wonderyak··on Dollar Shave Club Lands $12 Million to Dramatically Expand Product Portfolio
FWIW - You can get safety razors from DSC's supplier - http://www.dorcousa.com/

I was looking at DSC for a long time and ended up trying Harry's. Was very disappointed with Harry's blades. Next time I order anything it will be from Dorco.

wonderyak··on Nexus 5 to be first smartphone with MEMS camera
The updates to Android in 4.1+ have made the GNex slower and less able to function as a proper device.

I've rooted and installed a few different ROMs, but there is never a fix for crap hardware and limited RAM. The NAND seems to be a real source of problems as well.

wonderyak··on Nexus 5 to be first smartphone with MEMS camera
I was very excited about phones until my experience with the GNex. I was hoping VZW and Moto would be able to push out a decent Droid(w / QWERTY slider) but I don't think that is going to happen. There is nothing on the market today that I want to use.

I've even come close to getting an iPhone a couple times; even though I know it doesn't suit my life or workflow very well. I just want my phone to be useable!

wonderyak··on Nexus 5 to be first smartphone with MEMS camera
As someone in the same position that has debated this endlessly in their own head -- its not going to be really 'worth' it. VZW has the best network around, being grandfathered in on unlimited data is a serious boon.

When my internet service goes out in my home -- WiFi hotspot and no worries about whether I'm going to be throttled or hit an overage.

I hate my GNex but VZW+Unlimited Data is worth more to me. Whatever new phone you get will be just as obsolete in two years as the GNex is now.

wonderyak··on Responsive Design is Not About Screen Sizes Any More
It's "bad" because its very difficult to plan for all of the extreme edge cases found on the net. If UA Sniffing was infalliable, there would be a lot more of it.
wonderyak··on [dead]
Really? A Daily Mail story for which the source is Infowars?
wonderyak··on Don't reinvent the scrollbar
Even worse is trying to click on a file or folder that is last in the window in 'file list' view. You have to wait for the horizontal scrollbar to disappear in order to interact with the last item.

Very frustrating.

wonderyak··on Groklaw legal site shuts over fears of NSA email snooping
It worked for Hoover and Nixon. We're on a continuum here. Its not like all of the sudden the government decided to start spying on its citizens.
wonderyak··on Kids can't use computers, and why it should worry you
And thats where it falls apart.

If he were more honest with himself he'd say something like 'I know I can go online or pick up a manual and figure anything about my car that I'd want to.'

Letting it remain a mystery is just perpetuating the ignorance people seem to cling to like a life raft.

Figuring things out is fun and you learn new skills.

wonderyak··on Email service used by Snowden shuts down, warns against using US-based companies
Part of the problem is the FISA Court. The court has the power to interpret the constitution, holds secret hearings, the rulings are secret and only government lawyers are allowed.

You can now break the law without even knowing it.

wonderyak··on Email service used by Snowden shuts down, warns against using US-based companies
Many of us are calling for changes, many people thought electing Obama would facilitate this change. I think these people are the most upset of all; the man ran on a campaign of change ...

There is a general concensus among people across the political parties that things are broken. Congress is not good, the President is not doing a good job and problems are mounting.

The majority realizes that the system is broken (ish), things are bad, the government should be doing something about it instead of prolonging the status quo -- and yet we can't get any meaningful change going.

I just don't understand it.

wonderyak··on Android AOSP maintainer quits
So we can now lump all Qualcomm devices along with Verizon (CDMA) devices into the 'may never be properly updated' pile.

You'd think that Google would have the foresight to listen to the maintainer of the project; perhaps they did and this is just the way it is now?

wonderyak··on 57% Fear Government Will Use NSA Data to Harass Political Opponents
The other problem -- despite the changing of the guard in the Executive branch -- other branches and workers stay the same.
wonderyak··on Goodbye to Painful Image Loads on Small Devices
Unfortunately the browser vendors get to make this up as they go along and they seem unwilling to take into consideration the many developers which are more in favor of the <picture> element because its so much easier to write.

Naturally, if/whenever it is implemented we'll all scuttle back to our keyboards and play with srcset .

wonderyak··on Goodbye to Painful Image Loads on Small Devices
I just heard about this today... the pricing seems a little off kilter unless I'm understanding it incorrectly. How prohibitively expensive would this be for a SMB to implement?

The tech behind the service sounds fantastic, I'd love to be able to use them.

wonderyak··on Goodbye to Painful Image Loads on Small Devices
I also am a huge fan of Zurb and Foundation but I'm not sure why this implementation is any better than picturefill. I still have to write a whole bunch of stuff I shouldn't have to write.

