worker_person··on The Psychology of not wanting to know (2017) [pdf]
For deeper learning, get a delusional spouse that ignores any reality other than the one they like.

You'll wish you ignored this line of reasoning.

worker_person··on Why the full stack engineer is problematic (2020)
Older programmers are mostly white males.

Lots of people don't like to hire those anymore.

I hired in at one place, was informed afterwards that it was only because they were so desperate that they hired me despite my demographics. Was reminded repeatedly on my sins of being a white male.

worker_person··on Why the full stack engineer is problematic (2020)
I spent a couple years at a place where everyone was expected to be a master of everything including Kubernetes, and handle customer support.

Absolutely nothing of value was accomplished. By the time a person started to get decent at Kubernetes and frontend and backend and support they would find a better job with more realistic expectations.

So we basically we were paying people to learn for a year, then they would leave.

worker_person··on Would 1950s Living Standards Save Us?
Look at China to see where all this tech is headed.

One party rule. Anyone that disagrees with the party is silenced.

worker_person··on Would 1950s Living Standards Save Us?
To be fair, a lot of cities in Europe had been blown up 10 years earlier.

America was in the unique position of ending the world with no mainland damage.

worker_person··on Sue Big Oil
You're joking right? He has been killing off pipelines, suspending leases, increasing regulations.

worker_person··on Sue Big Oil
Get rid of oil in a rapid fashion, and we go the route of Venezuela.

Getting rid of oil is the goal of the current Administration. They are having some success by making it difficult as possible.

Now we have a huge mess from it and elections are coming up, so goal is to blame oil for the problems caused by the Administration.

If you want to get off oil because you believe it's bad for environment. That is a respectable position. But there is a huge political price to pay when the poor in the country are suffering now from it.

worker_person··on Infants' sense of pain is recognized, finally (1987)
Fully agree. Spent 5 years going on and off Tramadol. If I found myself craving it I would stop for a month. I was basically in bed in pure agony during those weeks off. I've seen others that literally kidnap their own mothers to get opioids.

Eventually found LDN and that stopped the pain.

worker_person··on Infants' sense of pain is recognized, finally (1987)
Was being given opioids for chronic pain (nerve pain from autoimmune). but not consistently, so I'd often run out.

I was constantly pushing doctors to try alternate treatments so I can deal with actual issue rather then take pain meds. They had no interest. Took me 3 years to finally get a prescription to LDN, which finally worked for me.

worker_person··on Japan asteroid probe finds 23 amino acids, researchers confirm
Large fans? Or if they are spinning, wouldn't air tend to want to stay in place while the ground moves, causing a breeze?

Ir maybe the Newtype are people that evolved to thrive in oxygen rich environment. :)

worker_person··on Houston moved 25k people from the streets into homes of their own
Like 4/5th of the country is fairly brutal in summer and / or winter.
worker_person··on Houston moved 25k people from the streets into homes of their own
Yep. Moved into a house. Gas line wasn't installed correctly. Nearly killed me and family. Left a couple of us with permanent injuries.

We broke lease and moved out. Made it impossible to get into anyplace decent since we had abandoned the lease and refused to pay them to get it off our record.

Surprisingly lawyers were completely useless. Unless a doctor certifies that gas caused medical issues they won't touch the issue.

Screw mega rental companies.

worker_person··on Why We’re Sticking with Ruby on Rails at Gitlab
In the normal case. When you start a test it loads from fixtures into its own database.

Any test can make use of what is in that database. So you tend to put a bunch of stuff that is useful for most tests.

If a specific test needs an unusual setup, then it can do whatever is needed to load data. Generate data, load extra fixtures, etc. You can do this on a per test basis, or a group of tests, etc.

An option is to reload everything between each test. Not recommended.

Normal usage is to rollback any changes a test did, so that each test has a clean slate. This tends to be plenty fast. Parallelism can usually be done.

If speed is still a concern, you can get fancy and load up multiple databases with fixtures and divide tests between them. Maybe have 2-8 sets of tests running at same time.

It's been a few years, but I've inherited test suites that take 14 hours and been able to get them down to a few minutes with above techniques.

