willsoon··on What makes switching to GNU Linux almost impossible for many?
Manjaro user. Yes, I use the console. Because I want to! In many scenarios you dont want to run and entire gui just to do a search, or do some other thing in which you end up typing anyway. Of course I can update my core in visual mode on the fly. I'm assuming Windows can do that as well.
willsoon··on What makes switching to GNU Linux almost impossible for many?
That's not true. Nowadays, even using the mouse to move files works well.Of course, it is not recommended on any machine or operating system.

No developer here. IDK. My boss uses those Apple things and stuff. And our business was a bit sensitive at the time. So I insisted that we use our own servers. He told me once when he was dealing with some trivial Word formatting: We old guys know nothing but Google Docs. And he's older than me. And I remember struggling with a bunch of code-like characters to centre my title... in Wordstar? LaTeX is crystal clear by comparison. Maybe some people like machines. And some people can't learn anymore.
willsoon··on Are Pop Lyrics Getting More Repetitive?
Wait a nanosecond. It is assumed that you do not do this. Besides, these are the top ten, it means what the $population hears the most, especially the young ones: these two entities are sometimes not quite good. Right now a song is playing in the loudspeakers with the following lyrics: Dreaming of enhanced feelings ... words without loss of meaning ... known limits shall give away ... fresh that won't decay ... breathing craft and will. Circa 2005. And of course it is a pop song, even if it never reached the top. Catchy melody, good instrumentation, 4/4, verse verse chorus etc. I know a song about tectonic plates by a very popular guitarist and songwriter, I could summarise it using my mind algorithm: we live in an ocean of fire ¿and how about you? He also wrote a song about what it means to take your pets for a walk. The algorithm's summary could be: why ... walk ... dog.

This afternoon I was waiting for my man. 80 bucks in my hand. He sells me medicine that I know I need, but I also know is hard to get. Because the physicist thinks that he is God and that he decides who is going to live and who is going to die; he thinks that he can preach about everything.
willsoon··on An untold story of LSD psychotherapy in communist Czechoslovakia
Absolutely. Both are necessary.
willsoon··on An untold story of LSD psychotherapy in communist Czechoslovakia
Well, psicosis is like gravity. I have not experienced psicosis, but I have experienced episodes of psicosis. The first time was when I had a little accident where I broke a glass with my forehead. The second time was when I was awake for 3 days in a row.
willsoon··on An untold story of LSD psychotherapy in communist Czechoslovakia
Maybe in the USA. Where I live I got some LSD once in my life. A guy sold me some n-bome as LSD. By the time I felt the acid on my tongue, it was too late. I saw Fenrir the Wolf eating the moon. I saw the bricks of a wall propeller outside, like in a film about dreams. But that was all. Nothing even close.

Sorry to be so off topic or dumb. I read a user comment about a Freudian observation. The phantom. So I log on and try to reply... Is hn the one who deletes bad hombres? Or is it bad hombres who deletes his posts?
willsoon··on Fun is Dead
In other languages, irony is saying one word for another. Basically, you can stretch the meaning. In English, it seems to mean something different: a fuzzy oxymoron-like thing. If this is wrong, sorry, not a native English speaker here.
willsoon··on Most 16-year-olds don't have servers in their rooms
I don't even lift. This 16 year old guy during the covid is going the same way as me, but I'm in my 50s. The story is my story is just like me that Im very happy with him and Im sending him the best of wishes and ---if you can read this --- Im proud of you. And I am jealous. Man, you are 16 and you must know that you are achieving so much, especially because you are free and brave. We need more people like you. Edit: Im not a dev oc. I am a lawyer.
willsoon··on Humans as Cyborgs
I have no problem with a ram paging me, but yes, I would have a problem with a long-term memory thing. And as for organ transplants, I have no problem with them, as long as they are made from material that has not been taken from another human being. Yes, I know, when the time comes, I would like to live to at least finish the project I have on my desk. But.

