williamscales··on Using NASA’s SMAP satellite to detect L-band interference
Looks like they’re available here: https://nsidc.org/data/smap/data

And there’s some info here: https://smap.jpl.nasa.gov/data/

Very cool stuff!

williamscales··on Apple violated antitrust ruling, judge finds
Usually if the article is on Apple News+ it will come up if you search the headline on the “following” tab
williamscales··on Widespread power outage in Spain and Portugal
I’m no expert but I think it has to do with this effect: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vortex-induced_vibration

See also: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aeolian_harp

Edit: might be a completely different kind of oscillation than I was thinking of. https://news.sky.com/story/spain-portugal-power-outage-lates...

So I would also like to understand how this works :)

williamscales··on Virginia passes law to enforce maximum vehicle speeds for repeat speeders
I read GP as sarcastic, as in it’s not an onerous burden at all
williamscales··on How a single line of code could brick your iPhone
That’s definitely the one I thought of
williamscales··on The Policy Puppetry Attack: Novel bypass for major LLMs
It looks like later in the article they drop some of the pseudo-xml and it still works.

I wonder if it’s something like: the model’s training set included examples of programs configured using xml, so it’s more likely to treat xml input that way.

williamscales··on The Policy Puppetry Prompt: Novel bypass for major LLMs
As far as I can tell, one can get a pretty thorough summary of all the public information on the construction of nuclear weapons from Wikipedia.
williamscales··on Street address errors in Google Maps
Google _could_ cross reference home addresses and home locations from phones with Google Maps.

They don’t need to understand how addresses work, just trust that most users have put in their home address correctly.

If we’re going to have all our data siphoned up and aggregated it would be nice if there were some useful side benefits.

williamscales··on You wouldn't steal a font
There are definitely fonts that are nearly identical copies, e.g. Palladio is a clone of Palatino (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palatino#Free_and_open-source_...)
williamscales··on Everyone knows your location, Part 2: try it yourself and share the results
You would need to be rooted for that sort of blocking to be an option, right?
williamscales··on Show HN: Undercutf1 – F1 Live Timing TUI with Driver Tracker, Variable Delay
I just tried it on Windows and it seems to work for me :)

Thanks! This is awesome work and I'm looking forward to tomorrow with much excitement.

williamscales··on Show HN: Undercutf1 – F1 Live Timing TUI with Driver Tracker, Variable Delay
The creator mentioned in another reply that they had only tested on MacOS. I’m going to try on Linux later.
williamscales··on Show HN: Undercutf1 – F1 Live Timing TUI with Driver Tracker, Variable Delay
I installed on Windows using the dotnet method and it doesn't seem to work. The top line with Quit / Cursor / Session / etc shows up but none of the keys do anything.

I was hoping to test it out during the session currently going on :)

williamscales··on Zoom outage caused by accidental 'shutting down' of the zoom.us domain
It would only be pronounced as "uhhss" as part of a domain hack. Otherwise "you ess". Source: am from USA.
williamscales··on Kermit: A typeface for kids
My DNS blocks it as a tracking domain.
williamscales··on US labour watchdog halts Apple cases after group’s lawyer picked for top job
Damn, I never did the math on this. I have always been of the opinion that racism drives a lot of political behavior but this really drives home how close my US is to an even darker racist past.
williamscales··on Mozilla launching “Thundermail” email service to take on Gmail, Microsoft 365
The British Indian Ocean Territories (.io) might go to control of Mauritius. They will be able to decide what to do with the TLD. It could in principle be restricted to residents, or go away entirely.
williamscales··on Unmasking a slow and steady password spray attack
I put up a bare metal server with a public IP for the first time in a long time and I was stunned by how many automated opportunistic attempts it got.

Makes sense, like you say.

williamscales··on Beautiful and Minimalistic Chrome Extension
Arguably the most minimalistic new tab page is a blank one ;)

It does look quite clean for what it is. Cool work!

williamscales··on Italy demands Google poison DNS under strict Piracy Shield law
Indeed this is how it generally works with rentals. GP’s situation can just be reframed as “you get a ticket handed to you for [any small infraction] and leave the country without paying”.
williamscales··on When your last name is Null, nothing works
Archive link of the defunct blog post: https://web.archive.org/web/20100712060406/https://www.paulp...
williamscales··on Leaking the email of any YouTube user for $10k
A long long time ago...in an internet far away...

YouTube used to have DMs so you could do this. I don't remember exactly when it was removed. Probably late aughts.

williamscales··on Married Women Could Be Stopped from Voting Under Save Act
I wrote some stuff musing about this but it didn't make much sense so I'll just leave this quote and article as (hopefully) helpful context for folks.

> It is both a political issue and a practical one, and the idea of federalism is cited as supporting federated (regional) identification. All legislative attempts to create a national identity card have failed due to tenacious opposition from liberal and conservative politicians alike, who regard the national identity card as the mark of a totalitarian society. williamscales··on Brazilian velvet ant is ultrablack
Sadly, my first thought when seeing this article.
williamscales··on Why I hate the index finger (1980)
This tracks with my experience fencing using a pistol grip. The index finger mostly gets in the way and I even injured mine using it too much. The middle finger is the main driver of grip and control.
williamscales··on Chromium uses web search for .internal TLD instead of opening URL
I think that’s part of it. I love URLs (and URIs). Another big part is the predominance of closed social media platforms where the concept of a URL is mostly irrelevant
williamscales··on Chromium uses web search for .internal TLD instead of opening URL
You’d be surprised how many folks don’t turn up their font size when they have bad vision
williamscales··on Chromium uses web search for .internal TLD instead of opening URL
I get the luxury of working with folks in person. In 99% of cases the search produces the right website as the first result. But yeah idk maybe AOL had something going with keywords in some sense in terms of accessibility ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
williamscales··on Chromium uses web search for .internal TLD instead of opening URL
Personally I like them separate. But I’ve been working with folks who are not very computer literate at all and I think I agree with you. If one doesn’t know what a URL is in the first place, how would one distinguish which box to type in?
williamscales··on I Know What Your Password Was Last Summer
In the first case most password managers I’m aware of let you log in online. So I’d just log in and use my hardware token on my keyring for 2FA.
