whelp_24··on Google lays off entire team while they are testifying to the city council
This argument is not one that union advocates would make. Indeed, the separation of blue collar and white collar work is a problem that gets in the way of goals of union advocates.

There may not be guns pointed at programmers, but there are long hours expectations. The perks you're talking about tech workers being pampered with are there to keep workers there longer. The land wealthy companies have been buying to get cheap housing for employees echo company towns but legal.

I recommend reading books like "Brave New World" to highlight how being 'pampered' doesn't mean you're not in a distopia.

In any case, you don't have to like unions, just understand that tech isn't an exception.

whelp_24··on Elon Musk sues Sam Altman, Greg Brockman, and OpenAI [pdf]
Nuclear weapons can definitely be replicated. The U.S. and allies aggressively control the hard to get materials and actively sabotage programs that work on it.

And the countries that want nukes have some anyway, even if they are not as good.

whelp_24··on Toyota was right about hybrid cars
I have had a Volkswagen, it certainly didn't take a day at the dealer. And most of the wait time was other customers ahead of me.
whelp_24··on US Used AI to Help Find Middle East Targets for Airstrikes
We have AI that can and has produced new mathematics. I don't understand what you think AI is. Machine learning enables computers to make decisions about things without explicit programing, and it is done by learning from data. It is a sort of intelligence, if not to the degree that we want (yet).
whelp_24··on US Used AI to Help Find Middle East Targets for Airstrikes
The term you are looking for is AGI, never heard of "true ai". And if machine learning failed, why are we using so much it in everyday life?
whelp_24··on US Military pulls the trigger, uses AI to target air strikes
If the ai can get hotdog wrong sometimes, shouldn't you be extremely concerned that the military is using to kill people and destroy things. I feel like "hospital or not" is a much more dangerous game.
whelp_24··on US Military pulls the trigger, uses AI to target air strikes
Machine Learning is a type of ai.

>If the military had said "statistical inference using modern Big Data methods"

If this is what I saw the military use I would be upset at the blatant attempt at being misleading. In my mind I would convert it back to AI. It's equivalent to saying "I didn't drive drunk, I got here using carnot-like cycles after injesting social communication enhancing drugs".

whelp_24··on Why time seems to pass faster as we age
Defeat yourself and you won't need time to do it for you. Maybe there is a hard limit, maybe you've hit a false peak, a local maxima. If you've hit a plateau, try something else, you probably only hit the limit of your current methods.
whelp_24··on What do we get wrong about the Byzantine Empire?
You don't really understand the ship of Theseus if you think that. Replacing with different things not just identical pieces is part of the question.
whelp_24··on Show HN: Real-time image generation with SDXL Lightning
That's a strange question. Why is nudity something that an image generator shouldn't be able to create? Are genitals a fiction that should never ve present in human art?
whelp_24··on Wakanda isn't an ideal utopia for Africa
The argument is that 1. Natural resources don't matter 2. Capitalism is the only way nations become properous.

I feel like both are demonstrably false.

whelp_24··on Meta's chief AI researcher says OpenAI's "world simulator" Sora is a dead end
You haven't once ingested anything but past information. Unless you're clairvoyant?
whelp_24··on Meta's chief AI researcher says OpenAI's "world simulator" Sora is a dead end
A model is by definition "a playground pretend version". We can't know the real physics, it is a philosophical question if they even exist, that doesn't mean you can't make an approximate version, ie simulation
whelp_24··on San Francisco reverses 'equitable' ban on middle school algebra
With this explanation, you've inadvertently convinced me of the op. Being able to get to the "x = number" is the whole point of algebra. More often, students find the difficulty in trying to do arithmetic on things that can't be(what's x +y? it isn't xy and it isn't some new letter).

Doing this way means that you've actually understood algebra, and honestly, the only step of memorization is the substraction itself.

Whether you pull out the calculator at 2 +3, or (23449)/(!6 + root(34/5) ) is sorta irrelevant.

whelp_24··on High-end gaming PCs banned in 6 US states, energy bill limits sales (2021)
If only this article didn't have random completely unrelated sentences thrown in. I am sure they are violating some ad agreements or they have been hacked
whelp_24··on 2024 Kawasaki Ninja 7 hybrid motorcycle first ride review
The gas mileage isn't actually higher than a regular motorcycle (*well some yeah but not by much). It seems mostly useful as a demonstration of the tech.
whelp_24··on Anti-abortion group's studies retracted before Supreme Court mifepristone case
Arstechinca linked (https://retractionwatch.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/23.11...) the authors rebuttal but didn't elaborate beyond it. I did read it and i am inclined to believe it really is the press of being used in a Supreme Court case rather than the papers' methods. Can someone with more expertise tell me if the rebuttal is bogus?
whelp_24··on Yandex to divest its Russia-based businesses
I didn't hear about yandex until last year, and it was probably from this website, and only as an option for duckduckgo to use use for image search.
whelp_24··on Court decision barring Chinese student sends message about espionage risk
Can someone perhaps shed some light on what the risk is? Is there a gun that can be made with microfluidics?
whelp_24··on Fewer people are buying electric cars in the US
This is before considering that the gas car is at least 10k cheaper and probably closer to 20 to 30k.
whelp_24··on Fewer people are buying electric cars in the US
I mean it really depends. There are probably some circumstances where it's cheaper. But I think it's not a forgone conclusion. Renting costs money, and you'll need gas for it too. Motortrends estimates 1300 to 2000 a year in fuel for an Accord. And 400-1200 for electricity in a tesla model 3 (charging at home not a supercharger). I can easily imagine eating up the savings in one or two rental trips, and that's certainly less convenient.
whelp_24··on Fewer people are buying electric cars in the US
Renting a car is expensive, especially when you have a car already. That you are paying full price for.
whelp_24··on Amazon Prime Video starts showing ads in January unless you pay $2.99/month xtra
Do you not see the problem? "I paid for an electric car but i still have to add gas sometimes". "I paid for a combo but they didn't give me my fries".

You paid extra for something they haven't provided

whelp_24··on GTA 5 source code leaks online
"IP" is a collection of various laws and contracts used to keep exclusivity, it doesn't exist on its own. No law mentions IP. I am not sure the case is a firm as you say it is. Especially since he didn't sign anything.

whelp_24··on Laion Took Down Its Datasets After Discovery of Child Sexual Abuse Material
I don't think that's possible.
whelp_24··on Laion Took Down Its Datasets After Discovery of Child Sexual Abuse Material
I think this kinda shows that you don't really understand the problem. If you had a human sitdown and review each image, there still would be images that get through. Even if you told him to err heavily on the false positive side.
whelp_24··on Why I'm leaning into Google services
That short blog post was still a long way to write it's easier. But we already knew that it's easy.
whelp_24··on Facebook Is Being Overrun with Stolen, AI-Gen Images That People Think Are Real
I don't understand what this has to do with my comment.

Also, ai art has gotten past uncanny valley in a lot of cases, that's why there is concern it's possible to confuse with real images.
