woodhull··on Thin Servers with Smart Pipes: Designing SoC Accelerators for Memcached (2013)
This sort of cloud scale thinking about power usage/performance is how we'll clean up the environmental record of the data center industry.

Think about how this sort of thing when applied to AWS ElastiCache would reduce the coal fueled electricity footprint of the thousands of startups that use that service.

woodhull··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (November 2014)
ControlShift Labs - Remote Team (Global). Ruby/Rails or DevOps - Freelance Contractor or Full Time. http://www.controlshiftlabs.com/

What we do:

We build a set of software tools that online advocacy organizations use to scale their work and make it more participatory. We're excited about supporting a shift in how advocacy organizations are using the internet to organize -- and building tools that empower ordinary activists in extraordinary ways.

We're a small team of software engineers and online organizers with several decades of combined experience in the advocacy sector, including at Organizing for America, ActBlue, CREDO, MoveOn.org, and Purpose. Our deep organizing and technology background, coupled with a close interest in our partners’ campaigns and goals, lets us develop tools that are particularly effective in facilitating effective grassroots organizing and building strong and participatory organizations. We have a deep commitment to progressive social change around the world that infuses our work.

We're profitable.

Tech:

We're pragmatic about the technologies we use in our work but at the moment our stack includes ruby, rails, rspec, postgres, redis, sass and haml. We practice test driven development, hold daily team stand-ups via Google Hangout, and use an agile inspired process.

At the moment we're looking for help with two roles:

- A dev ops contractor to help us fully automate our infrastructure using chef / aws / cloudformation / packer / vagrant / etc.

- Contract or full-time Ruby/Rails developers to help us with product feature development.

We offer the opportunity to do work that matters (with amazing social change organizations) with a flexible work environment and fair market compensation.

You must be comfortable working remotely (we meet up 2-3 times a year) and communicating in written and verbal English.

Emails us at talk@controlshiftlabs.com with your CV, a github profile and a pointer to some code that you've written that you are particularly proud of, and why you'd like to work with us.

Thanks!

Nathan

woodhull··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (May 2014)
ControlShift Labs: http://www.controlshiftlabs.com/ (NYC or remote)

We're a strong technical team building software products to help non-profits engage their members participate in their missions in meaningful ways on and offline. Our first product is an online organizing platform that is used by many of the world's most effective advocacy orgs including Greenpeace, 350.org, and CREDO. We're profitable.

We're about to launch a second product that we think will help large non-profits raise significantly more money than they do now.

We've got customers all over the world and a distributed remote team that we'd like you to be a part of. We're looking for people who care about our customer's causes and writing excellent software.

We build tools with rails, postgres, redis, rspec, etc.

Send a note to talk@controlshiftlabs.com with your Github profile and why you'd like to work with us.

woodhull··on A Rally Against Mass Surveillance in Washington, DC
Found a reference, in this WSJ editorial: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000142412788732382300457859...

and Daily Caller piece: http://dailycaller.com/2013/06/26/consumer-financial-protect...

To be fair the CFPB claims the data is anonymized, even though there are account level rows in the datasets they are pulling in from the credit card companies they regulate.

woodhull··on A Rally Against Mass Surveillance in Washington, DC
Can you post a citation here?

Googling, all I can find are references to a database of consumer complaints that people have proactively made to the agency about Credit Card companies being abusive.

That work seems like good digital government at it's best to me -- helping aggregate and track down fraudulent and abusive companies before they hurt more people through voluntarily submitted complaints from consumers.

That db is here: http://www.consumerfinance.gov/complaintdatabase/

They even have a REST API and visualizations.

term limits do not address the problem of money in politics.

They just create a bigger incentive for a revolving door between industry and legislative office.

It's actually really easy to fix with publicly funded elections, or other campaign finance reform.
woodhull··on White House Owes Response To Petition To Fire Prosecutor Of Aaron Swartz
Actually, the petition site is a clever way to harvest email addresses which the administration can then use to market it's policies back to constituents.
woodhull··on Meet Watsi, Y Combinator's First Nonprofit
I'm pretty sure that GiveWell (whom I adore) wouldn't like Watsi very much.

It doesn't maximize the utility of donations to spend lots of money saving the lives of a handful of people vs. other interventions that can save the lives of many more people suffering from diseases like malaria at a much lower cost per patient than the interventions that Watsi is promoting.

I think Watsi donors will feel good about helping specific people, but I'm personally interested in my donations actually being maximally impactful. If you want to save the most lives per dollar, the sort of extraordinary treatments that Watsi funds are not a great way to do it.

Orca and systems like it are also not particularly relevant to electoral outcomes, compared to all of the other things that campaigns use/build.

woodhull··on Do You Really Want to be Doing this When You're 50?
Any American citizen can move to Hawaii anytime they like. It's not terribly hard to do, especially with a high demand skill that lets you find work anywhere, globally, like being a software engineer.
woodhull··on Meteor meets NoGPL
That's kind of a silly view. You would rather spend 6 months "writing code" than spend 1 day negotiating a contract that would save you 6 months of effort?

What if sending them an email that took as long to write as this HN post would get you a quote?

Psychology of product purchasers is fascinating.

SMS.
woodhull··on This technology is saving lives in Africa
I think that Facebook beat you to this - I believe they are the top ranked site in terms of traffic for much of the continent. They have a nicely done mobile web version.

In addition, they've partnered with carriers to make http://0.facebook.com free from data charges across much of the continent, which solves the access problem. Zero is their even more lightweight version of http://m.facebook.com/

woodhull··on Don't use MongoDB
I couldn't agree more with this analysis, with the added addition that the single threaded nature of the JS interpreter can also cause really bad & unexpected performance things to happen.

Most of the people who are excited about mongo, have never used it in a high volume environment, or with a large dataset. We used it for a medium sized app at my last employer, with paid support from 10gen, and everyone on the project walked away wishing we had stayed with a more mature data store.

Of course things work well when traffic is low, everything fits in memory, and there are no shards.

It seems unlikely that rack-cache + memcached would actually offer similar performance to varnish. This seems like a pretty bad set of changes for apps that need to serve out lots of static content - think newspapers, blogs, etc.

Will the old configuration style for http caching continue to be supported indefinitely?
