wiskinator··on Remembering Bob Lee
I met Bob when he interviewed me for a position on Square's embedded software team in 2013. One of my previous interviewers told me that I was being interviewed by the CTO and my anxiety spiked through the roof. Bob could obviously tell, and said "don't worry, I just like to interview all the folks using C in the interview". His problem was simple, and ruthless. Implement a circular buffer in static memory. Don't F it up.

It was the most fun I had that day, and I still use it as a gauge of how to interview folk (though I don't use that question).

wiskinator··on Repairing Your Car in Your Own Garage Is Considered Illegal in Sacramento, CA
Anecdotally, there is a correlation between being poor and working on your own car. There is likely an aspect of this law that is rich HoA members not wanting to live near poorer families, or at the very least be able to control what they do. Remember also that in this country race / ethnicity still correlates strongly with financial stability. So this law is basically "I don't want my Latino neighbors working on their cars".
wiskinator··on The great Covid and smoking cover-up?
Full disclaimer: I haven't read the article, and am just being a smartass.

What if it's because no one wants to get within 2 meters of a smoker anymore :)

wiskinator··on American EVs reduced gasoline consumption by just 0.54% in 2021
I think the simplest way to express my concern with this article is that I would like to have "just" 0.54% of Elon Musk's wealth direct deposited into my bank account tomorrow.
wiskinator··on Ask HN: How did you stop drinking?
So I ended up on a combo of meds that had a “No alcohol” provision. One was your standard mental health medication; but the other was terbinafine for a toenail fungus that wouldn’t die. The latter pretty much got me to stop drinking. Whenever I would have a drink anyway (thinking, how bad could it be anyway) the hangover the next morning was brutal - and way out of proportion to the amount drunk.

A single 12oz beer with moderate (6%) ABV would leave me with a hangover that felt like I’d tried to keep up with a bunch of 26 year olds with a death wish.

Anything more would make me actually wake up with a death wish.

This amount of negative reinforcement made it pretty unbearable to drink for the year plus I was taking the medication, and it just sort of stuck after.

To make this useful advice - maybe try doing something terrible the morning after; perhaps posting a bad programming opinion on the forum of your choice.

wiskinator··on Some things I realized about AI while contemplating slide rule prices on eBay
This has serious “old man yells at cloud” energy.
wiskinator··on Ask HN: Why isn't TikTok owned by the U.S. government?
|It’s a Trojan horse firmly embedded in the US with no oversight or regulation.

Is there any proof to this statement? It's very bold.

wiskinator··on U.S. public health agencies aren't ‘following the science,’ officials say
Yeah - this article seems like an Op Ed.
wiskinator··on U.S. public health agencies aren't ‘following the science,’ officials say
The sources this article cites regarding masking is a single pre-print that hasn't been peer reviewed yet, and it cites no sources at all for the claim that

| "Then they ignored natural immunity. Wrong again. The vast majority of children have already had Covid, but this has made no difference in the blanket mandates for childhood vaccines. And now, by mandating vaccines and boosters for young healthy people, with no strong supporting data, these agencies are only further eroding public trust."

wiskinator··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (July 2022)
That link goes to an internal “page not found” - would you mind updating it please?
wiskinator··on Ask HN: Recommend employers with positive social impact
Hah! Came here to post about our work. I’m so proud to work here.
wiskinator··on Would senior engineers be interested in working reduced hours or part time?
YES YES YES.

I'm so freaking burned out. I need some time to get my life back to a comfortable pace, and I constantly consider fully quitting my job, but that seems too drastic.

More importantly, I don't want to 100% stop working because I actually do love working. I just can't figure out how to care for my family, my mental and physical health, and put in 40+ hours at my job.

