whoisjohnkid··on iPhone 13 to support LEO satellite communication
good to see I wasn’t the only one thinking along these lines from reading the title alone. thought it was another privacy issue coming to light.
whoisjohnkid··on NSA Mobile Device Best Practices
a lot of exploits deliberately avoid persistence as an extra layer of protection from detection. Since most folks rarely restart their phones these bugs can live on your phone until a restart. So by restarting your phone on a weekly basis you are potentially wiping out memory only infections.
whoisjohnkid··on BTC Hashrate dropped another 27% down ~62% form peak now at 2019 levels
correct. When I mentioned more folks mining again I meant more folks mining because it’s easier and of course whenever the dislocated Chinese miners get their operations back up again in another location.

Yes. In 4 days the difficulty will adjust and it will be 20+% easier to mine a coin. As more people start back mining difficulty will adjust again
whoisjohnkid··on Binance banned from doing business in UK
If you use multiple services each with a piece of Shamir’s secret you are more protected. You can get more sophisticated with this if you want e.g each piece can be xored or encrypted with a value only that person would know e.g their birthday or their fav food.

Being your own secure bank isn’t a trivial task. Hopefully this can get easier in the future

you can use multi sig wallets. Which are synonymous to Shamir’s Secret Sharing Algo; tldr you can generate say 5 keys and you need 3 of the 5 to unlock.

As for if you die … you could use one of those services that will send an email out to your significant others if you don’t log in for X amount of time.

whoisjohnkid··on Ask HN: Best “I brought down production” story?
heard a few years back, someone accidentally deleted everything across all AWS accounts at our company; had to reach out to AWS and they helped recover everything. Took 6-12 hours to recover
whoisjohnkid··on Positive Psychology Goes to War
Thank you! Always appreciate links like these
whoisjohnkid··on Berkshire: Bitcoin is ‘contrary to the interest of civilization.’
criminals tend to prefer privacy coins like monero over bitcoin because of how easy it is to track bitcoin transfers. If any of their bitcoin transfers ever touches a KYC wallet they are screwed; until taproot gets activated for bitcoin it requires a ton of work to truly stay anonymous
whoisjohnkid··on Ask HN: How are you hedging against inflation?
real estate; you can buy out right and property value will rise with inflation. Or you can get a fixed mortgage which means you will owe less if inflation kicks in.

Alternatively owning regular assets should help; stocks, gold, crypto, art, etc

whoisjohnkid··on Reasons to upgrade from Java 8
oh I agree for sure; the title is just a bit confusing as is
whoisjohnkid··on Reasons to upgrade from Java 8
Title should be changed to “You can’t afford to continue running Java 8”
whoisjohnkid··on Reasons to upgrade from Java 8
agreed; when I started reading this I thought they were saying if you are running anything below Java 8 it’s faster

Wish more folks saw this lecture about never talking to the police:

whoisjohnkid··on GitHub was down
good point; I think they might be deploying big features on fridays? as of late I've noticed most of the issues I have seen happen on Fridays.
whoisjohnkid··on Local PDF Tools – Powered by WebAssembly
Definitely
whoisjohnkid··on Giving Ada a Chance
You know you’re deep into crypto when you read title and think this is talking about cardano
whoisjohnkid··on WebAssembly
I personally use it to simplify and synchronize encryption logic between client side and server side; makes things a breeze especially if you don’t want to mess with Javascript’s crypto APIs.
whoisjohnkid··on Coinbase S-1
keep in mind bear market could be hovering around 100-200k after this cycle tops. tough to time the market unless you have a ton of experience in the field.
whoisjohnkid··on AWS announces forks of Elasticsearch and Kibana
Just have to say your analogy is amazing, lol made my day; thanks!
whoisjohnkid··on Bitcoincore.org removes Satoshi's whitepaper from website after threats from CSW
There’s definitely multiple ways to make money as an institution and yeah this is a possibility as well.
whoisjohnkid··on Bitcoincore.org removes Satoshi's whitepaper from website after threats from CSW
no way to tell for sure, but the stock to flow model has been pretty accurate over the years and it projects around $90k+ by year end ... institutions like PayPal are buying directly from miners, others are applying with SEC to buy BTC for their funds ... price looks shaky, but the big players seem confident in the fundamentals

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

whoisjohnkid··on REST Servers in Go: Part 1 – standard library
Have you looked into goa design[1]? You define your services with a contract via their DSL and it generates all code for you as well; has some nice validation options out of the box. - similar to grpc gateway you just need to conform to the generated code’s service interface.

I believe it supports, http, websocket and grpc.

whoisjohnkid··on I’ve changed my mind on Bitcoin
It fluctuates drastically over time with a bias to the upside as time goes on. And I agree due to the fluctuations it really isn’t a currency but a store of value... assuming it never gets hacked or considered illegal by all countries lol.
whoisjohnkid··on I’ve changed my mind on Bitcoin
I highly recommend the book The Bitcoin Standard it dives into this question in depth.

Gist is Bitcoin was the first to market, has the biggest decentralized network, has been around the longest, hasn’t been hacked, has no known owner with any vested interests.

All other cryptos are pretty much piggy backing off of Bitcoin’s discoveries for fun or profit ... or trying to make it better.

whoisjohnkid··on Superintelligence cannot be contained: Lessons from Computability Theory
couldn’t we contain it by having it on an air gapped system? Seems like a lot of work to properly implement in practice though; e.g if updates aren’t handled correctly could be another escape vector.
whoisjohnkid··on Amazon, Apple and Google Cut Off Parler
Build app on some sort of decentralized blockchain ... though it might be a hurdle to get the average person to use it
whoisjohnkid··on How to Make Your Code Reviewer Fall in Love with You
Love the concept of reviewing your own code first. I’ve been doing that for the longest now and usually find something I missed when reviewing my own code. I think I have taken this for granted and assumed everyone does this.
whoisjohnkid··on Amazon EC2 Mac Instances
Huh, great question; I’m curious about this myself. If it works that way then it would def be a lot less pricey.
whoisjohnkid··on Krebsonsecurity.com has an expired SSL certificate
That would open a new vector of attack where an attacker would simply have to compromise any of your previous certs; not necessarily an easy feat but still a new vector
