whatthesmack··on Types of propaganda, propaganda techniques, and propaganda strategies (2017)
It's harder since they've all gone back and stealth-edited their articles.

Here's one example from PaulG: https://twitter.com/paulg/status/1396769717805780994

whatthesmack··on Woke at Work: Why tech firms are trying to run away from politics and failing
Great way to shutdown an argument without contributing anything. Shame someone for not thinking like you do.

I feel like I am the victim if I'm the person considered to be "in the wrong" because I won't use this new language other people are creating and recreating all the time. I didn't have to worry about compelled speech like that 10 years ago.

whatthesmack··on More Scientists Urge Broad Inquiry into Coronavirus Origins
Not sure what your point is. The source for SARS and MERS were found within months. We're over a year into this with no clue. Based on the current circumstances' inconsistencies with historical circumstances, this appears to be something different.
whatthesmack··on Instagram, Twitter blame glitches for deleting Palestinian posts
> However a 2-3 hours bus trip to get to the University (4-5 h/day), when normally it'd been 20? minutes by train (on a railroad that hasn't yet been built), doesn't make Israel and the checkpoints popular.

How else do you propose they quell the proliferation of arms that they know will eventually be fired into populated areas of Israel out of pure hatred, killing innocent civilians? They certainly don't run checkpoints because they're fun.

whatthesmack··on Instagram, Twitter blame glitches for deleting Palestinian posts
No, they just reinterpreted their policies to achieve the desired outcome (ie, permaban of said politician). It's amazing how flexible their policies are depending on who the subject is.
whatthesmack··on Facebook's Trump ban upheld by Oversight Board, for now
Maybe they were referring to the other politicians that have actually made calls to violence, like Maxine Waters, and have not experienced any consequences for their actions.
whatthesmack··on Court: ‘ghost gun’ plans can be posted online without State Department approval
Exactly. "Ghost gun" is a political term used for political purposes. Making guns at home is legal in the US. It just has to be detectable in a metal detector according to federal law.
whatthesmack··on Netflix Made Record Profits in 2020, Paid a Tax Rate of Less Than 1 Percent
No. They appropriate the employment taxes that they themselves are paying. Most folks aren't aware that employees in the US only pay half of the income tax for their employment. The company pays the other half. And those taxes usually aren't counted in these dramatic "blah company paid zero taxes" headlines. They also usually don't include real property taxes, sales taxes, etc.

Also to note, the US (now) has somewhat competitive corporate tax rates compared to its peer countries. However, most countries have a lower (or much lower) corporate tax rate than the US has. We shouldn't be comparing corporate tax rates with personal income tax rates... we should be comparing corporate tax rates amongst similar countries.

The lack of understanding of the tax rules by folks writing these dramatic headlines is really irritating.

whatthesmack··on Microsoft Coffee
Former Seattleite... those are (were?) legit KOMO news anchors. I believe the person on the left's name is Keith Eldridge. I don't remember the name of the person on the right, but I do recognize them.
whatthesmack··on In Stockholm there's currently an IT battle underway
That doesn't negate the truth conveyed by the quote... government is often horribly inefficient and many people don't want the so-called "help" the government forces upon those people.

I certainly know I could manage my retirement funds more efficiently than the government. I dislike all the "help" I see government doing when it often produces worse results than anarchy.

whatthesmack··on As U.S. schools shuttered, student mental health cratered, survey finds
Not necessarily. But at least don't actively perpetuate problems.
whatthesmack··on As U.S. schools shuttered, student mental health cratered, survey finds
It also doesn't necessarily make it a bad response. But when you factor in more than simply one detail (COVID vs COVID+economy+mental health), it starts to look like a good response.
whatthesmack··on As U.S. schools shuttered, student mental health cratered, survey finds
> ..with lockdowns in effect enough to keep hospitalization rates below capacity.

My understanding is that lockdowns didn't really change things significantly, so the "with lockdowns in effect" is not really relevant. See California (extreme lockdowns from the top) vs Florida (a bit of lockdown from the top) and their associated infection rate per 100k, which is nearly the same.

whatthesmack··on Greenwald: The Leading Activists for Online Censorship Are Corporate Journalists
Can you be more specific?

He's describing what a lot of us are seeing in the media these days. I closely identify with and agree with what he has written here. It seems like he is one of the few in the industry that actually has some level of self-awareness.

Also, what would he have to do to "find his way back"?

whatthesmack··on Israel's autonomous 'robo-snipers' and suicide drones raise ethical dilemma
"Borders all over the world" don't typically have Hezbollah shooting rockets over the border into civilian areas on a regular basis. This is a very unique scenario, and the best response to arbitrary rocket fire, if possible, is an automated and precise response. I highly doubt they're inventing these technologies for fun... there is a defensive need. It is a morally complex issue, because the whole scenario is more intricate than it seems you believe it to be.
whatthesmack··on Go Developer Survey 2020 Results
Regardless of your personal opinions and/or biases, it is still a political banner containing the name of a political advocacy group on a software development tool project page with what I'm sure is a very diverse set of users.

Some folks actively avoid politics, and seeing it at Go doesn't increase my confidence in the judgement of the folks leading Go.

