wiredfool··on Is the world becoming uninsurable?
It absolutely happens in steel and concrete construction in earthquake loading, when loading past the smaller earthquakes.

Plastic/non-linear deformation is intended in shear panels of steel connections and the core of well confined concrete beams/columns. The idea is to provide a lot of energy damping due to the nonlinear nature of the f*D hysteresis curve. This works long enough for the earthquake to go away and the people to get out of the building, at which point, you need a new building but hopefully no one has died.

At least not "Lua Programming in Lua"
wiredfool··on Take the Pedals Off the Bike
We _had_ a balance bike, didn't get used much.

It only took about half an hour or so of effort to get over the "I'm going to fall" fear and get the feel for how a bike actually works.

wiredfool··on Take the pedals off the bike
Worked for me, for three kids. The essential bit is getting them to not fear the lean, and not steer like they're driving a little car.
wiredfool··on Take the Pedals Off the Bike
And kids bikes can often have really screwed up geometry, just to make learning really fun.
wiredfool··on Take the pedals off the bike
No -- don't take off pedals -- and definitely don't grab the bike. Run after the kid, and nudge their shoulders one way or the other, first for balance, then for turning. They just need to not fall over for half an hour or so.

The trouble with training wheels is that they are exactly backwards to really riding a bike. You turn the handlebars like you'd be driving a car, not like you do to affect balance. You can lean to the outside of the curve to go around, rather than leaning in.

wiredfool··on Mac Mini G4 – The best « classic » Macintosh for retro-gaming?
Huh. I sent one of these to ewaste in the last 6 months.
wiredfool··on I will never need to buy a new computer again
The T420 keyboard is far better than the chicklet T430s. It’s a proper mechanical keyboard.

I’ve got both, have used both for webdev work, but compared to a modern laptop, the screens suck, the video is underpowered for 4k monitors, and the ssd interface is slow, and the trackpads are awful. On the bright side, trackpoints. (But I’m using a M13 w/ trackpoint so…. ) They’re also heavy and battery life is almost long enough to work the whole way on my bus commute, one way.

wiredfool··on How the lore of New Year defeated the law of New Year
No, that’s the tax year, not when it’s due. The standard US tax year is Jan 1 -> Dec 31.
wiredfool··on Casual Viewing – Why Netflix looks like that
It’s really hard to (really truly) ban YouTube and not ban any search engine.

You might find your child spending 2 hours a day on ddg.

wiredfool··on Casual Viewing – Why Netflix looks like that
They should bring back the prologue and the chorus.
wiredfool··on Moon
And once you internalize this, every image where there are moons pasted into the sky without understanding this will trigger you. It's like bad kerning. Once you see it, you can't unsee it.
wiredfool··on To Log into WordPress, You Now Have to Agree Pineapple on Pizza Is Good
I prefer barbequeued pineapple on a pizza, with mint and salt.
wiredfool··on Consider Negotiating with Infringers
I can definitely recommend the Vorkosigan series by Bujold. That quote is from the first one, and echoes here and there throughout.
wiredfool··on macOS 15.2 breaks the ability to copy the OS to another drive
The system data apparently contains the Time Machine backups that haven’t been flushed to your external backup, including folders that are set to be ignored.

I discovered this while trying to restore a docker vm image that was maybe ignored, while not having enough space on the drive to restore it back, because deleted versions still take up space in the system data, even when the trash is emptied.

Linode. Decking autocarrot.
wiredfool··on Hetzner cuts traffic on US VPSs, raises prices
Hetzner, in volume, is about 5x cheaper than limped for my workloads. Limped is 2-3 times cheaper than AWS, but AWS has a few things going for it that make it worth it for some workloads.
wiredfool··on I'm a developer not a compiler
Chickens absorb wifi.

(edit - favorite root cause of a reliability issue, not strongest held tech opinion)

wiredfool··on 'I had no idea being a social drinker would damage my liver by 31'
It’s a little over half a bottle of 13.5% wine (according to one sample on my counter, the full bottle is 10.1 UK units).

So no, not outlandish.

(And oddly, Irish units are larger than UK units, even though we both use the same pints)

wiredfool··on Listen to the whispers: web timing attacks that work
One thing that I’ve done where I previously had a random delay is implement a delay till a constant time from the start of the request. So all of the timing you get out is effectively how well sleep can target a time.
wiredfool··on OpenStreetMap's New Vector Tiles
It's a mapbox mvt, which is protobuf. It contains the OSM data (obviously), but it's a specific format that's in wide use (mapbox-gl, maplibre, and many other open source versions). There are similar versions in pmtiles, which is basically the same thing in a http range friendly big single file which can be hosted on S3-like storage and used directly.

The difficulty is that the stack for rendering vector tiles in the browser is different than the legacy vector->png generation that's been done for ages.

wiredfool··on OpenStreetMap's New Vector Tiles
Partially because they're completely different stacks -- the client side is WebGL + Javascript, and the server side is whatever they've been doing for 15 years.

They're probably missing a raqm/freebidi or something in the stack on the client side.

wiredfool··on My simple knowledge management and time tracking system
I just use markdown. Headline 1 for the week, project gets a headline 2, and within that there’s a ton of nested lists and code blocks.

It’s always open in my editor, so it’s quick for notes of copy paste from the terminal

wiredfool··on What I wish someone told me about Postgres
I find all caps identifiers wind up just looking like interchangeable blocks, where lowercase have word shapes. So all caps just slows down my reading.

wiredfool··on My Notes on Apple Math Notes
Not seeing it on the App Store, though it’s one of the auto completes now. Is this really a thing, and if so, where is it?
wiredfool··on Google banned me from Google Voice
I've been pondering something based on twilio or similar, but haven't found anything. Don't really need the web calling, but web sms would be useful at times.

jmp.chat doesn't really fill me with confidence, but it might be an option in an emergency.
