience platform that dynamically changes the TV show as the users participate.

wqtz··on Scrum is a cancer
I have been taking a closer look at project management and product management in the last few months. Coming from the programming side, I thought technical product manager rule the world, and thought everything that is technically led is glorious.

Then I had a very personal conversation with hardcore project manager from non-tech side. He told me that, I got the idea of management of all wrong.

Project manager is an operator where the engineers are nothing more than machine. Your standard engineer is not interested or even care about business goals. They are doing a job, they like to be told what is expected from them, they like to be told what deliverable is. Senior engineers can give an estimate of delivery date, but most don't. They are essentially cogs in the machine and managers are expected to birth products from them.

About those experienced devs: In an manufacturing plant there are things that just works and you don't fiddle with them. Or else, they break and you have to get a brand new thing. Most of these senior engineer with business focus are difficult to manage and they have an expiry date on them. You are lucky to get one, but you have to count the days until they leave for better pay. Moreover, you don't want programmers interested in business side as they get passionate about things that don't concern them which is obviously business side things. So, you need engineers to work but not get ideas.

---

He told a bunch of those stories, but it seems these stories are like if you are in the business, you probably know already type things. He really doesn't buy the idea that "software engineers" are special type of engineers, he said, management hasn't change in centuries, people just use different rhetoric that's all.

wqtz··on My journey away from the JAMstack
Okay, I probably didn't understand JAMstack, even though I say to folks that I use JAMstack. I am not a professional web developer, but this is the reason why I thought I was using JAMstack:

The reason I like JAMstack is because: - It is free. - It adds modularity to a static site. - If you want to provide an API service and your website just makes the API data look pretty.

It is free.

Netlify is free to sign up without a credit card. What else would you like me to mention? Everything else costs $5 a month or more. I am cheap. Cloudflare is free, Firebase is free, etc.

Modularity in a static site generator.

You know what is really cool and just works? Good static site generators. But sometimes, I would like to add some technical features to it, for SEO or fun. I would like to add components that focus on server-side computation a bit. However, it is not easy to do when you start with a static site.

So, what I will do is simply write an API and connect it to the site with a simple API call. I can handle all the complicated tasks in the backend and send some data to my website, where it will be displayed in a table.

If you want to provide an API service and have your website display the API data in a visually appealing way, this may not apply to most people. However, in my line of work, I used to focus on building APIs exclusively. People were not interested about the how site looked. They sometimes required authentication, a table, and some visualization and sorting features.

To simplify the process, I would handle most of the tasks on the backend, with the website mainly fetching data from the API. It would consist of templating syntax and occasionally handle state management, as it was not practical to filter the data on the backend.

---

So, that is how I used JAMstack. Can I do better? Eh, not really. I am not a web developer. I build APIs that sometimes need some visual representation. With Netlify Auth, Netlify Function supporting Go, Cloudflare Pages, etc., I don't see myself throwing in the towel on JAMstack, even though I might be missing the entire point here.

Embracing the two-year cycles that web developers have about everything being bad and everything being shit is not for me. And yes, this is a cycle, and this is a fit. You will see after two years, some dude with 120K followers on Twitter will announce "we have re-embraced everything that is wrong with PHP because of 4chan memes, and here is this web5 stack that will fix everything."

In web development, the only people I respect are those who have been using a 5-20 dollar/month VPS for more than a decade. They are not on Twitter, don't check HN except for weekends and they don't even do webstack-evangelism.

wqtz··on Ask HN: Build a startup in the US while on H-1B Visa?
If an H1b worker has a company based on their origin country, can't they legally work behind that company?

If their origin company is participating in the contract with an entity of the host country and the finances and transactions are all based on the origin country does that violate any work visa rules?

Technically, the worker is not participating in a income activity and the income he is generating is based and limited to his origin country. If they don't bring any money from their origin company to the host country, wouldn't that be legal?

But then again, ICE tends kick people off at a drop of a hat. So, really need to know if this process is absolutely legal. Thank you.

wqtz··on Zero rupee note (2015)
Corruption is one of the fun things I enjoy thinking about.

People have to take a step back and realize this can NEVER be beat. Because corruption is a philosophical construct. We saw virtually incorruptible countries tied up in the financial recession that was fueled by greed. But it wasn't greed until it all came crashing down, before that it was a smart move.

So preachiness aside let me tell you story. So a friend of mine works in supply chain operations in a certain country. Surprisingly local supply chain professionals are paid comparatively low than their peers with similar skill and education. Yet supply chain type work are always the most deemed jobs in any industry. I asked him, what's the deal. So he just told me, people just makes up the "opportunity" cost by over invoicing and charging commissions to their favored vendors. I said what kind monitoring mechanism do the bosses have. They said usually none, but if they even have monitoring mechanism and get this, corrupt people will use the monitoring mechanism itself to weed out the ones who are honest! So, for the owners the cost corruption is just part of the cost production. They include the cost without much care.

Anyway, I am trying to convince him to open a startup with me to address this problem and apply to YC S22.

wqtz··on UCLA Study Finds Laughter in 65 Species, from Rats to Cows
Here is the paper >> https://gabryant.scholar.ss.ucla.edu/wp-content/uploads/site...

I was curious about how they were defining laughter? I am a bit skeptical to be honest about the idea of change in behavior when we apply something to animals that will trigger a laughter in human. We can't be sure if that change behavior is indicative of joy and expressed through the vocalization of laugher.

The paper seem to be (I have skimmed) focused on group dynamics to determine what is laughter. They indicate that how animals signals they were having joy by making vocalization and it indicates social play.

Here is a super cute video of how social play would work: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L2EmA_UwIM8

But I am not sure if the animals are laughing though.
