wordpressdev··on A journey along the abandoned Karachi Circular Railway
I was to Mumbai few years back, traveled a lot in trains both local and to other cities. I must say I was really impressed with the service and management. I was told that trains are the lifeline in Mumbai and people come out to protest if trains get delayed or are closed for maintenance.

We used to have similar system here in Karachi but greed and corruption took it away from us.

wordpressdev··on A journey along the abandoned Karachi Circular Railway
I live in Karachi and I have seen how the Circular Railway was dragged to a rusty death. The land grabbers, the transport mafia and corrupt officials all played their part in the tragic demise of Karachi Circular Railway.
wordpressdev··on Mailtrain.org, self-hosted open-source newsletter app like Mailchimp
Thanks for the insights. I would like to have hiccup free delivery because sending emails isn't my main job and I would prefer it to be as automatic as possible.

Do you have other recommendations besides Sendy?

wordpressdev··on Mailtrain.org, self-hosted open-source newsletter app like Mailchimp
Hi, I am planning to move away from existing provider due to the cost factor and planning to set up own mail delivery system. I reviewed Sendy but haven't made the transition yet. I am looking to host about 30K subscribers who'll receive emails every 10-15 times a month.

Your thoughts?

wordpressdev··on My experience with off-shoring teams and what went wrong
Building remote teams is tough, agreed. But it can be achieved. Off-shore does not / should not mean cheap labor in some obscure part of the world. There are plenty of examples of companies thriving with remote teams, such as:

Buffer: https://buffer.com/about Automattic (parent of WordPress): https://automattic.com/about/

By the way, I am in Pakistan, not India :)

wordpressdev··on My experience with off-shoring teams and what went wrong
I work as offshore / remote consultant with entrepreneurs and small-medium sized companies in the US. Some of these clients are working with me since 5-6 years.
wordpressdev··on It's time to head back to RSS?
Most of the information I consume is through RSS. I use Feedly for that.
wordpressdev··on Publish on Your Own Site, Syndicate Elsewhere
I use Hootsuite to "announce" content, published on sites that I manage, to Twitter and FB.

I also use RSS to "syndicate" content from Site A to x sites in the network.

wordpressdev··on Atom 1.25
I took Atom for a ride, found it slower than VS Code. Not converting for the time being.
wordpressdev··on Do neural networks dream of electric sheep?
Reminds me of Philip K. Dick's book Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? made into the cult movie Blade Runner.
wordpressdev··on How to Work Out What to Charge Clients
I like the notion of charging my clients more but obviously the clients are from this world and they know the market rate. I need to be exceptional to charge 4x and get away with it. That, or the client has some pretty free money to burn.
wordpressdev··on Ask HN: What did you work on in 2017?
I seriously started pursuing Python, did number of freelance projects and managed to write a few blog posts at http://www.kashifaziz.me

2018 will be the year of Python for me.

wordpressdev··on How I Find Consulting Clients
I have started to give consulting a serious go since 2nd quarter of this year as income from my own products are drying up. So far, I have tried following venues to attract potential clients:

- UpWork (sending at least 20 proposals per month) - Social Media (LinkedIn, Reddit, Facebook & Twitter) - Blog

So far getting major work from UpWork with one client from Reddit and FB each. Blog gets views but no conversions yet.

wordpressdev··on Why you're having trouble hiring developers
One of the reasons I stay away from full time jobs and prefer to freelance where "client" is more interested in my skills to do the job than testing, interviewing and evaluating me based on some weird criterion.
wordpressdev··on As crime dries up, Japan’s police hunt for things to do
Do these stats cover the Yakuza?
wordpressdev··on Storify End-of-Life
Storify was a good product, used it in the early days. Shame to see it going down.
wordpressdev··on Using a logbook to improve your programming
I keep a simple text file to log features and bugs. This approach of creating date-based files seems cool. May try it out as well.
wordpressdev··on Our Odd Startup: 3½ Guys, No VC, Profitability, and Patience
Being a solopreneur, I am a one man startup.
wordpressdev··on Ask HN: How Wordpress can help startups/MVPs?
I started http://www.apnijobs.pk on WordPress just to validate the idea and later move to custom code. 14 years down the line, it is still on WP :)
wordpressdev··on Why Do We Still Commute?
After working from home for 10 years, I am now seriously looking for opportunities where I can commute to work. Have to get out of the comfort zone.
wordpressdev··on Ask HN: Who wants to be hired? (November 2017)
I am a "Full Stack" Niche Website Developer. I build end-to-end websites covering keyword research, niche profitability analysis, site design, content production, social marketing setup, ad network integration and SEO.

Most of these sites run on auto-pilot. Once you have some content into them, you can let them rest and make passive income for you.

I am also into SEO and have started doing web scraping and scripting in Python. Wrote a tutorial about it at http://www.kashifaziz.me/web-scraping-python-beautifulsoup.h...

Location: Karachi, Pakistan

  Remote: OK

  Willing to relocate: Yes

  Technologies: WordPress (PHP), Python

  Résumé/CV: http://www.kashifaziz.me

wordpressdev··on CFWheels 2.0 – ColdFusion Markup Language framework inspired by Rails
I did few projects in CF when it was the thing (before being acquired by Adobe etc). Here's one project I did back in 2001-2. It was my country's first jobsite for tech professionals. I was the web dev.

wordpressdev··on Twitter Bots Use Likes, RTs for Intimidation
I made my Twitter account in 2007. Those were the days. Now, the platform is the mostly used for propaganda, perception building, marketing and hate mongering.

Also, there are no friends or foes on Twitter, only interests.

wordpressdev··on Ask HN: Experiences going part time?
I went off the grid of 9-5 over a decade back. Now, I divide my time between freelance gigs and personal projects (mostly niche websites).
wordpressdev··on Docker operations slowing down on AWS
Being part of a project that utilized 5 dedicated severs at some point in time, I hear you.
wordpressdev··on Ask HN: What tasks do you automate?
Incredible. This is something I was looking / planning for a long time now. I have a bunch of ideas (couple of spiral notebooks full of 'em) which need set up and execution but due to my consulting practice, I haven't initiated anything as yet.

If you ever write a blog post on the process / checklist of "automating your startup", do share it here.

wordpressdev··on Ask HN: As a skilled developer, how do you make pocket money with little time?
Thanks for providing this insight. Seems like you're wearing too many hats at a time. More power to you :)
wordpressdev··on Ask HN: What are some examples of successful single-person businesses?
Thanks.
wordpressdev··on Ask HN: What are some examples of successful single-person businesses?
