Because most weapons programs are also jobs programs. The money spend on Stinger will stay in the USA.
woobar··on To make more stingers, U.S. needs to revive production technology from scratch
Quick googling says that Piorun is heavier, slower, smaller payload, and smaller operational range. But even if it is better, can Poland ramp up production to meet the demand?
woobar··on Google has a secret browser hidden inside the settings
This is a recent one. Whatsapp bug [1] exposed both Android and iOS few years back. And then there was MMS exploit [2] that affected close to 95% of android phones

Are you sure about biggest Android exploit?

Tests conducted by Project Zero confirm that those four vulnerabilities allow an attacker to remotely compromise a phone at the baseband level with no user interaction, and require only that the attacker know the victim's phone number. [1]

woobar··on How the most popular cars in the US track drivers
It is now standard (at least in the US) because it was mandated by law (in 2007). USDOT took some sweet time to implement it, but it was required by 2018.
woobar··on LCD TVs won’t see any further development
When I was choosing a new TV I was a bit concerned about brightness. 2000 nits is so much better (on paper) than 400 nits. But I wasn't planning on putting my TV outdoors and got a C2.

My current brightness settings are at 30% when watching TV at night. "Bright room" settings bumps pixel brightness to 45%, which is good enough for a room with windows on 3 out of 4 walls. It is much brighter then a 10 year old LCD it replaced. And I had no problem using that old one until I put two screens side by side.

woobar··on The unsung hero of the Apple Watch is its hidden buttons
I had few Amazon SS bands, and they all were leaving dark marks. Apple's Silver Milanese Loop is stain free. Also price difference is not that bad compared to knockoffs.
woobar··on The unsung hero of the Apple Watch is its hidden buttons
Yeah, I've meant "stainless steel" when I mentioned dirty wrists.
woobar··on The unsung hero of the Apple Watch is its hidden buttons
I would agree that third-party knockoffs of plastic or textile straps are great. The metal ones are just not worth it. Unless you like dirty wrists and peeling paint, I'd avoid them. just look at the reviews for the one you've posted [1]

woobar··on Federal judge: Border searches of cell phones require a warrant
They have linked your face to the photo in your passport/green card. By looking into the camera you agreed for them to perform the lookup of your ID. It is probably more secure than looking at a physical ID that could be fake.
woobar··on Graphs That Explain Software Engineering Salaries in 2023
I am not sure you have read what I said. Already public companies were giving away stock options as far as 15-20 years ago. 100% of them had successful exit.
woobar··on Graphs That Explain Software Engineering Salaries in 2023
Quite different from your previous point (i.e. that they are worthless)? Don't think so. They are a good addition to the salary plus bonus. Now these old companies switched to RSUs.
woobar··on Graphs That Explain Software Engineering Salaries in 2023
Stock options are not limited to private companies. Public companies do stock options too. The only difference from RSUs is if stock goes below your strike price they are worthless at vesting. You still can wait it out.

Everyone at my dinosaur financial company was getting them 15 years ago. Not a life changing amounts at my level though.

GP was talking about companies with FAANG levels of profitability. Maybe we should bring up Spotify when they are profitable. [1]

woobar··on Europe data salary benchmark 2023
I am not sure what are you trying to say. Your link says people in need are getting energy subsidies and direct payments. Do you believe that the number of people skipping meals will be lower without the safety net?
woobar··on Europe data salary benchmark 2023
You are comparing outliners (big tech with huge salaries and outstanding benefits) with every employer in Western(?) Europe. How much does it cost to provide 6 weeks of vacation to everyone in the country? The senior engineer in Europe will have to support more people through taxes.

The market rates are lower because there is no market. FTA I only recognize one European company with somewhat global reach (booking.com). Europe doesn't have multiple companies trying risky businesses and competing for the top talent. European values (focus on equality, stability, WLB, etc) are in part responsible for this.

woobar··on Europe data salary benchmark 2023
You can't have your cake and eat it too. You like your social safety net? You like stronger worker protection? Long vacations? Someone has to pay for all of it. Either through higher taxes or lower wages.
woobar··on US Air Force shoots down drone swarm with THOR microwave weapon
I think the parent just tried to demonstrate what the "arm race" really mean. I.e. they just countered your hypothetical with another one.

As for the the Russians, they clearly shown that spending tons of munitions to make holes in the open fields is not really efficient. [1] Ukrainians on the other hand are pretty successful in counter-battery fire using US (sic!) systems. See HIMARS, for instance.

woobar··on Americans have never been so unwilling to relocate for a new job
When you are retired you don't need to live at the same place. World is your oyster. The capital gains from your house ($1.2M already, more in 10 years) will allow you to pick new house almost anywhere without worrying about mortgagees. You won't care about schools or extra bedrooms for kids, for instance.

Statistically very few people stay at the same house for 30+ years, most move within eight.

woobar··on Americans have never been so unwilling to relocate for a new job
I will not argue about someone's ability to buy a new house in the current environment. But in this thread discussion is focused on existing homeowners moving to a new house.

In your case (assuming $300K original house price) you will sell it for $600K, net $264K profits after commissions. Use profits plus $60K of original downpayment and any additional equity in the old house as a downpayment for a similar house at $600K. The new mortgage will be similar to one you had in 2007. Same rate and most likely smaller principal. Not a big difference.

woobar··on Americans have never been so unwilling to relocate for a new job
My point was that paying 6.5% on a $300K mortgage was a normal thing just 15 years ago. In fact it did not stop anyone from buying in the run to the great recession (aka "subprime mortgage crisis").

I don't have mortgage now, so no, I am not leaving money on the table.

woobar··on Americans have never been so unwilling to relocate for a new job
Wait a second. They were able to pay that mortgage before they refinanced, right? And the rates 5 years ago were close to 5% (according to your chart). Suddenly rate get close to what was normal just five years ago and we are talking about most people not able to move.
woobar··on Americans have never been so unwilling to relocate for a new job
Why are you comparing to the absolute minimum? Didn't people use to have mortgages before 2020? My first house was close to $300K, mortgage was 6.5%. No one was crying about this back then.
woobar··on FBI agents accuse CIA of 9/11 coverup
This sounds way less evil than the parent implied.

If I say "I cannot just go and buy a brand new car. Unless my current one is totaled", and a few months later I am t-boned by a truck at the intersection. Did the driver of the truck played into my agenda?

woobar··on Lessons from America’s astonishing economic record
Once we start talking about "a lot less" the options to not work become scarce.

For instance, my estimate is that with the minimum number of millions ($2M) one can support a family while unemployed in the USA and pretty much the rest of the world. With 4% SWR such family will have $80K per year, which is more than the median household income. They will pay little taxes and will qualify for a subsidized ACA health plan.

If you are talking about less than a million, you won't be able to support a family in US. It is possible in a 3rd world countries, but it is not always an option for a lot of people.
