wordpressdev··on What is this colored fiber in my chicken?
I like both breasts and thighs.
wordpressdev··on Ask HN: Building a side project that makes money. Where to start?
You can start with what you already know and then build over it, or diversify, with time. The easiest way to monetize your knowledge to create a blog and link it up with social media (twitter, FB, youtube etc).

For example, you can write about management and backend data processing (what you do at work). This way, you don't have to learn something new to start your side project (except maybe how to manage a blog). The blog can be monetized via Ad networks like Adsense and Amazon affiliate program etc. As you grow, you may take in direct advertisers, sponsored content etc.

wordpressdev··on Ask HN: What are you working on?
Interesting. If it can be implemented in an apartment, I am game :)
wordpressdev··on Ask HN: What are you working on?
Brushing up Python skills, did a scraping project where data was fetched from semi-structured site and tabulated into Excel worksheet.

Doing keyword research for a niche site project on the side.

wordpressdev··on Why do developers who could work anywhere flock to the most expensive cities?
Most expat workers in Arabian Gulf (GCC) countries live in shared accommodations to cut costs, sometimes 8 people sharing a single room. Life is tough.
wordpressdev··on Amazon Cash
ECommerce is booming in Pakistan and almost all of it is on CoD. For those who have bank accounts, ATM cards usually double as debit cards. For those who are out of banking networks, telecom operators are offering branchless banking to mobile users across Pakistan.
wordpressdev··on Ask HN: Has attracting a blog audience become harder?
Fans of long-form content won't agree, but if you want to be heard, try to engage at Twitter and Facebook. Most of the web readers in this day and age have very little engagement spans, and use diversified channels to consume content. So, in order to attract engaged audience to your blog - you either have to spend lots of efforts of content marketing, or you can simply shift to the medium of popular choice.

When I have to say something long enough to be a blog post, I do a Twitter thread.

wordpressdev··on China is spending billions on soft power
This is how China is penetrating in most of the developing world, be it Africa or Asia. Consider the recent, and on-going, example of the CPEC in Pakistan.
wordpressdev··on Study: Kids whose parents hold them back from school a year have advantages
I used a number of free apps for pre-schoolers available on Google Play Store to teach basic English skills (words, rhymes, counting) and simple maths. Haven't bought anything fancy.
wordpressdev··on Study: Kids whose parents hold them back from school a year have advantages
When I started schooling, parents used to send kids to school at around 4 years. Now, kids see teachers as early as 1 and half years of age. This is ridiculous.

We did an experiment and sent our youngest to school when she was 5 years old. She was home schooled using some apps and books - in her own time and depending on her mood. Now, her teacher says she's one of the brightest in the class, a quick learner filled with creativity.

wordpressdev··on The Gig Economy Celebrates Working To Excess
While I agree to the points made in the article that workers in a gig economy have little rights and less benefits than doing a full time employment, gig economy was never supposed to be exact replacement of a permanent job.

If you live in a Western country, gigs like driving an Uber, doing a task through TaskRabbit or providing service at Fiverr / Upwork can be considered a modern day equivalent of waiting tables or babysitting. Obviously, if you consider the later as full time jobs then you have to burn your a-- to make the ends meet.

For those living in the developing countries, the gig economy is a gift from skies. More and more people from Asia, Africa and parts of Europe are joining the gig economy to supplement their income. Considering the cost of living in these areas, they are even in a position to generate full time living from doing these gigs. Not to mention the digital nomads who are escaping the stressful lives in the US / Europe and traveling to less expensive regions - living off gig economy.

Looking at the positives; gig economy gives you freedom to live your life. You do not have to spend precious hours of the day in commute, waste time in useless meetings, bear office politics and bend over to get a raise. Reduce your expenses, get a few well paying clients, work when you feel like it and enjoy your life.

All hail the Gig Economy ;)

wordpressdev··on Too Many People Are Going to New Zealand
Employers want you to be physically present at the place of job to give you a job offer, country gives work visa only when employer issues an offer letter. Not sure how that'd work?
wordpressdev··on Too Many People Are Going to New Zealand
Any websites / resources where I can find jobs that accept overseas candidates?
wordpressdev··on Too Many People Are Going to New Zealand
By the title "too many people are going to New Zealand", I assumed it was about immigration. NZ seems like a great place to migrate to but the catch is that you need an offer letter from the employer first and there aren't any employers around (at least I am unable to find one) who are gladly hiring overseas candidates.
wordpressdev··on WordStar: A Writer's Word Processor (1996)
WordStar for word processing, Dbase for database management and Lotus-123 for spread sheets - those were the days.
wordpressdev··on Amazon guts affiliate program, cuts fees for electronics in half
There is always a risk associated with grazing in the shadow of an elephant. One day you get your heart's content and other other you may get crushed by the mammoth. In the end of the day, it is better to have your own field - launch own product and use Amazon and the likes as sales channels.
wordpressdev··on Why Founders Fail To Market Their Products
I think the founders that fail to market their products are those who take marketing as something external to product development. Those who consider marketing as introducing and explaining their product features to the world - are successful.
wordpressdev··on Ask HN: Successful one-person online businesses?
Running a gift ideas site monetized through Amazon affiliate program. http://www.giftideasunder50.com
wordpressdev··on Ask HN: If you could live and work somewhere, where would it be?
Dubai is doing a lot in the areas of digital technology, healthcare, solar energy etc. There is a vibrant startup culture and entrepreneurs from other countries are setting up shop in Dubai via the free zones.

By changing ad placements, and adding a more ad units, you can increase your Adsense earnings significantly.

Maintaining a few websites, ranging from a gift ideas website based on (and earning from) Amazon, to some content sites, latest being www.americaundertrump.com
wordpressdev··on Ask HN: Learning to code, without a computer?
My first coding language was GW-BASIC and, as the computer time was limited, I did most of the coding on paper - it was called Dry Run. Used to write up to 200 lines of code on paper, test it on paper and then type in the computer when I get into the lab.
