wltprgm··on Learning from OpenBSD can make computers marginally less horrible
> The bulk of the ABI compatibility is not in the kernel

So this means the Linux kernel is not as bulky and full of bugs like the article has claimed?

p.s. I am just an average Linux user who wants to know more about this

wltprgm··on Hundreds of thousands take to Hong Kong streets against controversial bill
While in this particular Hong Kong protest case, it was influenced by the west (or western values).

So my only point is that the west has caused more troubles than ever for the world. (Which is why I go on and talk about the wars etc)

Perhaps I am wrong, it was the history written by someone else.

> Massacres and atrocities are no easy things to discuss. I've spoken to survivors of the holocaust in Europe, and the Rwandan genocide, you have obviously not heard anyone participating in Tiananmen square talk about the events? It's very hard to talk so lightly about massacares when you have heard personal anecdotes and the hard ships that the people went trough.

I don't talk about this at all. (not that I am cold hearted if the impression I left for you was such, I am sorry)

edit: I made a mistake, I mean I don't talk about the details of massacres and atrocities. I just mentioned the title of them.

> because you seem to just be here to argue.

You are right. I should change my tone.

> You're not interacting with peoples' responses to you very much, just throwing out a blizzard of new accusations.

I think I have made my point even though it was harsh. This thread is about protest in Hong Kong, and what the list of accusations (as you said) don't spread too far away, since it relates to the same thing.

wltprgm··on Hundreds of thousands take to Hong Kong streets against controversial bill
Your response to my comment is silly.

I was talking about the ultimate reason why they protested, it was influenced by the west, human rights.

Not the way they were massacred, or how people memorialized them.

I am definitely stunned to know how hacker news people comprehend

edit: confirmed hacker news upvote/downvote buttons work like reddit's ones, and in turn work like facebook one except facebook doesn't have a downvote button neither

> We are not software engineers, and we won't be until regulatory bodies exist, and we develop codes of ethics.

Nobody said that you are software engineer, you can just call yourself whatever you want

Those who called themselves software engineers are indeed software engineers, no one can forbids it

Fancy term like engineer is for marketing purposes, just like you said it's prestigious, they use it because they want to impress people, anything wrong with that? No, it's correct.

And it's also correct if anyone think they don't fit the title engineer, because it's his/her opinion which the software engineers won't likely give a fuck.

No one can stop them from using the term.

As for the Canada's law, the earth is bigger than that AFAIK. China and US software engineers are waiting for arrest. Except for Texas FYI

Standardization/basic practices mean shits by the way, it's research and development phases during engineering, people can invent what they want in their own ways as long as their products are legit

From Wikipedia:

> Engineers, as practitioners of engineering, are people who invent, design, analyse, build, and test machines, systems, structures and materials to fulfill objectives and requirements while considering the limitations imposed by practicality, regulation, safety, and cost.

You are right about the hates for pipenv, but I don't know that the creator hates it too.

edit: sorry I misunderstood, the creator of pipenv doesn't hate pipenv

I have a PHP Yii2 web project basically using composer (something like pip for Python) that the old project maintainer chose not to use a specific version for dependencies.

I am stunned when I do composer update, because it basically updates every dependencies.

When I asked one of the seniors, he said yea, I have to check every single part of the website and make sure it doesn't break.

I don't know anymore.

Not entirely correct

if someone doesn't understand your explanation, it might be that you don't understand the person well enough or you don't know the correct way to explain to that person in a plain language

this topic never stops, trust me

it's time for you guys to realize this effect from calling yourself "coders"/"programmers"/"problem solvers" are nothing but marketing

It's just to impress those who don't know otherwise

wltprgm··on Absolute truths I unlearned as junior developer
it's fair to say that if you don't like it, then don't speak about it

that's your definition of engineering, or whatever officials that define it

more so, who cares about your skills other than your employer? And your employer cares about your skills, why should he care about your title?

even if other programmers who like to address themselves as software engineers, is it up to you to decide whether they can be hired?

It's just a title for god's sake

> If you want to go around the central objective of the exercise - which is to adapt yourself to solve the problem - at the end you are only cheating yourself.

So the "central objective" of that problem is not important? And we shouldn't rely/memorize on 1 unique way of problem solving?

To understand your correctly, you mean we shouldn't just learn to solve an unique problem, but approach the problem like a general problem solver/thinker?

I am used to work on understanding/learning solutions to mathematics questions when I don't know how to solve them myself. And keep on practising similar questions and eventually harder questions to get an A in exams or answering the doubts of my friends.

When I have started to do programming nearly a year ago, It's really squeezing my brain hard. So far, I can tell that only one type of mathematics is similar to programming, is those questions that ask us to derive complex equations for n (like big o notation)