I don't know for sure. And certainly we are not what you call "leftists" in HN. But let me say this on a personal level. I know that people sometimes, all the time, often, certainly, behave stupidly. But I want to believe, ergo I believe, that people can make good decisions, that there is such a thing as "common sense". Looking at the facts sometimes made me sad. Maybe people can't think for themselves, and then they can't choose. But I prefer not to think in terms of peasants and elites, even if history tells me so and Ortega y Gasset tells me how it works. I want to believe that we are capable of governing our lives. I want to believe. Forgive me for expressing not a fact, but the way I think about democracy.
willsoon··on Stop Worrying About Deepfakes
You are right not to rely on people's intelligence, but we are obliged to do so because we are not monarchists and we believe in democracy, or at least we try to.
willsoon··on Stop Worrying About Deepfakes
Just like the first time I saw the old lady on the surf table standing up in the sky to welcome me to the Internet and offer herself as my guide, I knew it couldn't be real and suspected that there was some irony in the whole wonderful scene.
willsoon··on Stop Worrying About Deepfakes
Well, yes. I saw Biden recite a copipasta from beginning to end. I still marvel at how well it's done. The skill of the AI or whatever, or the person who did it, approaches art. I still don't believe for a second that it's real, because it's a copypasta, you know? And especially because I am a human being with normal intelligence.
willsoon··on Borges and AI
Pierre Menard is a magician. He is trying to create the ultimate form of reader: a reader who can read The Capital as a novel.
willsoon··on Borges and AI
Kafka wrote a little story like that: I won't quote it. They let them choose between being kings or being messengers for the kings. Because they were children, they all chose to be messengers for the kings, and now they were running all over the world carrying messages that nobody understood. Well, that was the Internet, wasn't it?
willsoon··on Borges and AI
I don't see the connection. I was a heavy B. reader in my day. But I remember him mentioning a Chesterton story where the machine eats its master. B. introduces me to Chesterton, to the Sartor Resartor, to the Bible, to Cthullu --- and then I can't even read enough English. Now, long after I've made B.'s break --- that it's all right, it's necessary --- I see how great his influence is in almost everything, bc culture is not a package of flooring you can buy one a day. It's a big warehouse of everything you can't buy, but in one lot.

Well, I am not in the USA, but I think that in the whole of the West you cannot incriminate yourself. But thank you, Your Honour.
willsoon··on New plans for self-hosted Zulip customers
Zulip has always had this weird behaviour. I remember using it a few years ago until they wouldn't let me back up the whole site because it would compromise the security of my users' messages. Sure, that was true, and I could read the messages of the whole office if I did that. But someone has to be the one who can do it and doesn't. I have been that person in my office for years, and I have never read an email that was not addressed to me, and I have no intention of doing so in the future. Anyway, those are my principles, and if you don't like them, I've got others. In any case, people in the office would be a lot safer depending on my behaviour than on the behaviour of who knows who. To this day, there are colleagues who ask me to check that they haven't received a message with (for example) the following error: hharris@ to harris@. Migadu has a catch-all function, but I don't use it. Life is hard enough dealing with my weaknesses, I just hope other people know how to deal with theirs and that's it. Nota bene: I used to host Zulip myself. I can't remember why they wanted me to join the server. Otherwise Zulip was great, but truth is a good policy. Truth is a necessary policy. You will not go wrong by telling the truth: "This service will be paid for at some point, we are testing it on you. Use it at your own risk, when the free part is over we will send you a teddy bear with a Z embroidered on it".

willsoon··on Is the reversal curse in LLMs real?
Oh Cantor, Cantor,

bitter pale Cantor,

you pale ascetic,

your twist was epic,

so I live in silence,

in sadness I crave,

all for that book,

you wrote and I read.

willsoon··on Is the reversal curse in LLMs real?
You are right. You are thinking correctly. But "the apple is red" might not mean that this particular apple belongs ---to put it in your wording--- to the category red, but that the category of things we call apple also belongs to the category of things that are red. And generally speaking, I think that is the meaning.
