willnorris··on Go, REST APIs, and Pointers
sure it's valid JSON, but it really depends on the API as to whether it handles null values properly when it's expecting some other type. I honestly haven't tried that with the GitHub API, but based on what I've seen it probably handles it fine. Others may not.

yeah, that's similar to the field mask that was discussed on the issue (https://github.com/google/go-github/issues/19#issuecomment-2...), though your approach does provide some nice encapsulation. Given how large some of the GitHub data types are, you'd probably want to auto-generate the setter methods, similar to what goprotobuf does for accessor methods.
willnorris··on WTFPL – Do What the Fuck You Want to Public License
Toybox (http://landley.net/toybox/) takes an interesting approach in that they use the ISC license, minus the notice clause. (Strangely, they call call it a 2-clause BSD license, even though it really isn't, but whatever). I'm generally not a fan of license proliferation, but I do kinda like what they've done here.

And the lack of disclaimer of warranty in the WTFPL is not fear-mongering... it's a real issue, and one of the reasons we (Google) don't allow our engineers to use it.

willnorris··on Google, make Google Analytics HTTPS by default
add to your tracking JS: _gaq.push(['_gat._forceSSL']);

willnorris··on A basic guide to when and how to deploy HTTPS
because if security and privacy is only limited to sensitive or controversial sites, then the use of security and privacy become suspect. If ALL internet traffic were encrypted, it would make surveillance that much more difficult because you can't find the signal in the noise. Cory Doctorow's book, Little Brother, talks a bit about this... in fact, that book was one of the motivations for Google starting to encrypt web search traffic years ago.

do you not think that the revelations in the last year might change that?

That's the right GitHub org, the samples should be showing up there soon.
willnorris··on Google at GitHub
as best I can tell, that appears to be a limitation of organizations on GitHub. For example, it doesn't look like you can follow github.com/facebook or github.com/yahoo either.
willnorris··on Google at GitHub
Google is still very committed to providing a great place to host open source projects at http://code.google.com/hosting, that has not changed. But many of us are also fans of GitHub, and recognize that there is a great community of developers there (particularly in the ruby community).

The Google account on GitHub has been setup simply as a place where some open source Google projects can be mirrored. As another commenter noted, this is actually one of the points of a DVCS.

willnorris··on What 2012 Holds for Google
Google most certainly has been focusing this past year, and will continue to do so into 2012. It wasn't just rhetoric when Larry said back in July: "Greater focus has also been another big feature for me this quarter--more wood behind fewer arrows".
