whoooooo123··on Liz Truss resigns as UK prime minister
> Front-bench party members now routinely and openly using words like 'scum' and 'detest' to talk about their colleagues on the other side.

No, only one front-bench political party routinely refers to the other as "scum". Stop pretending that both sides do it.

whoooooo123··on Claims AI can boost workplace diversity are ‘spurious and dangerous’
Also, if I want to know how good someone is at playing a musical instrument, I can usually get a good idea from just a few minutes or even seconds of hearing them play. There's no similarly fast way to judge how well someone will perform in a programming job. (Or at least if there was, hiring would be a lot easier.)

Is that a JS-free Wikipedia? Looks fantastic; thanks for sharing.

While we're on the subject, I'm a fan of Nitter[0] as a JS-free Twitter UI. Can anyone recommend any other JS-free frontends to popular apps?

whoooooo123··on Joe Rogan Interviews Steve Jobs
Maybe there's more training data available for Rogan. The guy pumps out hundreds of hours of content a year in which he's recorded discussing every topic under the sun. I can't imagine there's a similar quantity of recordings of Jobs's voice - or of almost anyone's voice for that matter.

Edit: four other people replied in the time it took me to type two sentences. I guess the answer is that obvious.

The war is "between" Russia and Ukraine but the US is funding and arming Ukraine because the US wants to hurt Russia. How is that not the dictionary definition of a "proxy war"?

Swap the US and Russia and replace "Ukraine" with "North Vietnam" and you have a historical conflict which everyone agrees was a proxy war. How is this different?

This is why I read HN: someone starts a discussion about a high-profile tech company, and gets a thoughtful reply from none other than the CEO. Thanks for taking the time.

Biden has been in politics for 52 years. Has he ever, at any point in his long political career, shown any concern whatsoever for the plight of non-violent minor drug offenders until five minutes ago when it became politically expedient for him?

This is a genuine question, I'd love to be proved wrong.

whoooooo123··on Granting Pardon for the Offense of Simple Possession of Marijuana
Fun fact: in some countries it's illegal for citizens to take illegal drugs even if they're abroad in a place where it's legal. E.g. if a Korean smokes weed during a visit to Amsterdam, they can be prosecuted for it upon return to Korea.

Student debt forgiveness is also something that only the legislature can do - Nancy Pelosi admitted this as recently as a year ago. Biden doesn't have the power to forgive student debt by himself, but he's doing it anyway, it's blatantly illegal and no-one cares.
whoooooo123··on Granting Pardon for the Offense of Simple Possession of Marijuana
From a legal point of view, when is marijuana possession a federal offence and when is it a state offence?

Presumably if you're caught with weed in DC then it's federal. But under what circumstances could you be found in possession with marijuana anywhere else and have it be a matter for the federal government, not the state one?

A contact of mine who works for Meta says that this has been coming for a long time and no-one is surprised. They're also rescinding internship offers (now THAT'S shitty) and freezing hiring.

Absurdly, I'm told that the company is still planning on going ahead with booked job interviews, even when they won't be able to make an offer due to the hiring freeze. If you have an interview scheduled with FB I suggest not wasting your time.
