wizzerking··on Ask HN: Do you have to use LinkedIn to get hired?
I have been offered 2 contract positions without linked-in profiles So my answer it is not necessary. I mostly use linked-in to post articles of interest to me in the various groups as a way to promote open source code repos from authors who publish their software as well as their findings It is my hope that by posting such articles/work I will encourage more authors to publish their code so we can all grow together
wizzerking··on Ask HN: At what age is “too old” to work in tech as a software engineer?
I am 66 I have 8 years of Python,PyTorch, sci-kit learn and TensorFlow Experience I have 7 years of C# .Net Standard 2.x, and 4.x I still get contracts, and upwork, but very few interviews for full time work Most Full Time work escapes me
wizzerking··on Whoever invented USB-C deserves a Nobel Prize
My opinion is the opposite The trapezoid is no where near different enough, to prevent my short strong fingers from forcing in the USB-C upside down. I have ruined a phone, and a wireless headset, by not being very careful
wizzerking··on Ask HN: Why aren't there workstation recommendations for software engineers?
You try developing deep learning - neural networks models on an OK consumer Desktop !!!!!!!! My PCIe3 Core I 9 based system with a NVIDIA 1080 TI with 16 GB of RAM on the GPU and with 16 GB of RAM takes Days to train models with only 180K training samples. So I am pricing Motherboards, and GPU's that are PCIe4 When I developed Database software that computing power was not needed. Now that I am doing deep learning with 12 bit per pixel medical images I have SSD's32 GB of MainBoard RAM, and preferably a 16 GB GPU JUST FOR THE DEEP LEARNING and use the mainboard or another GPU for the display so x570 mainboards are my goto mother boards

wizzerking··on Ask HN: Engineers, what useful info should early stage company write in job post
How many Engineers are already present in the company What range of tasks would this particular engineer perform ? BE REALISTIC !!! If half of my time is automating current manual processes ; then maybe I am not interested
wizzerking··on Ask HN: How can I sell my patent
As an Engineer with 6 patents I am a co-author on If you want to earn money from the patent I suggest licensing your patent. If a startup approaches you, make the terms easy in the beginning working toward a % of the gross as the company matures. Most companies do not have deep pockets to outright buy your patent for money that will change your life.

wizzerking··on Why use old computers and operating systems?

wizzerking··on Why use old computers and operating systems?
When I was an independent consultant in the mountains in northern california. There were companies running devices from their Windows 7 and Window NT computers where the device manufacturer had gone belly up, quit or just decided to not support their previous products. I had several sucesses using WINE on Linux. The companies were so grateful that in some cases I get free pastry, coffee, and/or sandwiches Here in LA some schools are in a bad way so I put Linux on old hardware and teach the kids what is different between linux, libre Office, GIMP, and other FOSS software. I freely transfer my HATE of M$Soft and MAC to these young minds
wizzerking··on Ask HN: How did you decide between management and technical track?
I was in my mid 20's Silicon Valley Company I grew my team from myself and 1 employee to 6 full time employee and 2 contractors This was in 1990's The meetings were a bunch of good ole boys congratulating each other on sales, and profit sharing amounts. When everything was done after 3 months to define a new interface drawn on board, talked through, changed. When the new box was swhown to sales marketing their reaction was "I didn't know it was going to work like that !!!" I waited 1 month then quit, Never will I ever do that again Decision made people are my kryptonite !!!!!