(Seniority wise, I've got 18 years of experience across many aspects of the industry and I've fought to remain an IC rather than take on management roles, certainly to the detriment of my career growth)

wiskinator··on Amazon more than doubles max base pay to $350k
What's a 'maximum base' pay? Is that the max salary someone with the right credentials could earn in an entry level position?
wiskinator··on Witness at scene of CDC lab monkeys crash has developed symptoms – Harrisburg100
Well this is nightmare fuel.
wiskinator··on Opposition to High Density Development
I have a feeling that if we spread the theory into small and midsize towns that the urban density laws were a conspiracy by the urban elite to keep cities rich and relevant we'd see them get repealed.
wiskinator··on Ask HN: Are there any 4K “dumb” televisions?
I mean, I think the why is answered in [1]. I think a lot of people like being in control of what goes on their network. For those who care about personal network security I imagine there's a big desire to not have a blob of closed source code sitting on (or anywhere near) their home network, or for that matter, their corporate network.

Also smart features on most TVs feel like they are fairly slow and seem to get in the way of using the TV as a device driven by a media stick etc. If I've decided that I only want to use an Apple TV (or Roku, or FireTV or my L33z plex client running on a Raspberry Pi), then I don't want to have to wait for my TV to load and boot its own network stack and pile of applications.

wiskinator··on Meow Hash (2018)
I love this website because I went to the link, didn't know what a PWA was, went to the root website and STILL don't know what a PWA is.

I'm going to try the old trick of saying the wrong thing so someone corrects me.

Clearly a PWA is a Pug With Attitude. Is this a Jonathon and Noodle sponsored app?

wiskinator··on The Linux Experiments YouTube channel has been terminated
You're getting downvoted, but I completely agree. 'Resistant to censorship' has become a dogwhistle for "you can post your racist / fascist BS here".
wiskinator··on The Linux Experiments YouTube channel has been terminated
In what ways? I'm just curious. The channel doesn't seem political to me either, so I want to investigate my blindspots.
wiskinator··on The compounded tragedy of conservative radio hosts dying of Covid-19
It’s so hard not to feel like they deserved it, doubly so since their promotion of false ideas surely lead to other deaths.
wiskinator··on Petaluma, CA is the first town in America to ban new gas stations.
I grew up in this town, and it has a really interesting combination that I call the 'Hippie / Farmer duality'. On the one hand Petaluma is the focal point town for a huge amount of Sonoma County's agriculture business. There are multiple places you can buy animal feed in large quantities, and there is still a large cattle auction yard in town. Combined with a local racetrack and a very car centric version of nostalgia for the 1960s and 1950s and this town could very well have been a hotbed for conservative view points in Northern California.

On the other hand, many of the people who have moved to Petaluma since the 1960s have been Hippies and other back to the land folk (or just well off, liberal urbanites looking for small town vibes). Add to this the fact that many of the farmers have been 'mom and pop' operations that have fully embraced and seen the value of the organic farming movement.

What you're left with in Petaluma is a place where some of the traditionally conservative rural families are more into environmentalism and environmental justice than some city folk, and that some of the recent city folk have moved there as a reaction against socially liberal urban life.

The perfect image for me is a Prius with an 'all lives matter' license plate frame next to a lifted truck with a 'Support your farmer: ban GMOs' bumper sticker.

It's a really great place.

wiskinator··on R/NoNewNormal has been quarantined
The only good take on this hacker news comment section :)
wiskinator··on Why worker loyalty is at a breaking point
Why are we surprised that workers are showing the same amount of loyalty to their employers as employers show to them?

The power dynamic between employer and employee is 100% in favor of the employer. Anything that pushes power back to the employee is probably for the best.

wiskinator··on Stripe Reader
I too am ex-Square, and in fact I worked on the firmware for the [https://squareup.com/us/en/hardware/contactless-chip-reader]... Reader for Contactless and Chip). All hardware design, from the external design through the mechanical and electrical is done in house.

Not going to say that Stripe was uh... influenced by the design, but I do think that imitation is a nice form of flattery.

wiskinator··on Ask HN: If you could work remote where would you live?
I'm going to stay right here in San Francisco, I was born in this city and I've gotten lucky enough to be able to afford to live here, so I'm in for the long haul.
wiskinator··on Ask HN: If you could work remote where would you live?
If you think 'homeless people' are one of the bad things, then I think you're part of the problem, and would politely ask you to help come up with a solution.
