wjh_··on [dead]
Did someone mention sleep masks?

Otherwise an interesting article, though I'm unsure of the credibility of the information it provides - it's basically just an advertisement.

wjh_··on Linus' reply on Git and SHA-1 collision
A host that you control.
wjh_··on Writing an Interpreter in Go: The Paperback Edition
I think I might be buying this, seems like a good book! Have never heard of it before.
wjh_··on BitTorrent vs. HTTP
While I admit that this is less than ideal, it's not quite as bad as it may seem.

For instance, if it's a movie being streamed, the majority of connections will finish downloading the movie long before the user finishes watching, making a pretty decent seed time. Those with a slower connection wouldn't have made a particularly great seed anyway.

wjh_··on Ask HN: Why aren't Unicode passwords a big thing?
I don't have any experience with this, but I suppose it's probably due to a) a lack of awareness and b) a lack of support.

For one, people probably aren't aware enough of unicode to think to use a unicode character in their password, and they probably also aren't aware of how to actually type a unicode character.

Plus, website support for unicode chars is... unpredictable. If I set my password to "foo1234", then I expect it to be "foo1234", not just "foo" and a lack of any error. Similar to how password length is sometimes just randomly truncated.

wjh_··on Ask HN: Why productivity matters to you?
It's not so much the productivity that means things to me.

I want to feel like I'm achieving things, and if I sit about all day doing nothing then that isn't going to happen. The only way to achieve things is to be productive.

Plus it feels great at the end of the day, to look back and see everything you've managed to do.

wjh_··on Ultrasound Tracking Could Be Used to Deanonymize Tor Users
I'm thinking perhaps browsers should ask for speaker permissions, much like they already do for microphones and cameras.
wjh_··on UK's Investigatory Powers Act: Enshrining Parallel Construction in English Law
Agree with this one, they also want volunteers and have a variety of technical projects they're working on.
wjh_··on Why 30 is the decade friends disappear
A lot of the discussion here makes me think that perhaps there should be a coffee meetup HN thread or something similar posted regularly. Comment where you are, a way to contact you, and try to meet new people :)
wjh_··on SSLH – Access https and ssh from the same port
I've found it to be very useful, my college firewall blocks pretty much all ports except 80 and 443. Using this I can both host websites over HTTPS, while being able to SSH into my server.
wjh_··on Ask HN: Computer Science university courses in the UK
Because I still find the theory interesting, I'd just prefer a CS course that tends a bit more towards the practical than the theoretical. Having seen a lot of the optional modules at several universities it looks like this would definitely be doable.

Plus the few courses I've seen in Software Engineering are a lot less diverse than those in CS.

wjh_··on John Carmack's son's game in Racket
That does actually seem like it might be better, I admit Forge and Java would probably seem quite daunting to someone new. I'll see what he thinks!

The only issue though, is that I think a lot of his motivation stems from potentially sharing what he has made - pretty much everyone his age has a copy of Minecraft.

wjh_··on John Carmack's son's game in Racket
What you say about Minecraft rings true. I've been trying to get my 12 year old brother into programming for a while, never really succeeded. Today I setup Forge and taught him how to make an item for Minecraft. That got him excited about programming (or at least what one can do with it) more than anything else.
