wmblaettler··on DoubleRobotics: Telepresence gets sexy (and made in the USA)
It's does seem rather sci-fi to send a robot in your place or to embody a robot that is at a location where regular people are also located. I can more easily accept the idea of a telepresence robot in an office, but even that is rather uncanny.

It will be interesting to see if this tech really goes mainstream over the coming decades -- I predict it will.

Just an observation: a telepresence robot at a restaurant would not do much good in that the it cannot eat for you. But robotic servers -- that's entirely feasible.

wmblaettler··on Show HN: gridster.js, a drag-and-drop grid plugin that actually works
Does this implement any auto-layout / best fit methods given a random set of tiles?
wmblaettler··on Show HN: gridster.js, a drag-and-drop grid plugin that actually works
Very nice! Any tips/issues on making it responsive to the window size? Having just viewed at the demo and not really digging into the code, I am not sure if this is rather obvious or not. Thanks!
wmblaettler··on Where the Creative Class Earns the Most
It would be nice if the wages were standardized against cost of living. This would show where the wage truly equates to higher compensation.
wmblaettler··on EpicEditor: An Embeddable JavaScript Markdown Editor
http://hallojs.org does this, it was on HN yesterday.
wmblaettler··on Collusion - iPad pen productivity solved
The name Collusion elicits negative connotations and my initial reading of the title led me to think that there was come wrongdoing on Kickstarter's part. I really would reconsider the name of the name of the company / product, unless this is the intended effect.
wmblaettler··on Redditors who are rich (net worth $1 million+) - how did you get rich?
...and then you're dead.
wmblaettler··on TSA: Fail
You are really missing the point. All of this is security theater. It will not catch people who want to exploit weaknesses. The 9/11 hijackers used boxcutters, not much different than a shiv as he describes.

The problem with "outcry" in the US is that it is short lived and most people have short attention spans. Now that the media "furor" has died down, things will progress forward as the powers-that-be wish.

I just flew round trip, BWI-SJO, was directed toward a backscatter machine and opted out. I was treated rather rudely at BWI and had to stand around until a 'male assist' or whatever they called the person that had to pat me down. The whole ordeal made me feel guilty of something when I had done nothing wrong.

I oppose backscatters on multiple fronts. Health, invasion of privacy, corrupt contracts, general ineffectiveness, etc.

wmblaettler··on Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales: MPAA chairman Christopher Dodd should be fired
This quote from Christopher Dodd, heard on NPR the day after the blackout, really irked me: "It sort of reminds me of kids who can't get their way hold their breath and start screaming, instead of engaging with the debate and providing information, encouraging a discussion on how this can be improved. It just seems petulant to me."

I wonder what he thinks of strikes, boycotts and public demonstrations, I guess they are all childish too.

wmblaettler··on How U.S. Lost Out on iPhone Work
"The facility’s central kitchen cooks an average of three tons of pork and 13 tons of rice a day." The massive scale of Foxconn really hit me when I read the amount of food served is measured in TONS per day.
wmblaettler··on Piracy - You can't have your cake and eat it
It appears to be a style of his site. There isn't a single capital letter to be found. It's intentional rather than lazy, although it doesn't make it any less grammatically incorrect.
wmblaettler··on The Pirate Bay's statement on PIPA/SOPA
Honestly, this argument is REALLY weak. Hollywood spends millions of dollars to create these movies. To pirate it and not compensate the companies involved is irresponsible, selfish and ignorant -- it is stealing. There is is great amount of financial investment that goes into creating these movies. Today with the internet, the distribution avenue exists for people to produce and self publish, independent of Hollywood, but there is so much more to creating a successful movie: expensive sets, actors' salaries, special effects, post processing, marketing, the list goes on... In order to be successful these movies require great financial outlay and to expect the final product to be free is ridiculous. If these people really believe in free movies and music, they'd boycott Hollywood productions (they very stuff they call 'trash') and instead trade independent creations where the artist or writer chooses to give it away.

