wjamesg··on Thinking of Selling on eBay using Paypal? Think Again
FYI (everyone): US Post Office offers a money order verification system to avoid bogus transactions like these. I've gone so far as to choose a meeting location around the corner from a post office location and insist on a money order from that location.

My bank (Charles Schwab Bank, U.S.) has had this for a while now. Also other cool stuff like two-factor authentication.
wjamesg··on Time Warner Cable Modem Fee Is "Hi-Tech Consumer Fraud," Lawsuits Allege
In my experience, one can not always buy his/her own modem. I was required to rent one for a Comcast Business Class internet account, specifically informed that I could not provide my own modem.
wjamesg··on Time Warner Cable Modem Fee Is "Hi-Tech Consumer Fraud," Lawsuits Allege
Same experience with Insight here (KY, USA). Since Time Warner recently bought out Insight, I wonder how that is affecting things like fees. I've been experiencing some connectivity issues lately as well, like they are imposing changes on the network (throttling?).

Related: Elsewhere (FL, USA) I was able to avoid fees by providing my own modem for a residential account (Comcast cable internet). Apparently, though, this is not an option for business accounts which require a modem rental (why?)

wjamesg··on The BufferApp Welcome Email
Agreed, keeping it simple. It'd be cool if more services resorted to well-crafted text-only emails. Never going to happen, heh.
wjamesg··on Non-hiring Practices
Sadly, I have found this to be standard procedure these days.
wjamesg··on Non-hiring Practices
I feel strongly about this. As a relatively recent college graduate who has has applied to dozens of jobs over many months, I can confirm that non-response has definitely been the status quo in my experience. Until I got numb to rejection and because accustomed to the status quo, I would feel compelled to seek out hiring managers or HR and ask, "Why don't you have the decency to even acknowledge my application status?" Instead, of course, I would simply inquire about "following up" on my application in the event that this was even possible to do.

"Go to our website" is the new mantra for hiring employers. And that's fine, but I'm stunned that many can't be the least bit bothered to set up some sort of response system. "Overwhelming number of applicants" is no excuse in the day of email...even an automated message, if phrased thoughtfully, would suffice perfectly fine.

wjamesg··on Gaping hole in Google service exposes thousands to ID theft
Same here; for me, comments tend to be a good indicator of article quality. Lower quality articles (linkbait, non-original content, etc.) need not get all the pageviews.
wjamesg··on Incentives for Drivers Who Avoid Traffic Jams
A new toll road in NC (USA) has successfully implemented an all bill-by-mail approach...I wonder if/when other existing tolls will catch on. An EZ-Pass-like device offers slightly lower rates for regular commuters.

wjamesg··on IPad Screen Burn-in and Apple’s Billions of Dollars– The Carton
I've had several similar experiences: (1) iPhone replacement for uneven LCD edge lighting, (2) iPhone replacement for quirky physical button problem, (3) Replacement of white Macbook due to malfunctioning iSight camera (even got away with newer unibody model).

Sometimes you've got to know how to approach the situation to skip past the standard questions and get the ~5min response time. As mentioned, you pay for it up front. With other brands, these sort of things aren't even considered issues.

Saw this on Reddit weeks ago (maybe a month+?). Glad to see the matter has finally been addressed.
