wild_pointer··on RTP: One protocol to rule them all?
xkcd 927 anyone?
wild_pointer··on Rust and C++ with Steve Klabnik and Herb Sutter [audio]
Expected a safety fight. The talk didn't deliver :(
wild_pointer··on PEP 760: No more bare excepts
Yes, I was bitten by it in the past. Still, it'd better be a lint, or at least a very very long deprecation period... like, deprecated and removed in Python 4 or something.
wild_pointer··on uBlock Origin CNAME uncloaking now supports filtering by IP address
Well, it does support it now. It supported it before, too :P
wild_pointer··on Rust panics under the hood, and implementing them in .NET
Why does Rust panic under the hood? Brb reading the post to find out!
wild_pointer··on Praise My GitHub Profile
Sorry to roast your project, but the roast one is so much better. Got me in the sensitive spots and mentioned very specific stuff. This one feels like a generic "you have 260 followers, you're awesome". Also, it did some roast anyway - "As for the blank README and bio, don't worry about it! Sometimes, less is more." :)
wild_pointer··on Private Browsing 2.0
That's good progress. How do these features compare to Brave, which has Brave Shields and [copy clean link](https://github.com/brave/brave-browser/wiki/Copy-clean-link)?
wild_pointer··on Circle C++ with memory safety
> circle: rigorous memory safety

> rust: unsafe { println!("{}", *r1); }

Comeon people, if you allow unsafety, you cannot call your language safe. There are safe system languages, but don't lie and call unsafe languages safe. Partial safety is not full safety.

wild_pointer··on Webview: Tiny cross-platform webview library for C/C++
From the readme:

> Internally, some absolutely hideous shenanegans are involved to make this possible!

Yeah, like literally embedding a dll in the header file.

Pretty cool, but seems kinda fragile.

wild_pointer··on Open-Shell: A collection of utilities bringing back classic features to Windows
I prefer Windhawk, especially with the new Windows 11 Start Menu Styler. You get to choose a better layout while keeping the native start menu. Like CSS for the start menu basically.

wild_pointer··on Zig 0.12.0 Release Notes
> Sounds like yet another case of "this should be a warning instead".

The discussion about it is indeed interesting: https://github.com/ziglang/zig/issues/224

e.g.:

> > When debugging/prototyping, it's useful to comment out a line without having to refactor, e.g. > > I think this use case is a strong argument. However, it's up against another strong use case, which is the ability to rely on a set of assumptions when reading the source of a compiling codebase. > [...] > a variable declared with var does have a modification to it

Which is an interesting property.

We'll see how it goes for them.

wild_pointer··on Where do our atoms come from?
"The knowledge that the atoms that comprise life on earth - the atoms that make up the human body, are traceable to the crucibles that cooked light elements into heavy elements in their core under extreme temperatures and pressures. These stars- the high mass ones among them- went unstable in their later years- they collapsed and then exploded- scattering their enriched guts across the galaxy- guts made of carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, and all the fundamental ingredients of life itself. These ingredients become part of gas clouds that condense, collapse, form the next generation of solar systems- stars with orbiting planets. And those planets now have the ingredients for life itself. So that when I look up at the night sky, and I know that yes we are part of this universe, we are in this universe, but perhaps more important than both of those facts is that the universe is in us. When I reflect on that fact, I look up- many people feel small, cause their small and the universe is big. But I feel big because my atoms came from those stars."

curl 8.2.1 in insider since 2023-10-05 (not advocating, just FYI): https://winbindex.m417z.com/?arch=insider&file=curl.exe
wild_pointer··on Rectify11 Improving upon the Windows 11 experience
Both discord links are the same
wild_pointer··on How much would it have cost if GPT-4 had written your code
It's even cheaper to get a monkey to type that code for you. Will probably cost a banana. Chances it will type the code you expect? Similar to GPT-4 for anything remotely non-trivial.
wild_pointer··on DIY Git in Python
I took this tutorial and it vastly improved my git understanding, nicely done in both content and the way it's presented!
wild_pointer··on .zip is now available as a TLD

wild_pointer··on Pigz: Parallel gzip for modern multi-processor, multi-core machines
How does it compare perfomance-wise to Intel ISA-L? https://github.com/intel/isa-l
