whynotmaybe··on Audio tapes reveal mass rule-breaking in Milgram's obedience experiments
In Dan Ariely's book, "predictably irrational", there's a chapter about how everyone cheats a little.

And based on everyone I've met, and on Dan Ariely's own actions (1), I've concluded this one is true.

We all cheat a little from time to time.

Ex : for me, driving a few km/h above the speed limit is "cheating a little"

whynotmaybe··on Canadian man says U.S. border officers made him give DNA sample
> sounds an awful lot like the motivated reasoning that brushes aside these structures in favor of simple authoritarianism.

You know that's a stretch.

Just because I think that no country should meddle in another's affair doesn't mean that I agree with whatever's happening down there.

>A president is still supposed to be subservient to the Constitution. Border guards as well. There was no referendum on getting rid of the Constitution.

The current administration is just the tip of the problem-berg, but if millions of people see it as normal and I see it as a problem, what should we do now ?

whynotmaybe··on Canadian man says U.S. border officers made him give DNA sample
Yes, but as the US decided to put whoever they have in charge now, it's up to them to remove it.

We always complain when Russia or China is meddling in any country's affairs but we should accept it when a Canadian does it in the US because we don't like who's in charge.

Went through the rabbit hole for this and found that China offers to convert countries' debt in USD to CNY with a very low interest. [1]

Just by doing this, Kenya saved 215 millions USD... on a Chinese USD loan. [2]

Anyone talking about "fax security" is another monk of security through obscurity. Phone line can be listened, fax can be hacked[1] and, most of the time, the fax is the copier and everyone in the building has access to it.

20 years ago I worked for a client that had a fax to exchange connector, any mailbox could send a fax from outlook[2] and they had linked fax numbers to group mailbox so that each department had their own fax numbers.

1 : https://blog.checkpoint.com/security/faxploit-hp-printer-fax... 2 : It was always fun to analyze fax sending errors because someone wanted to send a funny video to a fax number.

Not really new. A long time ago I had to wait 2 months to have access to a shared folder on a development server.

Security through eternity I guess ?

whynotmaybe··on GrapheneOS refuses to comply with new age verification laws for operating system
If we go back a few years and analyze the porn magazines that are sold in a gas station, it's not up to the magazine to ensure that the "reader" has the legal age.

So we delegated the responsibility twice, first the gas station attendant must check the age of the buyer and then, the buyer should check the age of any reader.

So now, who's the "gas station attendant" in our situation?

whynotmaybe··on Western carmakers' retreat from electric risks dooming them to irrelevance
How often do you leave the city for more than 200km?

Each time I travel oversea, I take a "public transportation plane", not my private jet.

It's not because an EV doesn't fit for 100% of your requirements, that it doesn't fit for everyone.

No car fits for 100%.

whynotmaybe··on Western carmakers' retreat from electric risks dooming them to irrelevance
Everybody knows it won't fully replace it.

It's impossible to go on a long off-road travel with the EV equivalent of 50L of gas in a jerrycan.

But some are twisting the narrative to say that because of that reason EV will fail.

Millions of people could use an EV in their daily life, just like I can go without a pickup in my daily life and rent one whenever I need one.

whynotmaybe··on Wayland set the Linux Desktop back by 10 years?

whynotmaybe··on Wayland set the Linux Desktop back by 10 years?
I don't know what's the difference between x11, wayland, gnome, kde and all the others.

The fact that people always debate over which one is best is one of the reason why I don't switch to Linux desktop.

Theres always the sane debate of Macos VS Windows VS Linux. That's a good one for me because there are many pros and cons for each of them.

But then, when you try to really look into Linux, it's an unstoppable flow of "systemd=bad", "snap is bad", “only the distro xyz is the real one because it respects principle abc".

Even the emacs VS vim debate seems saner than this.

I know the underlying spirit of Linux is the liberty to choose whatever you want, but this perpetual debate over which is the best only tricks me into believing that whichever distro I'd choose, it will be the wrong one.

Even for my old media server, there are 3 differents Linux mint : Cinnamon, Xfce and MATE.

What am I supposed to do? Spend a few hours to try each one and find the best for my 13 years old i5 with a Nvidia gt440 that's used 3 hours per month?

whynotmaybe··on Java 26 is here
Went from c# to flutter and it was easy.

The new concepts for me were using immutable classes with the keyword "final", and the whole concept of state management in mobile apps because I've mainly done backend.

I've only used kotlin in the android files for flutter but nothing else.

I'm also not totally objective on that because my Java experience is from a long long time ago, my general feeling is that flutter is less bloated than java.

And I don't want to start a culture war on this, because we all know turbo Pascal is the best.

whynotmaybe··on Java 26 is here
I've used Java decades ago (anyone remember servlet?) and I'm glad that I can use flutter for Android development.

Unless the naming convention were written in the 90s and all variable must follow a precise algorithm to be made of only abbreviation and a maximum length of 15.

Or for some, if it contains the value of a column in the db, it must have the same name as the column.

So yeah, instead of "UsualQuantityOrder", you get "UslQtyOrd" or "I_U_Q_O"... And you must maintain the comments to explain what the field is supposed to contain.

It's a kids movie but I put it in the "very strange" kid movie.

Get ready, spoilers ahead, based on the plot explained on wikipedia.

>Patrick gets recruited by an opera singer

Why does he gets recruited ?

Because with his farts he can reach a note that no opera singer can reach. The opera singer "Sir John Osgood" (played by Simon Callow) lip syncs the note and then becomes the Number 1 opera singer in the world.

But, another opera singer "Placido P. Placeedo" (Adam Godley), who was number 1 before, gets jealous and discovers Patrick Smash.

So Placido does what every normal person would do, he gives laxatives to Patrick so that the next time he should play the note it fails because it's another set of note played.

>ultimately gaining revenge on the school bully Damon

Thunderpants, invented by Alan (Rupert Grint), is a pant connected to a filter inside a lunchbox. With this Patrick hasn't anymore problem at school.

https://hero.fandom.com/wiki/Patrick_Smash

If my memory's right, Patrick gains revenge whenever the bully opens the lunch box to steal Patrick's lunch.

>Patrick finds that his condition may be of use to the spacemen in peril

Alan has been hired by a "NASA" to build a new rocket and he included a special thruster that uses Patrick's fart as fuel.

whynotmaybe··on Source code of Swedish e-government services has been leaked
I think it was covered during a discussion about immigrants that are easily rejected - because they're immigrants.

The points was that it added another layer of issues for immigrants because they didn't understand the neighbourhood they "should be living in" with their revenue.

whynotmaybe··on Source code of Swedish e-government services has been leaked
I heard a rumor that some people use this to check their neighbour's revenue and sometimes make snark comments if one of them has a high revenue but lives in a "average revenue" part of town.

They'd say that if you earn a lot, you shouldn't take a cheap housing.

Any truth to that?
