wood_spirit··on Buffett to step down following six-decade run atop Berkshire
> I don't know how men like Peter Navarro got so far.

It’s a weird story. IIRC in the run for president before trumps first term he sent Jared Kushner to find out about trade. Kushner browsed Amazon, looking at book covers, and picked Navarro’s book because he liked the title… and the rest is history

wood_spirit··on How LWN is faring in 2025
People all around me seem to be cutting back on discretionary spending. These aren’t lwn subscribers, just normal people leading average lives, but I extrapolate that lwn subscribers are in the same boat.
wood_spirit··on Strings Just Got Faster
The over engineering creeps in anywhere there is collaboration. It’s not a Java thing, it’s a corporate thing. The new teammate who refactors the perfectly working sql pipeline; the teammate who makes story points a required field on your trouble ticket system, the teammate who just saw a conference talk on rust and wants to apply it etc. Most engineers are not zen masters seeking out simplicity; they are lost with poor grasp of desired business outcomes so they procrastinate by adding complexity and indirection and focusing on tech as if it were the destination not the journey.
wood_spirit··on Minimum Viable Blog
I currently have a very similar setup. And tbh I’m keen to move to a less involved solution…

Are there anything like ghpages with a built in wysiwyg editor?

wood_spirit··on Young people aren't as happy as they used to be [Global Flourishing Study]
Globalisation is about comparative advantage.

Some of America’s comparative advantages that we see a lot of on HN has been designing chips, online services and financial services etc. Also the defence industrial complex. There are probably more.

In general todays Americans don’t want to work in factories any more, and factory owners don’t want workers these days either: they want robots. Witness all Musk has said about workers being temporary while he gets robots at Tesla since the start etc.

wood_spirit··on Mark Zuckerberg Says Social Media Is Over
How much is the algorithm swayed by the behaviour of stealth bots trying to act human in order to gain the cred to be a more effective bot?
wood_spirit··on How I blog with Obsidian, Hugo, GitHub, and Cloudflare
I set up a friend’s prolific blog with a very similar approach many years ago using pelican and pushing to a git server vps where a tiny custom python wevserver serves whatever is in git.

Only friend has struggled to get pelican and git etc set up on a new laptop. And tbh I am lost - and horrified - at the latest windows. Not keen on being tech support and working out why python command hangs etc.

And my custom vps setup doesn’t do tls. And I don’t want to try.

So I’m wondering if there are any alternatives? Is there a web frontend for blogging straight to ghpages, for example?

wood_spirit··on Trump exempts phones, computers, chips from 'reciprocal' tariffs
So is china also giving an exemption?
wood_spirit··on Why Your 'Harmonious' Team Is Failing
How do people cope in teams where some or even most members are vocal but actually always completely wrong and you’re the only one seeing it?
wood_spirit··on What If We Made Advertising Illegal?
I remember fondly the early internet which was full of hobby sites and forums and niche link rings. This was an innocent better time where the internet was full of small scale creativity and sharing and mostly kindness.
wood_spirit··on DeepSeek: Inference-Time Scaling for Generalist Reward Modeling
When OpenAI surged ahead Meta ended up giving away its incredibly expensive to make llama model to reduce the OpenAI valuations.

Is DeepSeeks openness in part to reduce the big American tech companies?

wood_spirit··on Manjaro Linux: Making Arch Linux More Accessible
In the past I used to use Debian then Ubuntu but left back when Ubuntu became too opinionated on the UI etc. Just wasn’t fun to tinker with anymore.

So I haven’t been following too closely for the last few years. But then this morning I was just pondering which distro to use to breath new life into an old mbp 2014 and googled it and discovered Manjaro. That was just before seeing this on HN!

But comments here about telemetry…

What is the go to distro for no hassles no nonsense no commercial angle desktop Linux these days?

wood_spirit··on U.S. national-security leaders included me in a group chat
That counts as a friendly country these days =(
wood_spirit··on U.S. national-security leaders included me in a group chat
I’m not seeing the parallels.

Trump went on about Hillary’s mail and made it a big thing for political points, not because he was particularly caring or didn’t have infamously bad opsec when he got in.

You lead dev trusted himself more than the team. He was probably right.

wood_spirit··on Tesla Hate Is Making Insurance More Expensive for Owners
Musk has just appealed the rescinding of his $56B pay deal. Where would Tesla be were he to get a more favourable ruling this time?
wood_spirit··on Tesla Hate Is Making Insurance More Expensive for Owners
Trump did literally say during that event that attacking Tesla showrooms was domestic terrorism.
wood_spirit··on Tesla Hate Is Making Insurance More Expensive for Owners
Should/would the government bail out Tesla were it to get into financial difficulties?
wood_spirit··on US Ends Support For Ukrainian F-16s
A plane without up to date countermeasures is not fit for purpose. They will be ineffective or even unusable in weeks.
wood_spirit··on Rust vs. Go: Battle for the Back End

Would Sweden want to pay for France’s nukes when the next president of France is very likely far right?
wood_spirit··on Mission Accomplished? Heat pump adoption has a long way to go
In Scandinavia heat pumps are often replacing wood burners in existing houses. Source: I live there
wood_spirit··on Tariffs result in 10% laptop price hike in U.S. says Acer CEO
Top 10% richest people own 85% https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Distribution_of_wealth

The richest people are not paying the “income tax” your link refers to. They often have trusts and things and do daily expenses from loans and other tricks.

Bezos and Musk, for example, paid $0 income tax https://americansfortaxfairness.org/wp-content/uploads/ProPu...

wood_spirit··on Plane crashes, overturns during landing at Toronto airport
Footage existing and footage being released to the public are two different things.

I understand there is a public Voyeur interest in seeing crashes, but how does releasing footage of accidents aid investigation or safety outcomes?

wood_spirit··on Mission Accomplished? Heat pump adoption has a long way to go
I had a large house that was heated by electric and wood and replaced them with a ground source heat pump with a loop zigzagging under my lawn. Relatively expensive to install but paid for itself in 5 years.

YMMV. Good luck, hope it works out for you too :)

wood_spirit··on Mission Accomplished? Heat pump adoption has a long way to go
You are making this up as you go :)

Yes they are often installed in bores into bedrock.

All those pesky Scandinavians must be doing it because it makes economic sense.

Step back and think that if you don’t know the details then all the excuses you can imagine are probably misleading or wrong.

wood_spirit··on Mission Accomplished? Heat pump adoption has a long way to go
Heat pumps are used extensively in Scandinavia, including up in the polar circle. These are usually ground source heat pumps, which is the essentially the same pump technology but connected to an in-ground loop instead of taking heat from outside air.

Nowadays the air con uses the same heat pump to extract heat from the house and pump it into the ground, which not only chills the house but also helps a little recharging the ground source.

wood_spirit··on Bzip3: A spiritual successor to BZip2

wood_spirit··on On DeepSeek and Export Controls
It seems unlikely the US will take military action to protect an ally.

It seems even more unlikely that, should the US be prepared to bomb land targets in China, that they would do anything beyond overt military targets that are being used to attack Taiwan.

When trump has recently been asked what he’ll do when China attacks Taiwan he has just said sanctions and tariffs.
