wisemang··on Tom Lehrer has died
To the downvoter — this is a quote from the liner notes of one of his albums, where he published middling to damning reviews of his concert lol.

“Played piano acceptably.”
wisemang··on Managing time when time doesn't exist
As if you could kill time without injuring eternity. (Thoreau)
wisemang··on A critical look at MCP
Is it the redundancy? Or is it because markup is a more natural way to annotate language, which obviously is what LLMs are all about?

Genuinely curious, I don’t know the answer. But intuitively JSON is nice for easy to read payloads for transport but to be able to provide rich context around specific parts of text seems right up XML’s alley?

wisemang··on A Map of British Dialects (2023)
As a Canadian, obviously not.

(For real though we don’t use that word for argument or whatever.)

wisemang··on Show HN: I made a free tool that analyzes SEC filings and posts detailed reports
This is correct. GP’s rule should be adhered to for bar charts though. Absolute values there are expected. For line charts continuous (ish) over time, people are usually more interested in relative change in a time period so ok if y axis starts closer to the minimum value of the series in that range.
wisemang··on ‘Bluey’s World’: How a Cute Aussie Puppy Became a Juggernaut
It’s very calm, which I really appreciate about it compared to the wild energy in other shows. Sadly my toddler is more drawn to the intense colours and action of Paw Patrol.

Which is a whole other thing in this age of streaming.. when they know you could just pick something else, they will immediately complain and ask for that instead of just needing to accept what is being shown.

wisemang··on GSA Eliminates 18F
That is definitely not what neoliberalism is about. GP is correct (though the current situation seems to be something much more extreme).
wisemang··on TikTok goes dark in the US
GP’s quote was taken from directly below yours.
wisemang··on A Bivariate Map with Observable Plot
Isn’t that the case? Or was your recommendation taken on board in the 40 minutes since you posted this and I read the article?

Anyway one improvement I could see would be adding something to the legend like “hot and dry” and “hot and humid” or similar to clarify a combined interpretation of the variables.

wisemang··on I automated my job application process
However when I asked it to write and run a python script to count them, it got it right.
wisemang··on I automated my job application process
You’re absolutely right to ask for a recheck! Let’s count carefully: • R in Razzleberry: • 1st R: In “Razzle” • 2nd R: In “Razzle” • 3rd R: In “berry” • 4th R: In “berry”

Total: 4 Rs in “razzleberry.”

No changes—still 4 Rs! Let me know if I can clarify further.

wisemang··on I automated my job application process
From iOS app, paid 4o

> There are 4 Rs in “razzleberry.”

wisemang··on Google Maps leads three men to death as car plunges from incomplete bridge
Was in San Salvador, El Salvador not long ago and it seemed as though google Maps was straight up hallucinating eating establishments. Walked around a bunch trying to find spots for lunch that were in the map but there was nothing of the sort at the given addresses / locations. There were even pictures of legit looking places, was quite confusing.
wisemang··on 1 Dataset. 100 Visualizations
Histogram uses bars but it illustrates frequency in buckets whereas by bars OP likely means more categorical in terms of what the bar represents.
wisemang··on The Battle Line at Louvain
Possibly at least somewhat. I think it also comes from getting disillusioned by legitimately terrible things done by the US in the name of “democracy” e.g. Latin American death squads in the 70s/80s, Iraq war and war on terror, etc.

People can’t seem to hold the idea of multiple countries being problematic and doing objectionable things. Certainly information ops from your usual suspects feed into this.

wisemang··on The Battle Line at Louvain
Look up tankies[0] —- people who support these atrocities by imperialists and other problematic regimes because they’re so conditioned against the US / Western nations that they assume anyone acting against the west’s interests must be doing good.

wisemang··on QNX is now free for anything non-commercial, plus there's an RPi image
I’d be very surprised! I thought it was very much an Ontario ministry of education thing.
wisemang··on RCE Vulnerability in QBittorrent
Indeed, we’re in agreement. Though I’d suggest a fixed disclosure timeframe at time of reporting. Maybe with an option to extend in cases where the fix is more complex than anticipated.
wisemang··on If you need the money, don't take the job
Also consider oligopolies, for example the shit show that is Canadian telecom.
wisemang··on RCE Vulnerability in QBittorrent
Your take is the dangerous one. I don’t disagree that

> the vast majority of security vulnerabilities in software are not actively exploited

However I’d say your explanation that it’s

> because no one knows about them

is not necessarily the reason why.

If the vendor or developer isn’t fixing things, going public is the correct option. (I agree some lead time / attempt at coordinated disclosure is preferable here.)

wisemang··on Woman, 82, still rides same bike she was given at 13
I once missed a flight because of this. I believe it is (or was) linked to the volume level on the phone.

And yeah, my decades-old alarm clock remains reliable (though it can be a struggle to remember how to set the time after the power goes out…)

> Human writing is short and to the point (either because they're lazy or want to save the reader's time)

Good human writing is short and to the point. (Technical writing at least.) But this is not a result of laziness — it’s actually more difficult.

“If I had more time, I would have written a shorter letter.” - Blaise Pascal, and probably others [0]

In any case I find these LLM “gotcha” comments incredibly tedious.

wisemang··on Psilocybin bests SSRI for major depression in first long-term comparison
I’d love to have an answer to this! As I said this is anecdotal, based on many years of experiences with friends, and the ones tending to have more vivid dreams seem to have more intense trips given equivalent dosage. It became a bit of a pet theory at some point so I ask about it. I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s some confirmation bias or something like that at play, but given the kind of hallucinatory nature of dreams I can also imagine some sort of linked mechanism.

I also rarely remember dreams and despite occasional exceptions wouldn’t consider most of them vivid. So I tend toward heavier dosages :)

wisemang··on Psilocybin bests SSRI for major depression in first long-term comparison
Anecdotal but whenever I’ve been asked for this guidance (having been around the block, but not a shaman by any means) I ask about the person’s dreams. Do they usually remember them, how intense are they? More intense = start with lower dose (maybe .5g). Less so maybe start with 1 or 1.5g. Of course this is subjective and relative but a rule of thumb that has worked reasonably well.

For frequency, that depends on a variety of factors I suppose.

wisemang··on Why I still blog after 15 years
Heh, my brother-in-law have described “content” as being the “love language” of our boomer dads.. the sharing of material (surprisingly often on TikTok these days) that none of us really care about yet continually gets sent out to us. Seemingly the favoured way to keep in touch.
