wingmanjd··on KISS Launcher – fast launcher for Android
KISS is probably my favorite "app" on Android. I don't need to remember where an icon is located, just a few taps (sometimes even just one) of its name in the search bar and it'll show up immediately. It's amazingly fast and does just what I need it to.
wingmanjd··on Offline voice input keyboard for Android using Nvidia's Parakeet v3
From their repo, it looks like OpenAI Whisper?

Language support

FUTO Voice Input is currently based on the OpenAI Whisper model, and could theoretically support all of the languages that OpenAI Whisper supports. However, in practice, the smaller models tend to not perform too good with languages that had fewer training hours. To avoid presenting something worse than nothing, only languages with more than 1,000 training hours are included as options in the UI:

<List of supported languages>

Language support and accuracy may expand in the future with better optimization and fine-tuned models. Feedback is welcomed about language-related issues or general language accuracy.

wingmanjd··on Offline voice input keyboard for Android using Nvidia's Parakeet v3
I had not heard of Parakeet until earlier today with Handy [1].

I've previously had good luck with FUTO's keyboard and it's companion voice input app [2] on my Android, both of which are local-only after downloading the model. I'll have to try this one out and compare them.

wingmanjd··on Ansible battle tested hardening for Linux, SSH, Nginx, MySQL
At my $DAYJOB, we have a bunch in-house saltstack states for applying the CIS benchmarks for Ubuntu, Debian, and CentOS. I never looked into it, but I always wondered if I'd be allowed to publish them publicly.
wingmanjd··on Working quickly is more important than it seems (2015)
You can also use light handkerchiefs that fall slower to the ground than balls, pins, or flaming chainsaws.
wingmanjd··on Bitbucket cleanup of free unused workspaces: what you need to know
I wrote this migration tool when we moved years back from a locally hosted Bitbucket instance to Gitlab.com. I haven't tested it recently, but happy to take merge requests to address gaps.

wingmanjd··on Computer animator and Amiga fanatic Dick van Dyke turns 100
No one mentioned it to him during production, so he didn't know.
wingmanjd··on Sam Altman’s DRAM Deal
I've been selfishly wondering the same thing. The Frame is on my shortlist (as long as the price wasn't too crazy).
wingmanjd··on Migrating Dillo from GitHub
We at $DAYJOB had an internal git server that was literally what the parent of this comment mentioned (`git init --bare`). It became a little cumbersome, so when I stumbled across forgejo, I was happy to see that importing the existing git repos was a breeze, just had to point the config to look at the existing git storage root and assign groups and permissions via the GUI.
wingmanjd··on Why 90s Movies Feel More Alive Than Anything on Netflix
Not related to the main conversation, but I'm still mad that the DVD menu of that movie gave away the reveal before the movie even started (showed someone limping and then suddenly not limping anymore as they walked down the street). There was no real twist ending since I knew the guy was lying about something.

(Vagueness intended to avoid spoilers for that 1 in 10,000 someone who hasn't seen the movie)

wingmanjd··on Google Antigravity exfiltrates data via indirect prompt injection attack
[EDIT]

I should have included the full C option:

Change state or communicate externally. The ability to call `cat` and then read results would "activate" the C option in my opinion.

wingmanjd··on Google Antigravity exfiltrates data via indirect prompt injection attack
I really liked Simon's Willison's [1] and Meta's [2] approach using the "Rule of Two". You can have no more than 2 of the following:

- A) Process untrustworthy input - B) Have access to private data - C) Be able to change external state or communicate externally.

It's not bullet-proof, but it has helped communicate to my management that these tools have inherent risk when they hit all three categories above (and any combo of them, imho).

[EDIT] added "or communicate externally" to option C.

wingmanjd··on Samsung's 60% DRAM price hike signals a new phase of global memory tightening
At $DAYJOB, we have had confirmed and paid for orders be cancelled within the last week due to price hikes. One DDR5 server configuration went from ~$13k to near $25k USD in a matter of days.

