what_ever··on The day I discovered that Apple Maps is Kind of Good now
... when you are stopped in traffic or at a light. And IIRC, this was there before the Google acquisition?

Disc: Googler but nowhere close to the products discussed here.

what_ever··on Apple Event March 8, 2022
Yup, that and all the hand movements (along with the usual grandiose words used) were so distracting that I just stopped watching it.
what_ever··on Google is wrong. Apple’s iMessage is a failure
I think you are missing the point - quite a bit. No one is asking Apple to give up iMessage and replace it with RCS. The ask is to replace SMS fallback with RCS fallback. When you message someone without an iPhone, you currently use SMS. Even though you are using the iMessage app, the message is sent using SMS.

With RCS instead of SMS, iMessage will continue to "Just Work" as it does right now. iOS<->iOS will still happen over iMessage.

> I had an Android phone when RCS was rolling out. It never worked.

It has rolled out now though. No one asked iMessage to support RCS back then. They are being asked now. So it's not relevant what happened with you whenever you had Android phone.

> Well before then, iMessage - like most message platforms - already did everything that RCS did and far better.

iMessage did that for iOS<->iOS communication. Not for messages sent over SMS.

> No other messaging app is as simple and easy to use as iMessages.

This won't change with RCS.

> I will never trust a google messaging service to last and be around in 5 years.

The protocol should stay there as the SMS one is still around. If G gives up support, the fallback for RCS is... SMS which is anyway supported by iMessage already.

Disc: Googler but nowhere close to Android, RCS, any messaging app.

what_ever··on Apple execs: Let's take a 30% cut of Uber and Lyft's membership programs (2018)
May be I am too naive but even if you want to limit to apps/companies providing similar kind of services, I don't think this to be something Uber/Lyft wouldn't have tried to do eventually anyway? May be others just had bigger fish to fry?
what_ever··on Google doesn't want to pay Sonos for technology it copied
> But Sonos claims Google actually did steal the technology. And the court agrees.

Could you please point to me where you see the ITC (International Trade Commission) that you call as "court" agreeing to the specific paragraph that you posted? I am not arguing with you, just want to know this better myself.

what_ever··on Tell HN: Salary data is for sale
Yes, as I said from the other comment, I provided that when I started. From GP's comment, I thought they are saying they had to provide the SSN before they started.
what_ever··on Tell HN: Salary data is for sale
When you start. From reading the GP's comment I felt this was done before they started.
what_ever··on Tell HN: Salary data is for sale
I provided that on the day I started. Not when I accepted my offer.
what_ever··on Tell HN: Salary data is for sale
I guess. I always thought b/g checks are done via third party but I don't recall being asked for SSN during that step. It's been a while so I guess I am not remembering right. Thanks.
what_ever··on Tell HN: Salary data is for sale
Nope. Didn't in my case.
what_ever··on Tell HN: Salary data is for sale
Does the system not ask for SSN to pull this data? If yes, how did Google get your SSN?

what_ever··on Google is building a new augmented reality device and operating system
If you read my comment again, if you sell your stocks immediately after vesting, there is little to no gain. You can even do this automatically at Google using autosale program. Yes, this is short term gain, but it's negligible compared to how much you are getting paid. e.g. Let's say the stock was at $1000 when vested and by the time you got around to sell it 5 days after it's at $1050 - 5% gain which is not so common in usual scenarios. You will pay short term capital gain tax only on $50. This is the only additional tax you will pay compared to getting $1000 in cash as part of your base salary. The $1000 stock itself will be taxed as normal income.

The gain you get on the stock from vest till you sell is a bonus anyway compared to if you were just given straight cash.

I would advise you to run some actual numbers to get this. I don't need to as I have been getting paid this for last 5 years at Google.

what_ever··on Google is building a new augmented reality device and operating system
> The cliff is irrelevant, if you leave before you fully vest your pay rate does not actually match what you claim.

This doesn't make sense as well. You don't need to work at Google for a year to get the first year's equity. So there is no one year cliff.

