whatupmd··on Facebook says it will act against 'information operations' using false accounts
FB, Twitter and other social sites are under market pressures to maintain/increase user base. At the same time they must justify to skeptical customers/investors that the numbers they publish are legitimate somehow. So, they must adopt a token effort to to combat this, but really it is in their best interest to allow masquerading so long as it is sophisticated enough to not be to obvious.
whatupmd··on Tmux and Vim – better together
I like using :r ! <command> for running terminal commands.

What I liked the most about your article is that 'further reading' section at the bottom!

whatupmd··on Steve Ballmer serves up a data trove about government spending in the US
A step in the right direction, to say the least.
whatupmd··on Rentberry's rental auction site expands in US
A site like this does not get off the ground in the U.K. without the cooperation of the letting agencies. The primary web-site for finding rentals in London is rightmove.co.uk and zoopla which are both owned by the letting agencies.

Of course they want tenants to bid against each other to try to extract the maximum price for properties.

whatupmd··on Wall Street's WhatsApp Secret: Illegal Texting Is Out of Control
You are right that financial crimes are a big deal. However the solution to criminality is not to create a surveillance state.
whatupmd··on The House just voted to wipe out the FCC’s landmark Internet privacy protections
Because this is not an individual but rather shill for ISP trying to push a narrative.

ISPs should be classified as modern utilities. They are trying to be the infrastructure provider while being regulated like the business' that consume the infrastructure. But they don't want to be classified as such because of the burden of regulations this would inherit.

I've yet to meet someone in life that thinks that their internet provider should be able to sell all information about their activities (while charging for the service).

whatupmd··on Differences between San Francisco and London (2014)
This article is 2 years old and it shows. Comparing post-brexit London to San Francisco falls flat very quickly. Living in London is not living in Europe.
whatupmd··on The Mark Zuckerberg Manifesto Is a Blueprint for Destroying Journalism
Watch an NPR or PBS newscast once in awhile. Seems pretty balanced to me.
whatupmd··on Getting started with vim
Thank you for writing this great summary. Just last week I was was trying to compile such a list as a 'novice' user and this has everything I had bookmarked and much more.

My focus was on portability, I switch systems alot, I don't know how practical carrying all these plugins around is but have not given vundle a try yet.

I have to say that working with VIM feels like a weekly/monthly epiphany's. I will discover something new that can be incorporated into my workflow and can't believe what I'd been missing all along.

whatupmd··on Brilliant Jerks Cost More Than They Are Worth
This has been my experience as well, if the manager does not stay on top of it the person is toxic. With sufficient incentives, they can be managed to lift up the team.
whatupmd··on Linux Performance
This site is a great resource and I hope Brendan keeps posting amazing content.
whatupmd··on Employees are happier when led by people with deep expertise
The study is about employee happiness, not about company success.
whatupmd··on Introduction to strace
It looks like this was written Jan. 2014. Your post is a few months later.

The content on your site is great and personally I really appreciate it. Thanks for adding some context here.

whatupmd··on FCC Vote Means Internet Providers Need Permission to Share Your Data
B2B and B2G are a whole different ball-game. In B2B scenario they are exposed to class-action lawsuit for bad-behavior or government fine. In B2G scenario really only thing individual citizen can do is take it to the supreme court.
whatupmd··on Google Compute Engine Incident #16015
They switched to openflow on internal networks for this reason, deterministic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FaAZAII2x0w

External network is BGP though and sounds like they didn't detect it until user reports hit. They can't predict the problem and there detection isn't working well either.
