workhere-io··on Ask HN: What are you using Go for?
It's been running for 7 months without a crash and without leaking memory, serving several million requests/day.

Sounds cool. What kind of server are you running this on?

workhere-io··on Ask HN: What programming language will you learn in 2014?
Go.
workhere-io··on HipHop VM: now at 98.5% PHP framework parity, 16% faster
On paper the lack of consistency is a problem. In reality your editor will autocomplete the function name and tell you its arguments, so it's really not that big of a deal. I mostly hear non-PHP programmers complain about it.
workhere-io··on Ask HN: Python or PHP?
The only tangible advantage that PHP has these days is in being able to be deployed pretty much everywhere for fairly cheaply.

I mostly use Python these days, and yet I'd have to disagree strongly that easy deployment is PHP's only advantage. Outside of places like Silicon Valley it's a lot easier to find PHP programmers than Python programmers. On top of that many of the PHP programmers will be relatively cheap to hire. And you can get everything from novice developers to senior developers with a lot of experience.

workhere-io··on Amazon RDS for PostgreSQL
Note that AWS' PostgreSQL offering is more expensive than its MySQL counterpart.

Industrial espionage is a very real thing with very real risks for larger companies. Here is one example of how NSA could use (and may have used) the data they're collecting to help American economic interests: http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20130909/04383424450/latest...
workhere-io··on Amazon WorkSpaces
The Guardian, Reuters, et al have written about this.

workhere-io··on Amazon WorkSpaces
I'm not American. And awareness is first step.
workhere-io··on Amazon WorkSpaces
I actually think that the fact that NSA's spying isn't just used for anti-terrorism purposes but also for industrial espionage is news to some people - even on HN. And it's extremely relevant to decision makers who are considering Amazon WorkSpaces.
workhere-io··on Amazon WorkSpaces
Cool! NSA's industrial espionage is so much easier for them to perform when you store your company data directly on American servers.

workhere-io··on Ask HN: What is your favorite gmail alternative?
FastMail, while an Australian company, is hosted in the US.
workhere-io··on Ask HN: What is your favorite gmail alternative?
http://www.gandi.net/ : 1 GB IMAP account included with domains - hosted in France. Another alternative (hosted in the US) is FastMail (see my review here: http://blog.workhere.io/my-experience-with-fastmail-as-a-gma...).

As for IMAP clients, I like http://airmailapp.com/.

workhere-io··on In Almost Every European Country, Bikes Are Outselling New Cars
There is a 180% tax on cars in Denmark which is a pretty major disincentive for driving a vehicle.

True, but Danes buy cars nonetheless (especially if they have kids). It's fairly typical to only have one car per family, though.

I have a friend who bought a used VW Passat wagon (5 or 6 years old) in Denmark for $90,000 USD.

A used Passat from 2008 will cost you roughly $30,000 USD [1]. Expensive, I know, but nowhere near $90,000.

workhere-io··on In Almost Every European Country, Bikes Are Outselling New Cars
It's significant when you look at the numbers of people who commute on their bike daily rather than their car. In Copenhagen something like 50% of adults ride their bike to work. I'm sure it's the same in e.g. the Netherlands.
workhere-io··on Installing and setting up OS X Mavericks for Python development
I had tons of issues trying to get Postgres to work on my Mac

Did you try http://postgresapp.com ?

workhere-io··on Installing and setting up OS X Mavericks for Python development
Why use extra RAM on Vagrant when your Mac OS X is a full-featured Unix OS? Don't get me wrong, I know that the more complicated your setup gets, the more it would make sense to use Vagrant - but if you're just developing a CRUD Flask / Django app with PostgreSQL, you might as well just install Postgres.app and develop locally.
workhere-io··on Germany wants a German Internet as spying scandal rankles
I'm not denying that the US democracy is broken; I'm countering ithkuil's argument that since countries aren't human they shouldn't exhibit moral behavior.
workhere-io··on Germany wants a German Internet as spying scandal rankles
Depends on which country you're talking about.
workhere-io··on Germany wants a German Internet as spying scandal rankles
Countries are run by humans, and in a democracy we can and should expect politicians to do what's right for citizens and to behave ethically.
workhere-io··on Ask HN: Which MacBook Pro model is best for iOS app and web development?
For web development a MacBook Air will do just fine, even with 4 GB RAM. Screen size shouldn't matter, you're probably going to hook the laptop up to an external monitor anyway.
workhere-io··on Project Shield
They didn't just collect wi-fi names, they also collected other forms of data, some of which could be considered private. http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/2013/09/googles-wifi-wireta...
workhere-io··on Poll: Where are you currently living?
Now we're getting into semantics, but the point is, it says "including", and you can't "include" Finland and Iceland into Scandinavia. That would be like saying "North America (including Brazil and Chile)".

You could, however, say, Scandinavia PLUS Finland and Iceland - but that's not what OP wrote.

workhere-io··on Project Shield
The problem is he's wrong and has presented no compelling evidence at all.

The Guardian and every other major news outlet seemed to think his evidence was compelling.

workhere-io··on Project Shield
Here's a Snowden video in which he explains it (scroll to the bottom of the article): http://politiken.dk/udland/ECE2108923/usas-spioner-overvaage...
workhere-io··on Project Shield
Using your argument I could say that if you leave your laptop unattended, it's my right to steal it.

The people who left their wi-fi open didn't do it on purpose, and didn't want Google to access their information.

workhere-io··on Project Shield
Which Google repeatedly vehemently denied.

Probably because they're forced to do so by the authorities, like Lavebit was. So it becomes a question of who you are going to trust: Snowden (who has nothing to gain by lying) or Google (who is required by law to lie about it and risks losing a lot of money if their customers lose faith in them). I know who I trust in this case.

workhere-io··on Project Shield
Call me cynical

Cynicism is warranted when it comes to Google. The fact that they gave NSA direct access to their systems; the fact that their Street View cars collected personal information through wi-fi networks, etc. means that "Don't be evil" is just a facade.

workhere-io··on Project Shield
Snowden mentioned Google as one of the companies that provides direct access to its backend to NSA - meaning that NSA can access information on Google users without needing a court order.
