whit537··on The End of Gratipay
Thanks for contributing and hanging around, and for the kind words and for using Gratipay to donate!
whit537··on The End of Gratipay
And THANK YOU to all of you who believed in Gratipay enough to freely give and receive $1.1 million over the past five years—all of the companies (MaxCDN, andyet, Stripe, Balanced, Digital Ocean, COS, Khan Academy, Klarna, Heroku, Crate.io, etc., etc.), the individuals (chrisdev, ncoghlan, adambrault, bruceadams, campadrenalin, jedgar, rdegges, therabidbanana, etc., etc. etc.), the open source projects and programmers (alexpott, DrupalCoreTeam, jmervine, bundler, jeresig, substack, zzzeek, bbatsov, mitsuhiko, kennethreitz, ericholscher/RtD, etc., etc.), and, yes, even the provocateurs (it's not your fault we didn't manage our community well).

Thanks for giving us a shot. Sorry it didn't work out. Best of luck!

And thanks to timothyfcook jeffspies calvinhp & kapilt for subsidizing my Gratipay habit these past few years w/ contract work! ;)
whit537··on The End of Gratipay
Deep breath, man. I've finally reached a place where I can let others tell their side of that story without feeling threatened by it. I worked hard to get to this point! Don't you go internalizing bad feelings on my behalf! :)
whit537··on The End of Gratipay
Thanks to all our translators!
whit537··on The End of Gratipay
Okay, now tell me who I forgot (I"M SORRY!!!!)! :D
whit537··on The End of Gratipay
Thanks for the kind words! I won't pretend I didn't put a lot of work into Gratipay over the years, but the reality is that so did a lot of other people. The most meaningful part about Gratipay for me is and has been the community building it. Gosh, I want to start naming names but then I'll forget someone. Aww, heck ...

Thank you clone1018, co-owner of Gratipay, LLC! Thank you mattbk, jessa, rohitpaulk! Thank you edoverflow and the whole (new) security team! Thank you dmk246 and kaguillera! Thank you Changaco and zwn and chrisdev and rummik and seanlinsley and bruceadams and duckinator and colindean everyone else from the Gittip days! Thank you techtonik and aandis and rorepo and wyze and oakes and joonas and patcon! Thank you nobodxdobon and shurcooL and dowski and tshepang!

Thanks for giving us a shot, Sir_Cmpwn! Sorry it didn't work out. Glad you're finding some success ... here's to more! :^)
whit537··on The End of Gratipay
You're a dork, clone1018. You're making me tear up over here! :~)

xoxo

whit537··on The End of Gratipay
Changaco is awesome. We met in person for the first time last year (it was post-fork) and it was a great time.
whit537··on The End of Gratipay
Thanks, kzisme! Was good to have you around while it lasted, maybe some day we'll get to meet in person! Cheers! :^)

Thanks for the send-off, everyone. Feels right somehow to hit the HN homepage one more time before putting Gratipay to bed. So many lessons learned, already scheming about Next Time™.

See you down the line! :D

whit537··on We’ve Raised $60M in New Funding
> only getting enough

That's because total volume is so low. Back when it mattered we were seeing 5% of volume as income to Gratipay, comparable to Patreon, etc.

whit537··on Open Source Captures 0.02% of the Value It Creates
Invent something besides free software, you mean?

I think it can be sustainable if we can change the culture in tech so that it's normal to support open source. There are 20M programmers in the world. If 10% of us each had a budget of $1,000 from our employers to spend on open source each year, that would be $2B/yr for the open source community--equivalent to another Red Hat.

whit537··on Ask HN: Making money from a JavaScript library?
We recently integrated npm into Gratipay so companies can pay for their package.json:

https://gratipay.news/integrating-npm-39333109419d https://gratipay.news/pay-for-your-package-json-cb07341445ca

If you claim your npm packages on Gratipay then you'll be ready as we start bringing companies online to pay:

We're still here! Check https://gratipay.news/ for what we've been up to. :-)
whit537··on Open-source Funding and Support Questionnaire
It sounds like you've mostly tried to pay for new development on projects? As opposed to remunerating for existing product? Does that sound right?
whit537··on Open-source Funding and Support Questionnaire
Fwiw, I've copied your comments over to https://github.com/gratipay/inside.gratipay.com/issues/987#i....
whit537··on Open-source Funding and Support Questionnaire
P.S. Gittip and Gratipay are the same thing. :-)

Yeah! Are you going to release this survey data, @froztbyte?
whit537··on Open-source Funding and Support Questionnaire
Who are you, @froztbyte? Wanna be part of https://sustainoss.org/? :-)

> people will never track down all the OSS projects they depend on and figure what would be a reasonable donation to give them. Too much agency is required of the user to achieve meaningful adoption.

Yes! This gets at the B2B question mentioned elsewhere on this thread. At Gratipay, we're working on integrating package managers to help with aggregation. We've already loaded up all npm packages with stubbed out pages like:

https://gratipay.com/on/npm/express/

Now we're working on adding the ability for package maintainers to easily claim their packages on Gratipay, and then companies can upload a package.json or something and give a chunk of money to their entire dependency chain. Happening here:

https://github.com/gratipay/gratipay.com/pull/4305

whit537··on Looking for Work After 25 Years of Octave
Yes! This is basically what we've concluded at Gratipay (née Gittip). Existing crowdfunding solutions are consumer-grade, and open source needs business-grade crowdfunding, as it were. We're working on it! :)
whit537··on Ask HN: Patreon for open source?
There's also https://opencollective.com/ https://github.com/OpenCollective/OpenCollective (JavaScript).
whit537··on Show HN: Pythonpy – the swiss army knife of the command line
How about the Gittip badges from http://shields.io/?
whit537··on I Resent You – An Open Letter to Shanley Kane
I'm only going to make one comment on this thread:

If you use this thread to make disparaging comments about Shanley, you're missing the point and you're doing it wrong. Go look at how respectfully I tried to treat Shanley when she gave me tons of crap, and then go do the same thing. Shanley's abuse does not make your abuse okay.

Let's all be kind to each other! :D

whit537··on Gittip, Year Two
Hadn't heard of Wikimedia's FDAs, sounds awesome! Do you have a link for more info?
