willmadden··on Why Do Fewer Renters Expect to Move?
Yes, then we can build a company store where the slav... er, "employees" can shop and discuss how to be more productive on their projects!
willmadden··on US Treasury undertakes historic intervention in yen market
Thank you.
willmadden··on AI's top startups are barely publishing their research
Anthropic and OpenAI have proven themselves to be aspiring monopolists through their positions and actions. Why would you want to share your research with them?
willmadden··on Our position on open-weights models
"All sufficiently capable models, open and closed, should go through mandatory safety testing."

I love how they invoke fear of "terrorism" to justify their oppressive position.

Anthropic would love the US to do everything in this list under the guise of "safety testing":

willmadden··on Elevated errors on Claude Opus 5
Or a strikethrough token!
willmadden··on It's getting harder to focus every day
It's more than information overload. It's an overabundance of distractions specifically designed to steal your attention. I block dark pattern sites during working hours. It helps immensely.
willmadden··on Startup founders urge U.S. government not to shut off Chinese open weight AI
Ok, but in 24 months that's the equivalent of downloading 100 variations of MSDOS. Torrents and vpn exist. I think this is more of a problem for corporations.
willmadden··on Startup founders urge U.S. government not to shut off Chinese open weight AI
They'll do the "tornado cash under Biden" routine most likely.
willmadden··on Startup founders urge U.S. government not to shut off Chinese open weight AI
Filtering based on hardware is super helpful. Everyone should do this. There are millions of models, and most of them require a server room to load and run.
willmadden··on DARPA, U.S. Air Force fly AI-controlled F-16
What a waste of resources.
willmadden··on Former NOAA employees built Climate.us to preserve climate data and resources
I would like to see climate research funded, but it needs to be de-politicized and stop being used to push fear propaganda and sinister policies.

They used it to flat out destroy the economies in much of Europe, while somehow China and India were ignored despite being orders of magnitude bigger problems, according to their own narrative.

If any of the above were honest, there would have been blanket trade restrictions and sanctions on China and India so quickly it would make your head spin.

willmadden··on Every new car sold in the European Union must include a driver monitoring camera
Politics on this site is as astroturfed/censored as reddit, and the moderators are interchangeable. It's good for tech news.
willmadden··on Every new car sold in the European Union must include a driver monitoring camera
Fun fact: there are significantly more heat deaths in Europe than car fatalities.

Interesting priorities...

willmadden··on Global review confirms mRNA vaccines are safe, effective and full of promise
Then, therefore, this article is making broad, bold claims without accessible proof.
willmadden··on Global review confirms mRNA vaccines are safe, effective and full of promise
I saw that and described the page you linked. The actual study is gate kept behind a paywall or "institutional access".

"Get full text access - Log in, subscribe or purchase for full access."

willmadden··on Global review confirms mRNA vaccines are safe, effective and full of promise
I've heard that one before.
willmadden··on Global review confirms mRNA vaccines are safe, effective and full of promise
The link in the article does not show the study, just a list of references, a summary and the researchers who published it. How many of the researchers who published this study have conflicts of interest? Where is the full study for review?
willmadden··on A retrospective of my time on the internet
Most of the old internet could be restored with the right search engine and browser. Index all of the invasive BS to page 100 or the results, and put the interesting/relevant things up front. People might pay for it. You could do some of it with an extension.
willmadden··on Supreme Court upholds broad conception of birthright citizenship
I agree. I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if the US balkanizes. That might not be a bad thing if it can happen peacefully.
willmadden··on FDA advisors unanimously vote to approve Moderna's mRNA after agency drama
I guarantee that's in a powerpoint presentation somewhere at Pfizer.
willmadden··on US Supreme Court rules geofence warrants require constitutional protections
They think that because governments have a nasty history of killing tens of millions of their own people and need to be restrained.
willmadden··on Ford AI hiccups push carmaker to rehire ‘gray beard’ inspectors
Whoopsie, quick, let's boost our quarterly bonus by 50% for being bold and experimental.
willmadden··on The CAPTCHA arms race: from distorted text to browser identity
The best browsers that do not leave fingerprints do so by making your fingerprint look like every other fingerprint. Cydec used to have a plugin that actually worked for randomizing everything, but support ended. Maintenance for that must have been a nightmare. The best approach now is to blend in by looking like everyone else doing the same thing.
willmadden··on LastPass notifies users of yet another data breach
You put your passwords in Google Sheets? The data there is not encrypted at rest. Google has 191k employees in countries like China, India, and Pakistan who could potentially access your records. Make sure you use something that encrypts your data at rest, preferably on a device you own and control.
willmadden··on LastPass notifies users of yet another data breach
I find it hard to believe that LastPass still has users.
willmadden··on The CAPTCHA arms race: from distorted text to browser identity
They give you that (or hieroglyphics) if you are using certain VPNs and don't leave a specific browser fingerprint.
willmadden··on FDA advisors unanimously vote to approve Moderna's mRNA after agency drama
After the lies and misinformation we now know we were fed during the COVID era, you would have to be insane to blindly trust this group again, especially the hacker news astroturf squad that's downvoting my comments. Hard data studies only from independent researchers, preferably double blind placebo controlled, and sterilizing vaccines only, not these leaky "get your booster this week before it mutates again" treatments.
willmadden··on FDA advisors unanimously vote to approve Moderna's mRNA after agency drama
Thanks. 10 our of 13 of the researchers work for Moderna or another pharma company. That "study" might as well be a marketing brochure.
willmadden··on FDA advisors unanimously vote to approve Moderna's mRNA after agency drama
Flu vaccines aren't immunizing vaccines. They protect against specific strains, and half the time they immunize against a strain that doesn't become widespread and do very little or nothing to protect you. They have side effects which vary widely in severity depending on the specific vaccine.

This article has no data about why mRNA flu vaccines will improve these outcomes, and has no data about the risk/benefit ratio or how it was calculated. It doesn't even cite the "studies" it mentions. It's a remarkably bad article written for low information readers by a low information author.

Hard pass until I see some hard data.

willmadden··on The brain was not designed for this much bad news
Avoiding the news and consuming it on your own terms infrequently is a fantastic way to solve this problem. Step 1: cut your cable and use your television as a computer monitor only. Source: myself.