The frequency of how often you vest is also monthly. Specially at the L6+ levels. So you will lose at most of one month's equity (i.e. 1/48th of the grant) if you are bad at planning your last day. So to put actual numbers again, let's say your offer is 240k cash + 240k RSUs every year. So you vest 240k/12 = 20k in RSUs every month on say 20th of the month. If you leave on the 19th of your 12 month of the employment (i.e. before finishing one year), you don't lose on 240k of RSUs but just 20k of RSUs. So you will earn 220k of cash + 229k of RSUs before you leave.

what_ever··on Google is building a new augmented reality device and operating system
> RSUs taxed as short term gains and not long term

That's not correct. RSUs get taxed as normal income. So whether you get $600k cash or $300k cash + $300k of RSUs, your tax bill is the same. The gain on the RSUs get taxed as short or long term capital gain. That comes into picture when you sell. If you auto-sell, there is no/very little gain, so no additional tax there and for intents and purpose, it's as if getting $600k in cash.

The numbers reported on levels.fyi are not useless. They give you a good idea of what one can get if they started working there at that moment. You can extrapolate more out of it by understanding the stock gain.

what_ever··on Waymo will start testing self-driving cars in New York City
> you also come close to breaking some HN guidelines about not insinuating bad intentions

To be clear, I don't think the posters have bad intentions or in other words making such comments intentionally. It's just how any community evolves over the time if conscious efforts to curtail discussions heading in such directions are not made.

what_ever··on Waymo will start testing self-driving cars in New York City
These days, it looks like everyone on HN comes with a preconceived notion about the company, topic, product, technology a given submission is and write their views as if they are expert on everything before reading the post and giving it a thought. e.g. in this post, Waymo, a company who has spent billions of dollars and years of work and research and being where they are right now, is posting about their plans. It's obvious they must have thought about the traffic, the jaywalkers, the complex intersections, the weather before making this decision. But let's ignore that and post how this is a bad idea. Being a skeptic is fine. It just feels like the skepticism is dialed to 11 here.

There is nothing technical about the replies, nothing hacker about them. Just, "I am very smart" comments.

Coinbase is different - see my comment here - https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=28808455.
what_ever··on 1 Year of Coinbase as a mission focused company
Coinbase is different. The conversion to stocks doesn't happen at grant-time value for all of the grant. The conversion happens at the start of every year of the grant life. So if the stock goes up in the first year, you get fewer stocks for the second year (equaling to grant/4 in value). See my other sibling comment in this thread.
what_ever··on 1 Year of Coinbase as a mission focused company
There are two different ways companies give RSUs.

1. You get $X of stock grant when you join. This gets converted to number of stocks based on the value of the stock when you join and then the stock vests over the next 4 years. So if you get a stock grant of $400k when you join and the price of the stock at joining is $1000, you get 400 stocks that vest over the 4 years.

2. You get $X of stock grant when you join. This grant gets divided into $X/4 over the next 4 years. The number of stocks then gets decided each of those 4 years based on the value at the start of that year. So let's say you get a stock grant of $400k. So you get stock worth $100k every year. If the stock is at $1000 for the first year you get 100 stocks for the first year. If the stock goes up to $2000 at the start of second year, you get only 100 stocks. If it goes down to $500 for the third year, you get 200 stocks. So upside is capped. You will only get stocks worth $100k each year.

2. is what followed by Coinbase and Stripe. Some other companies are moving that direction as well. 1. is followed by FAAMG.

what_ever··on 1 Year of Coinbase as a mission focused company
What do you mean by stock for free? Do you only consider the base salary as the actual salary and stocks as bonus which could be $0? Because that doesn't make any sense...
what_ever··on Apple to face EU antitrust charge over NFC chip
> Every purchase gets you dollars on your Amazon account, so I actually use those rewards (versus the other “points” or “miles” I’ve had over the years and never used).

Well good for you. But there are tons of cards that give $ directly in your bank account instead of Amazon account and at a better rate as well. e.g. Chase Freedom has 5% cashback categories every quarter that can be converted into real dollars at 1:1 rate. So...

what_ever··on Apple Reports Third Quarter Results
> Android OEM head units started appearing in 2012: https://www.androidauthority.com/android-powered-oem-car-ste...

Yes, but these were Android tablets fitted into head units. Not Androind Auto - a UI specifically designed to be used while driving which would make the Android OS liable for legal issues.

> It's really just my opinion that Apple wouldn't go out of their way to port software to a different platform with no PR-friendly purpose.

They don't need to. The ask in this comment thread was to have the CarPlay UI on the phone itself - the phone being an iPhone.
