whynotmaybe··on 10 years ago, someone wrote a test for Servo that included an expiry in 2026
`today` is random.
whynotmaybe··on 10 years ago, someone wrote a test for Servo that included an expiry in 2026
Because it should be `today + 1 year + randomInt(1,42) days`.

Always include some randomness in test values.

whynotmaybe··on Claude Opus wrote a Chrome exploit for $2,283
How?

In the 90's most software was closed source but cracks/trainer were always available.

Even for Rayman that had multiple (26?) cd-check during the game.

Security is mainly slowing the attacker because there's a maximum amount of stuff a human can do in 24hours. But now if you can simulate thousands of human attacking a system in different ways, it will crack.

Just like many stores have lock on their doors and, insurance if someone breaks the lock.

I'm guessing data security insurance will become a huge market in the years to come.

whynotmaybe··on Microsoft isn't removing Copilot from Windows 11, it's just renaming it
Well, they heard that we don't like copilot in notepad so they removed "copilot" from notepad.

And right after that they added a brand new feature called tolipoc that will revolutionize the way you analyze your logs or modify your 17 year old cmd file!

Want to create a file with the current date and time? No need to google for it, tolipoc will do it for you!

Must be some Mandela effect but I'm sure that Paint.net was supposed to replace mspaint when it was started.
whynotmaybe··on Old laptops in a colo as low cost servers
I've wanted to do that with an old laptop and send it to be hosted at a friend's house.

The advantage I found with a laptop :

1. Only two cables, power and ethernet. Installation and removal is quick.

2. Comes bundled with keyboard and screen so no need for monitor

3. Usually very low power consumption and low heat.

4. Light, it can be stored anywhere.

So to answer your question, I'm guessing all of the above?

Only if you're a nation with few resources or in emergency situation.

Creativity in the US military as always been associated with a lot of $ for contract with the private sectors.

Yes, many countries are now using cheap drones to destroy targets but I'm not sure the US military has the mentality to adapt to this situation because they're not "really" at war.

How would highly ranked personnel react to the idea of a 400$ drone, cheaper than an AR15, when they usually discuss budgets about aircraft carriers (or a few 100$million F35) ?

I wonder how many potential contractors would add a 0 to the price just to be taken seriously.

Noob sidenote, TIL that you must "defang" ip addresses in security reports so you write it with brackets like 135.136.1[.]133.

This prevent it from being clickable.

I wish for the original solitaire to come back.

I use win95 emulator in the browser to play it.

whynotmaybe··on Microsoft hasn't had a coherent GUI strategy since Petzold
As of today, I only use 2 solutions for Windows GUI :

- windows forms in .net

- flutter

All the rest always presents itself with a sheer aura of "It was a great idea but we couldn't finish it".

Without ever discussing with anyone from MS about it, I think they stopped improving/working on this because of electron.

Any web developer can build a good enough website and a good enough desktop app with electron.

whynotmaybe··on How many products does Microsoft have named 'Copilot'?
Is it in solitaire or minesweeper?

In Québec they solved it by issuing the ticket to the car owner that is considered responsible and it's up to the owner to contest it.

Nobody's considered guilty, it's an administrative ticket.

No points are removed from the owner's driver licence because they can't prove who was driving but the owner still has to pay the ticket.

whynotmaybe··on Solar and batteries can power the world
You can run anything on 90% renewable and anything else for the remaining 10%.

As my house is on hydro-energy and everything is electric, I'm currently on 100% renewable and majors factories around me are the same.

Yes, hydro isn't available everywhere, just like solar or wind isn't, but wherever it's possible, we should have it.

I can save everyone a few Mb of memory now :

1. Check that you really need a SaaS SPA to solve the communication issues between your team members.

2. HTML and css should be enough for 99% of corporate websites.

3. Resize the images on your websites, they're too big.

4. Use teams in the browser, not as stand-alone app.

whynotmaybe··on Oracle slashes 30k jobs
And, their product have worked correctly for decades.

So if you have a lot of money and don't want to take any risk you go the oracle route. It's not the best product today, but you won't have any surprise, except cost, that you can justify because it's oracle.

Which is the same as using a tank to go grocery shopping because you're afraid of an accident on the way. You need everything in house to support a thank, special garage, specifically trained crew, specific fuel...

And it's way harder to drive than a civic.