The "you're actively with us, otherwise you're against us" mindset must learn nuance. Not everybody has to be political all of the time.

whatthesmack··on Attenborough gives stark warning on climate change to UN [video]
How many times have we survived a "the world is going to end in 12 years" trope spouted by climate apocalypse preachers? It really is a religion. The whole meme mocking voting and paying more taxes to change nature is such an accurate depiction.

Climate change is unavoidable (because nature)... but so is human ingenuity. We're constantly discovering new facts and approaches, and this is the major factor doomsayers never bring up in these discussions.

whatthesmack··on Starlink is now Accepting General Pre-orders
Backup internet.

I live in a remote, medium-sized city and need an internet link that constantly works. Comcast usually fills that need, but there are occasional outages. T-Mobile, Verizon, and AT&T's fixed internet offerings are not available where I am.

Starlink is what I've been waiting for :)

whatthesmack··on Parler’s epic fail: A crash course on running your own servers
I think you can bring your own public IP assignments to AWS. Wouldn't that do the trick? I mean, there's always tracerouting, I suppose.
whatthesmack··on External boot disks still don’t work properly with M1 Macs
> But is anyone else shocked at how well the transition to ARM has gone for Apple?

I totally get why some folks would want to wait for the next-gen of these initial machines, but I'm not surprised at how well it's gone.

I chose to buy the initial M1 MacBook Air model right-off-the-bat. The reason for this is that I went through the last two Mac CPU arch transitions (68k -> PPC, PPC -> x86), and the way Apple was able to handle those was truly impressive to me. Plus I really needed more built-in storage ASAP :)

whatthesmack··on TurboTax’s 20-Year Fight to Stop Americans from Filing Taxes for Free (2019)
This is so true. I don't think most folks understand how complex it all is, otherwise there would be more pushback to legislators that "allow" (through inaction) the tax code to be so complicated. It certainly has discouraged some from running their own business, because complying with it all costs time and money, which are resources large corporations have plenty of, but small businesses have precious little of.
whatthesmack··on Capitol Attack Was Months in the Making on Facebook
Seriously. That is stuff that nearly everybody's against and is a constant boogeyman brought up by many on the left, but they can't ever seem to demonstrate that it is a pervasive problem. Nobody admits to being a white supremacist because it's basically universally denounced.

But those same folks will happily excuse the whole BLM/Antifa rioting during 2020 where billions of dollars in property damage was caused and dozens of people died.

whatthesmack··on How Silicon Valley destroyed Parler
I don't doubt that it could be used as a hint among other points, but doesn't that approach scream "tyranny of the mob"? How often in the past has a minority view been objectively right and a majority view been wrong? For example, Galileo was accused of heresy due to his belief that the Earth revolved around the sun. The "maybe that someone is the problem" view would say Galileo was the problem.
whatthesmack··on Apple has threatened to ban Parler from the App Store
> It isn’t “censorship” to toss your ass off Twitter for violating their TOS

This is a misnomer. It's certainly censorship to "toss your ass off Twitter", even if somebody's arbitrary interpretation of a TOS concludes in the finding of a violation.

The concept of free speech doesn't just restrict the government via the First Amendment... it is a tradition and a founding principle (as documented in the Federalist Papers) of the United States of America, as well as a social contract.

I would argue that companies are obligated to abide by the principles of free speech, not from a legal perspective, but from a social perspective, lest they face the consequence of controversy Twitter is currently facing for banning the account of a sitting US President.

Ultimately, silencing people you disagree with is a no-win path to go down.

whatthesmack··on Permanent suspension of @realDonaldTrump
> no evidence that the election was crooked - the courts think so too

Haven't all of the cases been thrown out for lack of standing thus far? Doesn't that mean the evidence hasn't even been heard? How can the "courts think so too" if they haven't heard evidence?

Also, it's offensive when people say the election wasn't crooked to people that witnessed its crookedness firsthand. I am one of the many people whose ballot went uncounted.

whatthesmack··on Permanent suspension of @realDonaldTrump
I don't believe any of the electoral fraud claims were actually judged... it's all been rejected for a lack of standing. People saying courts rejected the fraud claims are generally mistaken, because the evidence never got presented.
whatthesmack··on Uber will charge significantly more per trip as new Seattle law goes into effect
It's strategic, smart, and absolutely legal.
whatthesmack··on Covid-19 Changes Our Sleep
> with less than 100k infections and 5k deaths

Acceptance of this statement requires trusting the output of the CCP, which is inherently dishonest with these sort of metrics for political purposes.

whatthesmack··on Voat Is Shutting Down
Here's a couple that some folks consider to be leftist extremism on Twitter:

- Blue checkmarks claiming lockdowns are a net benefit to the world

- Twitter adding their corporate opinion on the recent US election to some tweets

The aforementioned left-wing extremism has caused many of us to move to Parler.

whatthesmack··on California plan for wealth tax on anyone who spends 60 days a year in the state
It isn't a false equivalence, though.

From the original comment:

> taxing the top ~1% is to simply bring their wealth more in line with their contributions

The comment above yours is just pointing out that Bezos may contribute more, which would be an explanation for Bezos' outsize wealth. Whether it's true or not that Bezos contributes more is subjective, of course.

> It’s not healthy for society to have Bezos level wealth in one person.

That's an entirely different point unrelated to the "contribution" question/attribute.
