And Absolute Apple Photos app corrupts images absolutely.

wormius··on Folks, we have the best π
LOL as I'm reading the bit about the minimum (and before I get to the part linking the proof (which spawned the blog post)) my brain says "Ok, but have you done a formal proof extrapolating out to... maybe there's another dip, a pattern of dips..."

I haven't clicked the link, but I guess this is a well written blog post, since the place where I asked the question is precisely where they link to the paper. Nice.

wormius··on Why Wisconsin's county highways are lettered, not numbered (2019)
Growing up we never used "Road" we just said "County (letter)" Probably because the signs themselves never say Road or Highway (at least usually, back in the day, I haven't paid attention recently).

I like the system. It helps reduce confusion in terms of what the "main" (state/interstate) vs the local.

wormius··on Why Wisconsin's county highways are lettered, not numbered (2019)
No, but that's what they are ;)
wormius··on A brief history of the absurdities of the Soviet Union
1. Black Book of Communism

2. "Unborn"

Yeah, no.

I'm not saying USSR was a panacea or that Stalin did nothing wrong (Tankies are the fucking worst. I hung out on /r/communism for a while, and, as the kids used to say "gross").

I take writing like the OP with a HUGE grain of salt.

There are plenty of crimes and problems with what happened in the Soviet Union. Some of these were intentional by the leadership both before, during, and after Stalin. Some of these were self-owns (War Communism much?) some of these were forced errors (when doing battle one makes tough choices, and this includes in ideological/economic/actual war). Some of these were straight up evil policies (gulags, great purges, Katyn, etc...)

If someone can do real analysis I'm down, but once you start quoting Black Book of Communism, I know you're coming with an agenda and it's hard for me to take you in good faith. Especially if you're counting "The Unborn" - go on, just call the US a "Nazi Nation with the unborn holocaust" (I grew up in that shit, so saw the propaganda first hand).

wormius··on Steam, Itch.io are pulling ‘porn’ games. Critics say it's a slippery slope
Ganging up to enforce your political will is only bad when it's "the woke mob" but totally cool when it's my mob.

And idiots eat that shit up thinking fighting the woke mind virus is the real censorship, jumping straight into the arms of moralistic fascists like this.

I wish I knew how we failed. (I am "woke" but I disagree with mob tactics, and think it's done more harm than good, and there are a lot of disingenuous abusers of said ideology to boost their personal cred, chasing online clout over any substance. And plenty of the right-wingers will notice this, and "fight it" but fail to notice the same thing in their own side; because to them it's not about a principle it's about "punishing the bad guys" who don't like what I like).

"Cancel culture is bad akshully unless I'm the one cancelling you (c.f. bud light, etc...)"

wormius··on Steam, Itch.io are pulling ‘porn’ games. Critics say it's a slippery slope
Sex is an older institution for marriage. Or are there all these lizard weddings I've never seen. "Sexually reproducing animals, plants, fungi and protists "

Man, I can't wait to get invited to the next fungus wedding, seeing a little penis shaped mushroom with a little tophat, and the brides dress, why it must be a literal carpet on the forest floor so long and stretchy.

LOL this doesn't harm you int he slightest.

You should like, read a(actually man, from diverse positions, and not just your little right-wing fundie) psychology book and get out of your bible-thumping bubble.

Also - like... I absolutely hate cryptocurrency, but if this is what it comes to, then make that a payment option, and leave up the "bad naughty legal stuff" for us consenting adults to decide (but I know, it won't be legal for long as these reactionaries keep pummeling away at free speech while using the rhetoric of 'Free Speech' to gain further control of communication systems).

Just closed my dev acct (only had an old 2015 puzzle game I made, 2 sales, no huge deal personally), but decided to put my 4.57 where my mouth is (no payout, waaaaaaah, cuz 5 dollar minimum). And told them exactly why I am doing so.

Money talks, and it's one of the few ways I have to show my opposition. I hope others will do the same. It's sad, because itch is kinda one of the last few places for "indie" as a thing with the vibe of indies, at least (I mean they aren't Steam or the other big publishers). I'm surprised Epic didn't buy them out yet just like they did with Bandcamp. Probably next on the block.

Speak for yourself. Just say "virtue signaling" while you're at it. Some people have very real concerns, because they are actually affected, not some rich bloke who wants another big tax cut because all that matters is money and nothing else.

