whitemary··on SanDisk Extreme SSDs keep abruptly failing–firmware fix for only some promised
The "high end" PC parts market comprises such a horrendous pit of garbage.

The only way to know if anything even works to begin with is to read all (poorly written) manuals front to back taking notes, then procure the rest of the parts and rigorously test them yourself within all of their 30 day return windows. And even then you're virtually guaranteed to miss some glaring issue.

Just last week, an obscure forum post from someone who already went through the tech support/RMA gamut saved me from wasting a month + $5K on a build with a motherboard that doesn't support sleep mode, which the manufacturer ASRock doesn't mention anywhere.

whitemary··on Everything you think you know about homelessness is wrong
Such opinions only come from out of touch rich people. They don't come from people whose minds can be changed about them with a reasonable effort. It's simply not worth even trying. These people are extremely rare anyhow, except for on venture capital forums like this one.
whitemary··on Everything you think you know about homelessness is wrong
> I dont belive housing costs really have much to do with it.

I find it difficult to believe that a conscious human being wrote this, and much less actually believes it. I frankly think you're just completely full of shit.

whitemary··on Show HN: YouTube Full Text Search – Search all of a channel from the commandline
It works as good as Windows search, no better
whitemary··on Show HN: YouTube Full Text Search – Search all of a channel from the commandline
YouTube profits from people scrubbing videos. Why on Earth would they want to offer full text search instead?
whitemary··on Ask HN: Will AI result in mass silo-ing of new knowledge?
This is the first time I have come across another person who actually gets the true meaning that AI will have in the long run.

AI will exhibit to humanity its true social basis, and upend the fundamental ways we relate to each other. Intellectual Property will be exposed for the fraud that it is, and the concept of owning or profiting from efforts which stand on the shoulders of our neighbors and ancestors will become untenable. It will take a few generations, but this is inevitable.

whitemary··on With new trade deal, Big Tech wants to be above the law
Suggesting that so-called "corporate capture" is a new or recent phenomenon is incredibly ahistorical. This sort of nonsense could only persist in a nation that knows absolutely nothing of its own history.
whitemary··on Writing Is My Main Freedom. One Day My Work Disappeared (2021)
so-called "non-profit"
whitemary··on Writing Is My Main Freedom. One Day My Work Disappeared (2021)
> The system is working as intended.

Wrong. The intentions of the ruling class are not to oppress others but merely to protect their own interests, which is a far more difficult matter to confront.

The fundamental basis of capitalism, being the state's violent protection of the right to accumulate capital, defines the predominant motives of oppression. Members of the ruling class have little choice but to expand their personal power and control, lest they lose it all. This tendency alone results in the private prison industrial complex and erodes citizen rights.

whitemary··on Sam Altman isn’t the answer to regulating artificial intelligence
This sounds like the answer I was looking for. Thank you!
whitemary··on Apple’s new headset meets reality
this archive.org link is so buried in ads on Firefox iOS that it's completely unusable. I can't even zoom to get the text into frame.
whitemary··on YouTube on TVs getting unskippable 30-second and pause screen ads
Exactly. This sounds like Hell.
whitemary··on Sam Altman isn’t the answer to regulating artificial intelligence
How could AI practically be regulated? Would this be the first illegal algorithm?
whitemary··on BratGPT: The evil older sibling of ChatGPT
This made my day.
whitemary··on Consumer Credit and the Removal of Medical Collections from Credit Reports
>How else should a bank determine if you are likely to repay a loan?

Not this way, or not at all for all anyone else should care. Banks are paid interest for taking a risk, so let them take the risk. No other country on Earth has credit scores like the US, and they don't want them because credit scores are disgusting, inhumane.

whitemary··on Coastal Cities Priced Out Low-Wage Workers. Now College Graduates Are Leaving
because less immigrants are coming to the US now, because our labor situation is worse than many 3rd world countries for low wage workers
whitemary··on I don't have ADHD, but three private clinics say I do, and offered me medication
I recently learned almost all of my coworkers are on ADHD medication and I'm hardly surprised because my workplace is extremely competitive. I have since started taking Adderall myself and I have no shame in doing so because it's the only way I can meet expectations.
whitemary··on Rising number of lithium battery incidents on airplanes worry crew
A good example of the future we have to look forward to
whitemary··on The 1% of the population accountable for 63 % of all violent crime convictions (2013)
It's not racism and calling it that does a disservice to the issues of actual racism. Also, nobody says that. Police will always use correlation to predict criminality. You will never change that, but we can change the reason for the statistical correlation: poverty.

Male immigration is too profitable, so nobody with a voice would want to curb it.

whitemary··on Moving from Blame to Accountability (2017)
Are you joking? In your example, the responsible party is the boss, not "environment and culture."
whitemary··on Instead of your Life's Purpose (2021)
See: they weren't made famous,

History is written by the victors, which says nothing of its accuracy.

whitemary··on Instead of your Life's Purpose (2021)
Before employment, there was only social roles. In other words, they should absolutely be conflated. It is absurd and foolhardy to attempt separating them.
whitemary··on Instead of your Life's Purpose (2021)
Nonsense. One's life meaning is traditionally simply their social role. The reason people lack meaning now is that we started determining our social roles by way of market whims, which means our roles are temporary at best and imaginary at worst. It also creates a market for braindead individualist philosophizing to explain why everyone feels so lonely and lost. Sterile precarity is the problem, not the solution.
whitemary··on Three Companies Impersonated Millions to Influence Internet Policy
"Stop" should be past tense and you forgot the quotation marks around "democracy"
whitemary··on Three Companies Impersonated Millions to Influence Internet Policy
Well, those are the rules. That's how capitalism works.

The addiction is a side effect of a society built on exploitation. In other words, capitalism is literally the problem.

> Outlaw the practice of trying to influence people by marketing?

If and when that is an option, yes definitely. What are we waiting for? And how is this even up for discussion?
