whoiskevin··on Mark Zuckerberg’s Philanthropy Uses L.L.C. For More Control
"Meanwhile, how much are the commenters themselves giving away? Oh, somewhat less than 99%? Yeah."

Terrible statement. If a commenter here makes 100,000 and gives away 99% well they are now extremely poor. If I have billions and give away 99% my life isn't likely to change.

whoiskevin··on The 100-Hour Rule
Awesome. 100 hours of some civil engineering and I will be able to build some small simple bridges.
whoiskevin··on Flexbox Froggy: A game for learning CSS flexbox
Being picky here but when the first paragraph says "Guide this frog to the lilypad on the right" it should probably specify that you are moving all content in the pond. Just seems that it should start with moving the frog as a selector or reword that to be a bit more clear.
whoiskevin··on Robot gets rid of weeds automatically and without herbicides
For as long as I live where a lawn does not require a sprinkler. Think outside the box.
whoiskevin··on America's poorest white town: abandoned by coal, swallowed by drugs
I have to agree. I grew up in KY as well (closer to Louisville) and you don't have to go far outside of Louisville before it looks like this article. We used to do long bike rides (100/150 miles) and the abandoned towns and poor towns we would pass through was startling. It was really hard to ride out on an expensive bike into areas like that and not feel like you were enjoying the beautiful countryside while also ignoring the huge problems that were right in front of you. That is why tourism does not really work to fix these issues. It brings in a little money but not enough compared to what was there previously. Resource extraction is a dead end...it always is and I tend to agree these towns will simply cease to exist.
whoiskevin··on In-N-Out Files Lawsuit Against Food Delivery Startup DoorDash
Yea I lost my focus there. Seriously In and Out is terrible and it just gets me every time that I see this SF chain pushed as good when it really is not.

On the topic I think the quality of food delivered is going to hurt the delivery businesses. Fries are the perfect example where you cannot stick them in a bag and delivery them 30 minutes later and have anything but a soggy mess.

I agree with others that these businesses are not going to scale but may survive in very small places where higher end food can be delivered and the fee is a smaller percentage of the total food bill. Delivering cheap fast food isn't a good business model.

whoiskevin··on In-N-Out Files Lawsuit Against Food Delivery Startup DoorDash
I don't know how DoorDash could make In-N-Out food worse. Seriously their food is not good. I see the trademark angle but the quality? Please they should start with making something worth while.
whoiskevin··on Getting rid of free office snacks doesn't come cheap
"For the typical startup I'd really question the need for 1TB SSDs" And that is why you fail. Your already second guessing my needs. I have a 1TB SSD because the 500 was filled. Don't guess. Ask and then supply and don't make me buy it myself.
whoiskevin··on Amazon opens first bricks-and-mortar bookstore
Maybe the library but the book store...well not if you are then taking home only what you purchase from Amazon instead of the place you just comfortably browsed inventory. I find it hard to understand the logic of using a place of business in order to take advantage and not purchase from them. People justify it in many ways but none of those justifications stands up to examination.
whoiskevin··on Why Software Outsourcing Doesn't Work Anymore
Nice!
whoiskevin··on How Can We Achieve Age Diversity in Silicon Valley?
And there it is. The first inexperienced thing you could say. Assuming all work in your little world is on github.
whoiskevin··on Off the Grid, but Still Online
Tim works full-time and lives full time from their RV. Check out the home page of the site and you will get the full story: http://www.watsonswander.com/
whoiskevin··on More than 10k problems fixed through 'Improve Detroit' app
The App is just SeeClickFix. What is really impressive is that they are fixing things. I hope they can keep up the pace.
whoiskevin··on Clipboard.js: Modern Copy to Clipboard
I agree. Also maybe someone with great UI skills can remember to set a proper damn tab order.
whoiskevin··on How a two-day sprint moved an agency twenty years forward
Replace "government" with "Apple", "HP", "Google", "Cisco", or "other big company" and it still works.

Process is the biggest issue not people.

whoiskevin··on America’s Most Unlikely Energy Project Is Rising from a Louisiana Bayou
New pipelines are not the answer and never have been. Allowing companies to turn the landscape into a waste land of pipelines is not some answer. I think a lot more people would get educated about pipelines if we started proposing running them through San Francisco and New York and I for one would like to see that happen since new pipelines are supposedly such a great economic boost.
whoiskevin··on Apple Unveils a More Powerful Apple TV
Why do you leave your TV on in the middle of the night?
whoiskevin··on Report: U.S. average daily mobile game time drops over 30% in a year
why? Seriously why. Like watching paint dry.
whoiskevin··on Entrepreneurs don’t have a gene for risk – they come from families with money
Hmmm if your grandfather was successful in some significant way then your father benefited from that security which is exactly what the article is about. So claiming both were those exceptions is a bold claim indeed.
whoiskevin··on Entrepreneurs don’t have a gene for risk – they come from families with money
This is just common sense but amazingly this bit of common sense is ignored in the valley. Probably because too many want to believe in the dream that the successful were "just smart enough" or "just risky enough" when the majority were simply able to gamble with minimal risk.
whoiskevin··on Documents confirm Apple is building self-driving car
Why should I pay to insure a self driving car? I'm not driving it so maybe I want personal protection but seriously the insurance changes entirely. If a self driving car has to be insured by me then I want to control it not just assume it works and I'll pay the insurance when it doesn't.
whoiskevin··on Boffins reveal password-killer 0days for iOS and OS X
Easy. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=GQb_Q8WRL_g
whoiskevin··on ADP intentionally broke its Zenefits integration
I have to put the blame on Zenefits here. You cannot offer something to a customer that depends on integration with a competitor. Shame on you. No I don't support ADP and am not a fan but basic business dictates that you should not even offer this service if it depends on integration with a competitor.
whoiskevin··on RocketChat: Slack-like online chat, built with Meteor
I think chat apps are the new todo list app. Everyone is building one and frankly they are all boring and don't offer anything significant.
whoiskevin··on Startup Aims to Make Silicon Valley an Actual Meritocracy
So I'll only be considered a good programmer if I work on github? Way to replace one broken method with another equally limited view of candidates.
whoiskevin··on Apple design guru Jony Ive promoted
I have to agree. Even say 30 years of solid work would be over 150 patents a year. With 365 days in a year that is a patent every 2 1/2 days. I'd call bull on that being anything but feedback/sign your name. Kind of points to the patent issues we face.
whoiskevin··on Show HN: Visa Explorer – Salaries, lawyers, companies of all H-1B in the USA
Really not that much when you take out the taxes, food and housing premium of the area. That is what should floor you as well
whoiskevin··on Ask HN: How do you use Reddit daily?
I don't. Facebook also gone. Got work to do. Maybe when I retire.
whoiskevin··on Ask HN: Programmers Above 50, Is It Possible to Have a Career Past Your 50s?
And that is why you fail. See even in IT an older person's understanding of the depth of new technologies (seen that) is the hidden value that you missed. Doctors have to keep learning as well but the older doctor has seen the ups and downs of every condition just like an older programmer has already seen the pieces that make up the glorified new technology. As for working longer hours...that is a total sign of failure. If you have to always work extra hours your just not as good.
whoiskevin··on What Makes People Collect Things?
"People are more likely to build a collection of something once they possess two of them."

Really? Did they spend a lot of time studying that?