Some people march in the streets and write elected officials. Not everyone. Not everyone who posts publicly about politics engages in politics, but many of us do. And those of us affected most by the cuts are the most active I know. Because for us, it's not a hobby it's real life.

Heh, glad to see it, was gonna post this. Now you have it, do you want to use it. (bluff call time LOL). Being a bit facetious, don't get too offended at the joke, people. But yeah, Xonsh is the "python(ish) shell" option if that's what you want.

wormius··on GLP-1s are breaking life insurance
I was a heavy alcoholic, and the ability to quite drinking was... amazing. Now that I'm off, I just remind myself I never want to get back at that dark place, but I'm so very glad it made quitting just... happen. It's wild how easy it was. A little mental control in terms of "no, don't go to the liquor store" but it was habit more than physical addition at that point. This was with Rybelsus. Sober 4.5 years now. It was definitely not an intended side effect but I'm glad I was rx'd when I was. I was not in a good state.
wormius··on GLP-1s are breaking life insurance
Yeah, both Ozempic and Trulicity have automated systems like this, just press a button and pop. Is there even a way to hit a vein? The needle is not very deep (it's subcutaneous, just barely under the skin). And it's the stomach, which AFAIK, doesn't have a lot of exposed veins?

Either way super simple and quick. Fairly painless. I had a weird rash one time, but apart from that a total of about 15 injections haven't had any issues on either Ozempic or Trulicity in terms of injections. Others may have difficulties, but it's been super easy IMO.

wormius··on Let me pay for Firefox
I think this is the only way to properly handle the current situation, but I don't think market forces will be enough to do so without them still needing to rely on some external sources. I think the most I'd want to pay for a browser is 50 bucks. The odd thing is the web is basically the OS for 99% of what most people do. So in that sense it's WAY worth it.

I agree that Mozilla is problematic that past decade or so especially, but there is not a lot of other options. I do think it would be cool if buying Firefox as a product gave you a "voting share". 1 vote per user. I'm not sure how well that would work, but it would go a way to make it the browser of the people and not just "the org" which pushes whatever it wants on you regardless if you like it or not.

Everytime I try to get away from FF I find there's really not anything else out there at this point in time. Servo in theory "is coming" someday. But I am not holding my breath even though that would be my preferred option. Ladybird, well... I'm not keen on Andreas Kling's general approach to organization, but if it's a good browser that supports standards and plugins and has power to block ads, it would at least provide some flames to FF's feet to start taking things seriously and not just suck in Google's teat.

We have to get them away from Google. I'm honestly worried they're going to remove v2 at some point then we're really fucked. But I have to keep coming back, if only because I don't want to give Chromium based browsers more share, and since it's the source/main of derivatives, it's better IMO to just use that than a fork which may or may not break.

wormius··on SSHTron: A multiplayer lightcycle game that runs through SSH
Hell yeah that was fun. 174, high of 185 in that session. But never got close to the 174 which was when I wasn't aware of what I was doing. The game played better without me, I think. Like when I get confused in a fighting game and somehow do better then. LOL.

Nice project!

wormius··on The startling rise of disability in America (2013)
You're the one making the claim and assumption and "gut feeling" so it sounds like YOU are the one needing actual data for your "gut feelings".

Sorry this is the same bullshit people do when they see a person able to stand for a few hours and say "WHY ARE THEY ON DISABILITY" and ignoring the rest of the time they aren't seeing, or the people recovering. This is just hearsay, and since you're the one making these claims, then it behooves YOU to provide the proof.

But it's a nice little racket, make a claim and then demand those who deny it provide the proof. That's now how science or respectable arguments work.

This whole thread is full of such bullshit. And it's so people can feel superior to those who they think are scamming the system (in an ever increasing need to "crack down" on those who "abuse" the system (slowly killing it over time, or until you can get a DOGE in and ransack it like a viking ship plundering coastal communities).

Anyways, citation needed, since you're the one making the claims.

wormius··on The way of code: Rick Rubin
Yeah - is this THE Rick Rubin? Is there another Rick Rubin? Is this just taking the idea of his quote as inspiration and turning it into code? Has he had the time to step back from producing to learn JS and recontextualize the Tao Te Ching into this? What is up with this site?

EDIT: Found it: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/rick-rubin-on-art-life...

(would be nice if the original person posting this on git or wherever put a link to this so we had an idea wtf is going on)