Something like Guard can be setup to automatically run tests relevant to what you're working on. So you don't have to run full suite each time.

worker_person··on Developer's Guide to SaaS Compliance
Then all the good developers leave. A series of decent people hire in, get frustrated and quit. After awhile you just have a core group of either incompetent or desperate people hanging on.

Management can ignore for a few years. Rebooting things isn't too hard. But then the issues that could be ignored can't be anymore. Eventually you get sold for the intellectual property or customer base.

worker_person··on Why We’re Sticking with Ruby on Rails at Gitlab
Initial state is loaded via fixtures or whatever. (slow and expensive)

Transaction is started. Run Test 1 Transaction rolled back. (quick)

Test 2 can be run without the expensive fixtures.

Repeat for all tests.

worker_person··on Why We’re Sticking with Ruby on Rails at Gitlab
http://underpop.online.fr/r/ruby/rails/tutorial/ruby-on-rail...

Use transactional fixtures as much as possible. Minimal db usage between tests.

worker_person··on Why We’re Sticking with Ruby on Rails at Gitlab
When you hit scale. Rails is not the concern. It's the datastore.

All of the major performance problems at scale I've dealt with came down to a super giant table that keeps getting locked.

worker_person··on U.S. inflation reached a new four-decade high of 8.6% in May
High gas prices is a "GOAL" of Democrats. They see it as a way to get US off fossil fuel.
worker_person··on U.S. inflation reached a new four-decade high of 8.6% in May
Guessing you get all your GOP news from democrat news sources.

Listen to Ben Shapiro or other view points for awhile to a better perspective. He has been screaming about inflation for awhile now. Really go out on on a limb and read up on Thomas Sowell.

worker_person··on Why software engineers like woodworking
Maybe that is why people love ruby so much. You can force something to git quite easily.

That was how stagflation was ended. Its probably what is needed this time around.

I had a paper with my key from http://kali.net/ for a couple of decades 1995 or so. Eventually lost the paper in a move.

worker_person··on California Sends Democrats and the Nation a Message on Crime
100% false.

If there are no consequences, then a percentage of the population will go nuts.

I've had a few young kids ask about going to California to get toys since you don't have to pay for them there. In their mind it's a great deal. Explaining that it's wrong even though you get away with it is awkward.

worker_person··on California Sends Democrats and the Nation a Message on Crime
The evidence was stolen. Person filing the complaint was mugged. Mugger was hailed as a hero.

worker_person··on Uber loses appeal as top Swiss court rules company is an employer
I had excellent disability insurance. They lied to me until various deadlines passed. Refused to return my calls etc.

Lesson learned, get a lawyer at the start.

worker_person··on Black Conservative Programmer
You make lot of false assumptions Social conservative believe poor should have opportunities and self determination.

Work hard, plan smart. Make money. Keep your own money and build wealth. High taxes and regulation stop that.

Welfare creates dependence on government and destroys morale. Why work hard if you get free money? Oh you decided to get a job to earn a bit. Let's cut off all your welfare so you're stuck forever.

Guns are two fold. * Do you have the right to defend yourself? * Keeping government from getting too out of control.

China is locking people into buildings, letting them starve to death. Anyone that disagrees is silenced or disappeared. They have death camps where they are committing genocide and using them for cheap organ harvesting. If those people had a 2nd amendment then much of that nonsense wouldn't be possible.

49 senators just voted to allow a 9 month old baby thats half way out to be killed. Anyone that supports this or votes for someone that does is just plain evil.

worker_person··on Black Conservative Programmer
I've found HN to be a mixed bag. Mostly liberal, but not always. Biggest thing is to keep your argument well written and reasoned.

Unlike reddit where people are in a cult mindset. Anything remotely against the grain will get dozens of downvotes in seconds. Outright lies by the left get thousands of upvotes. Want 5,000 points? Just bash Trump in world news.

worker_person··on Black Conservative Programmer
Yep. It's getting really hard. Used to not matter much as people didn't talk politics or religion outside of small groups.

I'm finding more and more that company meetings are open grounds to bash white males. Particularly any straight and / or Christian ones. The people that preach inclusiveness are the most bigoted people I know.

Nothing like having co workers explain to me how reluctant they were to hire me based on race. Only that there were desperate for someone that could actually do the job.

Decades spent trying to treat everyone fair and equal is now out the window and you're called a racist for doing so.
