whataretensors··on Group of scientists suggest that octopuses might actually be aliens
The eventual babelfish trained using unsupervised alignment may make things like bird->human or octopus->human possible(or mycellial mass, if it turns out to be intelligent).

I have a suspicion that in the future human-centric mono-species intelligence and consciousness assumptions will be tested, and the outcome may be similar to discovering other galaxies in terms of the impact on humanity's collective psyche.

Mention anything about working with blockchains on HN and you get downvoted. I'm not sure how this place became so close-minded, or if HN was always this way and I changed.

A side project is risk. It's time and money that you invest into something. Working with chains requires technical and engineering solutions. You can build dapps, tokens, chain integrations, or just set up some mining/nodes.

The device owners better not accidentally track an EU citizen or they might have to pay fines.

whataretensors··on How to disappear from the internet
The way I understand regulation is that it usually entrenches the existing players, making it even harder to fail.
whataretensors··on How to disappear from the internet
This likely won't work for long. Detecting fake profiles seems like a solvable problem with ML.
whataretensors··on Netflix is basically remaking all of TV now
I believe we will see the democratization of content creation with AI.
whataretensors··on Open-Sourcing our GDPR Compliance Preparation For Articles 30, 32, and 35
Government bodies don't care about your private data or they would disband the NSA.

They will however copy the GDPR as an excuse to create tools to prevent disruption, manipulate markets, and to expand their organizational reach.

whataretensors··on Google de-emphasizes 'Don't Be Evil' motto in its code of conduct
It's the start of a post scarcity society. I'll take the not having to work and having a cure for every disease route of history, even if it's bumpy.

There are real threats to the transition though. My honest fear is that the people who discover it make themselves immortal gods and subjugate or kill everyone else.

whataretensors··on Google de-emphasizes 'Don't Be Evil' motto in its code of conduct
Isn't that the turing test? I'm excited about the potential of passing it in my lifetime.
whataretensors··on Google de-emphasizes 'Don't Be Evil' motto in its code of conduct
Can you elaborate why making AI pose as humans is unethical?
whataretensors··on How to Come Up with Profitable Business Ideas
Another risky way to setup an extra income source is to invest capital setting up blockchain services that give rewards.
whataretensors··on Trump urged U.S.P.S to double package rates for Amazon: Washington Post
Then when Amazon creates a new distribution mechanism using AI they'll be surprised.

I like the dream of decentralized delivery agents where no central authority can take a cut or intercede.

Edit: What the hell, it turns out amazon deliveries are government subsidized to the tune of ~$1.5/each.

whataretensors··on GDPR: Don't Panic
Ads != drug cartels.

I don't think you are a horrible person.

whataretensors··on Epigenetics: The Evolution Revolution
I'm of course against racism.

If epigenetics is multi-generational then what of things like slavery and the ungodly number of atrocities littering our history, both race-based or otherwise. What things do we do now that are going to be harmful in such capacity, beyond the obvious prison system.

More importantly, I think we could potentially improve ourselves collectively by harnessing this power. I know my own family history is littered with trauma.

whataretensors··on Epigenetics: The Evolution Revolution
Slippery slope here. Most people don't understand or accept evolution, even engineers. For example, anyone who accepts equitable distribution of attributes across genetic variances(a commonly accepted social narrative).

Evolution is messy. Epigenetics makes it even messier. We have to be careful not to conflate the value of someone by anything genetic. Especially not epigenetics, which seems from this article to be related to childhood trauma.

I'm interested in how we can use AI to modify genetic code to improve and fix our past epigenetic and genetic shortcomings.

whataretensors··on Data Science Is America’s Hottest Job
That's not a rebuttal. It's absolutely non-technical gatekeepers looking for certificates.

Graduates get mad because they realize they've wasted a bunch of money on something they can learn for free, so they reject the notion and make others go through the same abusive system.

whataretensors··on Data Science Is America’s Hottest Job
This is commonplace. I think it's due to the dilbert effect. If you can't judge candidates based on ability, you have to judge them based on accreditation. Larger organizations tend to have more layers of non-technical people evaluating technical candidates.

It's not particular to ML, though ML is worse than others. CS degrees are luckily becoming less needed for basic programming jobs.

whataretensors··on $11M settlement reached with Google regarding terminated AdSense accounts
That'll show em. I wonder if Google even had to move money from anywhere, or if it was fine to pay with profits from part of the day.
whataretensors··on Why read old philosophy?
> More than that though, they are vital parts of having a well rounded education where knowledge at a base level in areas almost always elevates your ability to think well in others.

Is there any evidence of this? Liberal arts majors claim it but I haven't really seen any proof. The philosophy courses I took in college had professors with an air of smug self-righteousness and faux-enlightenment. It seems more likely that the people who study this stuff then backwards rationalize why it was important.

I also think "well rounded education" is a tactic to keep people under the misinformed idea that intelligence can be earned. Wisdom, maybe, but not intelligence. That's pretty well established to be locked in around 7.

whataretensors··on GDPR: Don't Panic
Because those businesses don't employ anyone? I assume you've never had to work a job you don't care for.
whataretensors··on GDPR: Don't Panic
I'm not sure about that paper. It's based on someone's research who works at the census bureau and a university professor. They're interest is also in making their employer look good.

Also the paper ends in "we also may be mis-measuring dynamism."

whataretensors··on GDPR: Don't Panic
When people losing their jobs due to government overreach makes you happy, check your motivations.
whataretensors··on GDPR: Don't Panic
I'm not making that argument. It's a reflection of how the law is about expanding government power without considering technology.
whataretensors··on GDPR: Don't Panic
> in the spirit of the good natured enforcers at the various data protection agencies in Europe

Is this serious? Why would we assume enforcers to be good natured if they benefit from fines. Or to assume they would stay good natured, even if you have the most perfect humans there now.

It's far more likely that the EU is creating tools to prevent disruption and manipulate markets. The template will likely be followed elsewhere, effectively elevating the state's data collection abilities over all other organizations.

Note, Bitcoin does not seem compatible with their laws.

whataretensors··on The SEC created its own scammy ICO to teach investors a lesson
Tax dollars at work. Complete waste of money and time.

How about clarifying a path forward for people instead of the vague threat of prison and fines. Also the howey test was invented in the 40s, it's stupid and lazy to apply it here.

whataretensors··on GDPR: Removing Monal from the EU
> We sleep-walked into a society where the expectation is that any and all data is scooped up and sent off remotely without adequate controls and I think it's great that the EU GDPR is making people wake up to the scale of it.

Government intelligence organizations like the NSA and foreign equivalents will now have a monopoly on unsolicited data collection. Which, combined with selective enforcement to prevent disruption of gov cartels, is one of the few reasons it went through.

whataretensors··on Hundreds of Bitcoin Wannabes Show Hallmarks of Fraud
Yes skepticism is healthy, and I'm wrong to assume ops abilities.

It seems obvious that dapps can decentralize supplier/consumer relationships, removing the 30% that perhaps ops job relies on.
