wildfire··on This is how I git
Odd.

I have had precisely the opposite. Junior Devs using the GUI ( in VSCode ) but breaking things badly.

And then I have to help them out using the command-line

wildfire··on Your Phone Is Your Castle
Sideloading is totally possible. It is just ordinary customers don't have the right to do so.
wildfire··on Your Phone Is Your Castle
Like the server market; high bandwidth, always on and likely running and endpoint for z mobile service.
wildfire··on China suppression of Uighurs meets U.N. definition of genocide, report says
Yes. How long until we can get to 100%?

Hopefully valuing life and allowing people to choose will become just the default.

wildfire··on China suppression of Uighurs meets U.N. definition of genocide, report says
Given that this is the United Nation definition of Genocide, why do you think this is Western in any way?

Remember China had a hand in crafting this definition.

wildfire··on Amazon to pay $1B+ for Zoox
I doubt it, otherwise you would name it.
wildfire··on International Standard Paper Sizes
A metre divided by 10 is 10cm. A foot divided by 10 is 0.1feet = 1 13/64 inches.

Contrived examples are easy.

Those engineers enabled this outcome.

It is perfectly reasonable to ask why they facilitated immoral actions.

There is a code of ethics all computing professionals should use to consider their actions.

wildfire··on What the Heck Is Pyproject.toml?
Yup.

Clearly no one is going to be able to convince you otherwise, so is there much point in you continuing to read this thread?

wildfire··on AWS Ground Station
I actually used this personally (Jan 2019)

You'll get supplied (at least) two SSDs.

With instructions for how to use in both Windows and Linux.

Unfortunately even though it was "GA", it appears that they never really actually tested using it in Linux.

I submitted (and they were merged) a number of documentation bugfixes related to Linux.

Two firmware updates later, one bricked disk, one which failed to verify the copied data -- and 9 months of time all down the drain.

This reason is why I will never use Azure. It wasn't the bugs and device failures that was the problem. Just the sheer work in having to teach Azures' support staff about their own product (after fighting to get them to record the support case -- you normally can't raise one if you don't pay).

Why did I pick Azure for this?

Because (at the time) both GCP and AWS catered for 100Gb+ volumes. And we were (and remain) around 50Gb.

I haven't re-evaluated to see if either GCP or AWS have better options now.

wildfire··on AWS Ground Station
That product looks exactly like AWS Direct Connect

Also, when I go to: https://www.infrastructure.aws/

(annoyingly I can't link to the network) it says 100Gbps of WAN capacity around the AWS global network.

I did a quick search and wasn't able to find what it is for GCP -- do you have a link handy?

wildfire··on Open letter concerning Facebook's proposals to apply end-to-end encryption
> With E2EE enabled he would > not have been identified at > that time.

What is the source for this?

Do you have a link for more context?

wildfire··on Show HN: Local Node.js app to save everything you browse and serve it offline
Do you have a link which might give further information about how the sandboxing that Firefox offers and the one that Chrome offers are different?

I was under the impression that they were very similar.

wildfire··on Citymapper
Like many others, I have used CityMapper extensively in London, Berlin, Paris, Sydney, etc.

With public transport, and using the same data Google Maps has access to, it just gives better results except for walking.

I don't quite understand how the walking component of the routing is always so bad compared to Google Maps.

I routinely end the trip when the walking section is on, and switch to Google Maps because it is so much better than CityMapper.

If they could fix that, they would have a killer app on their hands.

wildfire··on Synchronous Messaging at Mozilla: The Decision
Governance doesn't preclude the organisation which pays for the developers to have them do something else.

Goverance: We should complete the async work before we do X

Pay master: We need X done. Do the async work later.

i.e. the person who is paying the money gets to set the priority.

wildfire··on Google Fires Four Workers, Including Staffer Tied to Protest
> Publicly bad mouthing the > company you work for > is definitely grounds > for termination

Having not read any of the tweets in question, I can not say what the content is about.

However, according to https://www.hg.org/legal-articles/can-you-fire-someone-for-t..., speech about working conditions and union organising is protected.

I suspect none of us armchair lawyers will come up with a simple way to analyse these tweets with a lot of context that isn't available.

wildfire··on Google Fires Four Workers, Including Staffer Tied to Protest
Do you know of any court case testing this?

My contract with a German company, specifically had clauses saying that anything on their systems is something that can inspect and/or look at.

We aren't talking a small company here, but one with multiple large sites; which means multiple large workers councils ( basically a union for a specific company location ).

Remember hiring in Germany has to be approved by a Worker's Council and the company has to pay for the council to receive independent legal advice as well.

wildfire··on exFAT in the Linux kernel
> UEFI standard supports > loading from FAT.

Actually UEFI REQUIRES the bootable partition to be FAT (not not exFAT).

UEFI also requires the executables to be in the COFF format ( instead of the normal ELF one ) too.

wildfire··on exFAT in the Linux kernel
> Eventually they had NO CHOICE > but to evolve or die.

So, really they haven't done anyone any favours then?

Why do you think so many people look upon their acts as something with good intentions?

Just better marketing spin?

wildfire··on exFAT in the Linux kernel
> you're talking about them > investing tens of millions > minimum into the development

Do you have a source for this hyperbole??

wildfire··on exFAT in the Linux kernel
In some cases yes, but the majority of jobs are never formally advertised.

Where do you think MD (Managing Directors), CxOs and other high level people go for jobs?

The majority of them will get their next position through who they know, not a job board.

wildfire··on Aussie ISV buys ads to wake up Google support
Yes very responsive.

I've pointed out a number of errors in their FAQs, some technical and some spelling and grammar related.

They have always acknowledged the issue.

3 months later, the issues still remain. Oh well.

wildfire··on Aussie ISV buys ads to wake up Google support
You get decent response.

There is someone on the line and follow-up emails too.

But actually fixing things is a crap-shoot.

I've had an issue with Google One family accounts for a month now.

I can not invite anyone into my family, so far no solution. Instead they keep throwing free storage at various family members because they can not escalate very much.

wildfire··on Duolingo Built a $700M Company Without Charging Users
Odd. I've paid about £100 so far for a subscription and other gamification things.

I don't regret the money, and believe it was worthwhile. But Duolingo isn't free.

wildfire··on Firefox: The Effect of Ad Blocking on User Engagement with the Web [pdf]
Are you intentionally unaware that they have been doing this ( C.f. webpayments API)?

Or is this work going to be a complete surprise to you?

I know https://wiki.mozilla.org/Firefox/Features/Web_Payments only mentions 2017 but this stuff has been in play since 2015.

wildfire··on Did I just waste 3 years?
Yes.

You are only asking to have people point out possibilities that you didn't.

But in your heart of hearts, you know you did.

That doesn't mean you didn't have fun. I suspect you need to revisit what 'waste' really is for you though.

wildfire··on Russia Sells 80% of Its US Treasuries
Having never heard of goldseek.com, and there being no links (I could perceive) to any authoritative source:

1. Is this actually true? 2. Why should this actually matter?

Aren't reserve banks (or central banks) supposed to hold a basket of currencies and commodities anyway?

wildfire··on Oracle’s Aggressive Sales Tactics Are Backfiring with Customers

When has agressive sales tactics gone well for a company?

wildfire··on Amazon threatens to suspend Signal's AWS account over censorship circumvention
If this would "seriously mess up the stats", then arguably the CDN is doing it wrong.

It should bill on the inner (encrypted) domain and not what is outside.