Markup for an image should not be several lines long.

wonderyak··on I Sold The Magazine, Too
I, for one, am hoping he makes good on his threats to make a podcasting app. This space desperately needs some innovation and a solid bare-bones app to help facilitate the podcasting sector's growth.
wonderyak··on Facebook Home and Dogfooding
Obviously as someone that has never used Google Now, you wouldn't know this... but it acts on search data, not gmail data.

Its a normal app with normal settings (enter stocks you want to follow, enter sports teams, etc..) that takes some cues from what you search for once you've set up Google now.

Why the hell would Google want to display all the OLD data it has on you in an application called 'Now'?

wonderyak··on Facebook Home and Dogfooding
I think the marketing is particularly bad and devoid of messaging because what else are they going to say?

"Download Facebook Home, its an Android home replacement which includes none of the features of the basic Android launchers that you've been using since the day you got your phone. We'll move all of your stuff behind our wall of Facebook so it becomes more difficult to find."

I'm sure in a lot of cases it comes down to this: "Wait, if I install this I'll lose my weather widget? Forget it."

wonderyak··on The Food-Truck Business Stinks
Taco trucks have been a mainstay of Los Angeles foodstuffs for a long time before the current trend of 'gourmet' truck food started. I'm not sure if the mobile/car-centric nature of the city tends to endear us to a mobile food cooking service or what; the 'food truck' craze has been very poopular here.

Since buying/leasing a physical location is such a costly and risky venture, these trucks have been a great way for budding restaurateurs to get their feet in the door; see what works, what doesn't and perhaps eventually open a physical location. People get experience doing something they love and building a business, people get fed with interesting food that would be prohibitively expensive or otherwise difficult to discover (due to culinary fusion or other reasons), and the city gets tax revenue.

Win/Win in my book.

wonderyak··on I feel like Gmail went from being Photoshop to Draw Something
> "There is a tradeoff in HCI that is between ease and efficiency. It seems Gmail is less easy to use AND less efficient. The only improvement seems to be design."

I would argue that the improvement is the arrangement of pixels to be more eye pleasing -- design improvement would be addressing all of those issues outlined. In fact, this is a design failure.

wonderyak··on Facebook buys Parse
A social network they didn't let anyone into; seriously don't understand how you expect to develop a social network/platform with a limited beta test.
wonderyak··on Researchers Finally Replicated Reinhart-Rogoff, and There Are Serious Problems
If households could print currency it would be analogous. The US Federal Government can not ever run out of money because it controls the currency. This is not to say that bad things can't happen (inflation for one); but in most cases its a balance sheet equation - Federal Debt is Private Credit.
wonderyak··on The dire state of WordPress
I had heard there was a Code review for the theme repository, my feeling (pure speculation) is that the review process is there to weed out truly bad coding or malware but there was no strict edicts on style or 'the right way to do things'.

I understand enforcing methods and whatnot is probably not in the best interest of Automattic, WordPress.org nor the community; if it is feasible at all. I'd just like to see some kind of curation based on 'the right way to do things', if anything just so I know when I'm doing things the right way.

The Codex and general documentation has become a bit muddled with new APIs and conflicting philosophies between developers. What used to be WordPress' greatest asset (its documentation) is starting to falter behind a bit. It's been hard for me since ~3.2 to figure out where I should be changing my boilerplates as WP updates.

I follow TRAC, I keep as updated as I can on future changes and point releases but without solid documentation sometimes I feel like I don't know if I'm doing things the way they were intended.

Savvy?

wonderyak··on The PyCon Incident
It used to be called 'being a grown-up'. Somehow being a man-child became not just acceptable, but celebrated.
wonderyak··on The PyCon Incident
People used to conduct themselves with at least a bit of decorum and that affected 'free speech' very little.

Manners, common sense and general pleasantness seem to have been completely forgotton.

wonderyak··on The dire state of WordPress
You don't have to use anyone else's themes. You can create your own; and its almost as easy as making a regular static site.

There is never a need to 'crowbar' anything when you can create the entire look and feel from scratch.

wonderyak··on The dire state of WordPress
Its quite possible there have been some improvements on the back end since I tried it last. I'll have to give it another shake.
wonderyak··on The dire state of WordPress
I liked Concrete5 when I was playing around with it. I was very excited by its potential; especially looking at projects where maybe WP was overkill.

Where the bottom fell out was in two areas:

1. Paid plugins

I cannot rationally tell my clients 'this software might have a few cases where it is easier than WP to use and manage; but you'll be spending several hundred dollars replicating free functionality available on WP'.

Its a non-starter.

2. The software still looks kind of 'hokey' compared to WordPress

WordPress has lots of issues and there are a ton of other great alternatives. But, its like Facebook vs. all other social networks -- you go where the people are because it makes everything better.