We also were looking for DDR4 memory for some older machines and that has shot up 2x as well.

Hate this AI timeline.

wingmanjd··on Okta's NextJS-0auth troubles
We're another happy FusionAuth customer. We started with self-hosted but just moved to their hosted option this year.
wingmanjd··on Valve is about to win the console generation
For what it's worth, Rocket League plays just fine on Linux if you use Proton, but your point on the others still stands.

I've had to stop playing a few games once I made the switch-over (Destiny, GTA V), but am otherwise very happy with where SteamOS/ Proton is.

wingmanjd··on I have released a 69.0MB version of Windows 7 x86
Assuming that one could get a functional networking stack up, could running `sfc /scannow` fix all the missing pieces, similar to a netboot deployment of Linux?
wingmanjd··on Nearly 90% of Windows Games Now Run on Linux
FWIW, Rocket League works just fine on Linux, but you need to set it to the Proton compatibility, not the native Linux client.
wingmanjd··on Glasses-free 3D using webcam head tracking
After watching his videos, I went out and bought an IR pen so I could mimic his digital whiteboard. I think over the years, the bluetooth stack changed, so I could no longer pair with windows.

Good memories

wingmanjd··on Micro Center and iFixit Team Up to Make Tech Repair More Accessible
I have put together my own desktop gaming rigs for decades now, but some repairs on laptops are beyond what I'm willing to do. I've twice brought laptops to the near-ish Micro Center and both times had a great experience that was reasonably priced for the hinge/ screen repairs. I try to make an excuse every few months to travel down and peruse the store. I also like their selection of 3d filament.

Can't recommend them enough!

wingmanjd··on Git, JSON and Markdown walk into bar
Coming from PHP, the lack of trailing commas in JSON always bites me. It's annoying when I rearrange the items and now the missing comma line was buried somewhere upwards.
wingmanjd··on Managing dotfiles with Make
I found Andrew Burgess's method approachable and ended up cribbing from his dotfiles concept [1] and making my own repository [2]. His method uses bash instead of make to create the symlinks defined in the links.prop file in each subdir of the repo.

I typically checkout the dotfiles repo to a personal project folder on every new OS build and then run the installer to get all my configs in place.

wingmanjd··on Why do some gamers invert their controls?
I still change any FPS game keybinds to mimic as close as I can to Descent controls.
wingmanjd··on Why do some gamers invert their controls?
I don't remember if this was the game or not, but I tend to set the settings ahead of time, and I specifically recall a game getting to this sort of in-game mechanic of look up/ look down and reversing the setting I had previously set because it assumed I didn't already choose what I wanted (e.g. it re-inverted my reverted settings back to "normal").
wingmanjd··on Two Slice, a font that's only 2px tall
I wish I had this back capability when I used to program my TI graphing calculators back in highschool!
wingmanjd··on I have left Branch and am no longer involved with Nova Launcher
FWIW, I also use KISS and I have a lot installed, maybe close to 100.

I really like the intentionality of what I launch, and I find the "search for app" faster than folders.

wingmanjd··on Show HN: Greppers – fast CLI cheat sheet with instant copy and shareable search
Neat resource!

On FF Linux, when I click on a copy command (e.g. `Grep errors in syslog`, the clipboard only contains "grep ", including those two spaces.

wingmanjd··on The ChompSaw: A Benchtop Power Tool That's Safe for Kids to Use
My wife bought one of these. First one arrived was dead on arrival, but the second works great!
wingmanjd··on Yet Another Zip Trick
Since docx files are similar to a zip file with the extension changed, could this trick fake out Microsoft Word?
wingmanjd··on The FAIR Package Manager: Decentralized WordPress infrastructure
I wrote a Wordpress to Grav exporter [1], which brings over most content (posts, pages, users, groups, attachments, some site-metadata, etc). I also wrote a Drupal 7 one, but I haven't touched that in a long while.

After exporting from either CMS, it's pretty close to drag/ drop onto the grav instance and everything should "Just Work (tm)".