This argument is not about freedom of exchanging original ideas or even sharing bits of "copyrighted" information, it's about the wholesale stealing of movies which took a great deal of time money and effort to create, even if they are considered 'trash'. In the end, TPB and it's users only pander to the "culture" that they supposedly so despise by consuming such media, they just don't like paying for it.

The "great game" referenced (Civilization, at least the most recent version: 5), is ironically available to download on The Pirate Bay. I suppose this is not worth paying Sid Meier and the development studios he worked with to create this game either.

Pretty much the only thing I don't disagree with are the buried statements about Fox News and the media's control over the public opinion and the inhumane conditions in foreign factories.

FWIW, I OPPOSE SOPA and PIPA, I called my congressmen and voiced my concern today, the proposed law is useless to curb this behavior, but will instead hurt those who DO want to freely exchange ideas and information.

wmblaettler··on Instant CSS, JS, HTML or DOM documentation
If I am not mistaken the main problem with a frameset would be that the URL in the address bar will never change and therefore you cannot link directly to a page within the frame, i.e. where a user wants to copy the URL and share with a colleague.
wmblaettler··on Help yourself stop rewriting HTML
It's a start, could definitely use more options
wmblaettler··on Nest - The Learning Thermostat
Interesting. Their pre-order system went down from heavy traffic this afternoon, and now I see a redirect to Best Buy for pre-orders. I wonder if a quick deal was struck between Nest and Best Buy to get the pre-orders back online quickly.
wmblaettler··on iPod godfather and ex-iPhone team launch previously stealth startup
During the summer we've been, year by year, increasing our temperature by a degree to save on air conditioning costs, this past summer our thermostat was at 79/80 degrees.

At which step does the restaurant, dance club, or sports stadium become profitable? I guarantee it's not step 1 or probably even step 2.
wmblaettler··on Verbling: The instant way to practice and learn a language
This is great! I would love to see school districts be able to sign up entire classes and be matched with foreign classes. This feature would be a potential source of revenue. Free for anyone to use, but added features for paying schools: class matching system, teacher moderation, statistics, etc.
wmblaettler··on Show HN: My user-friendly outbound firewall for Mac
I wonder if the currency conversion logic is mixed up. Google returns: 1 US dollar = 0.9839 Canadian dollars. I wonder if it's dividing by .9839 instead of multiplying by it, which does get you close to 9.16.
wmblaettler··on Free Printed Copies of "Version Control by Example"
Unfortunately the same thing is happening for me.
wmblaettler··on Show HN: My weekend project, Startup Tees
I have to agree, the thing that struck me first was the poor photography (washed out, hazy photos) and second, the ill-fitting shirts -- too large and baggy on most models.

EDIT: Having read your story, Go Penn State! Good luck to you.

wmblaettler··on Show HN: New platform for finding work - $2000 project minimum
I found a small typo in the "Why We Are Doing This?" paragraph, "and have respect for the work we have [to] do."

wmblaettler··on Impossible for the HN crowd: Do nothing for 2 minutes
FYI, if I open the page in Chrome with cursor outside of the screen it counts down to 0, if my mouse is within the screen, it says Fail at about 1:57 continuously.
wmblaettler··on Impossible for the HN crowd: Do nothing for 2 minutes
Mine does the same (Chrome+WinXP). Makes it incredibly hard to sit through when it's yelling Fail at me every time the counter gets to 1:57 regardless of me not actually doing anything. I only think I could sit through about 30 seconds of it flashing Fail until I left (tempted to debug, but too busy with work). I also briefly wondered if that was the test -- to sit through the buggy countdown clock without trying to troubleshoot why it's broken, if that's the test, I failed.

wmblaettler··on A JavaScript IDE for the iPhone
I tried it on my iPod Touch, OS version 3.1.2 and could not get the keyboard to come up or see any code from the samples appear in the textarea. Seems pretty cool in the iPhone Simulator though.
