winfred··on Editorial: "How piracy changed my life"
You are overly western-centric, if you honestly think that the world in the 1990's is any different than it is today.

The only difference is that the there has been a shift of development, where some Eastern European and South American countries can now afford software licensing, but at the same time massive numbers of people in Africa and Asia have reached wealth levels that are sufficient for buying computers yet too low to afford the software.

winfred··on New HN users: do not overlook the "Lists" feature
That's so funny... I noticed something was wrong when I received more karma than expected for my first couple of posts, but I didn't know why. Some people are probably using noobcomments to reward new posters with karma (I thought HN used a secret internal multiplier for the first couple of posts, but this is a much better explanation).
winfred··on “Let The Hacking Begin” Declares Person Who Hacked Zuckerberg’s Facebook Page
Drunk intern that left three months ago and no password change policy on the account (*which I assume is used by the PR department, not Zuckerberg himself) .
winfred··on Soccket: Kick a Ball, Light a Room
I've looked at this "product" a while back when it showed up on Reddit (It's been around for about three years). If you look for at the background info of the designers, you'll see they have a marketing background, not engineering. And to construct their prototype, they actually took on those shake flashlights apart and stuck it in a ball.
winfred··on Getaround: Peer-to-peer car sharing and car rental startup
"Malloy adds that Zipcar's proprietary security systems are installed throughout its fleet to prevent car theft."

winfred··on The first privately owned EPIC camera has already been stolen
That's quite obviously the case. A normal burglar will always try his best to avoid breaking and entering in a house where people are at home.
winfred··on Oooh - I'd kill for a four day week...
Salaries are low in the Netherlands for IT people. I'm a Windows admin and also moved and went from pretax 34K euros in Amsterdam to $110K in California in 2006.Then add on top of that a sales tax and an income tax that are each roughly 10% lower in the US. Even if you compensate for lower benefits, cost of living differences and a possible increase of my value due to additional skills learned, there is a massive difference. I practically went from rags to riches just by moving (and also went from about 8 weeks vacation a year to... nothing :).
winfred··on Wired's Response to Glenn Greenwald (re:Lamo-Manning Chat Logs)
I'm not sure what to think of these articles from Salon and Wired. Greenwald did have one question, that remains unanswered as far as I know. Why did Manning contact Lamo?
