wishiknew··on Ask HN: Switching from OS X to Linux
Opera's whole UI is hidpi enabled, unlike with FF and Chrome. You might want to give it a try.
wishiknew··on Ask HN: Switching from OS X to Linux
I switched a few weeks ago because I was tired of OS X, too. I tried every distribution out there and the one I've kept is Debian Jessie. Debian is great in that it's a simple and stable Gnome experience. Linux can be much more dangerous than OS X in terms of applications crashing badly, so I like the fact that I have an OS that I have thoroughly tested, fixed, and that won't move much in years. And I can get both that and a few up to date packages thanks to package pinning.

Alfred is the tool that I was afraid I couldn't have. I tried a few solutions but they just didn't do it for me. Gnome's default search bar is hard to customize and the various launchers out there either installed huge libraries or weren't hidpi enabled. I ended up writing my own launcher. When I hit Win+Space, a terminal opens and runs a script of mine who relies on the fuzzy finder fzf by junegunn. I use it to open files, search the web, log me into websites automatically with KeePassX, handle the music that's being played, etc.

I actually wrote an article on this but I haven't had the time to create the blog I wanted to put it on. If you're interested, give me your email and I'll send it to you with the code I actually use.

wishiknew··on Ask HN: Should I self host?
Even if I had more revenue I would rather have a more unified hosting setup with billing occurring at one place. The situation is pretty confusing for me right now - I'm a minimalist and I like simplicity. Speaking of that, I've just realized that if I could simply get rid of WordPress, I wouldn't need such complexity. And I think this is what I must do. What kind of junk is a piece of software that requires so many engineers' work (theme designers, plugin developers and sys admins) to load at normal speeds? This is ridiculous, my site is mostly static. I've been playing with Hugo (gohugo.io) this weekend for another project and I've just realized it might be a perfect match.
wishiknew··on Advice for young graduates looking for a job
That's a good question and something I would have elaborated on if it wasn't for the 2'000 characters limit. I find these companies either by visiting websites I've been a happy client of (and who are in a niche I'm probably interested in) or by searching for technological keywords (HTML5, PHP, web agency, etc.) on Google with results limited to my country. In my case the companies I click with tend to use the (mainstream) technologies I want to work with. I wouldn't know how to do if I were in a more abstract field such as the ones you mention, sorry.
wishiknew··on The Future of Work – Robert Skidelsky (2014) [video]
As much as I like this basic income idea, I seriously doubt it's going to happen one day. In Praise of Idleness was written in 1932 and machines haven't stopped to replace jobs, they've even become much quicker at it. Yet the vast majority of Western citizens couldn't imagine a year without a job, and feel depressed when they're let go, even if they have side money.

Idleness is an aristocratic taste – those who have it in today's world and don't have the corresponding aristocratic amount of money will have to suffer this through. They could be doing what they love and send good vibrations with their art or social work but no, the population doesn't understand higher than mediocre views and couldn't stand financing such a "lazy bunch".

How sad.

wishiknew··on Ask HN: Is IT actually not for me?
I know, my original post was much longer but I had to trim it to 2'000 characters. I've been interviewed by a good web agency who doesn't have anything for me right now but who said they liked my profile. (Luckily I don't have to deal with anxiety during interviews because that would make the problem impossible to solve.) I've also been interviewed on the phone and took a Java test for a second company – still waiting on their opinion on the test. Finally, I want to try to become a freelancer if I don't find anything by the end of March.
wishiknew··on Ask HN: Is tech support becoming a bad long-term career choice?
You're right. Can't believe I already forgot I helped a 20-something girl get rid of Windows software ads about a week ago.

Thanks for your feedback and some good links! Hope I get rejected by the companies I'm in touch with so that I have a few months to get into this freelance repair thing. I do feel like a freelancer and it sounds like I would be much happier if I were able to become one.

This is a great reminder, thank you so much. I am definitely guilty of considering HN-level programming a standard that it is not.

I've thought about improving my resume but I've had an excellent web agency respond positively to it (and say they liked me after the interview – no position for me right now though). So far I've taken this as a sign that my resume is good and so I'm afraid that making something trendier or more creative (mine's rather classic) might make myself look desperate/fake? On internships: I'm currently looking for one.
