whalesalad··on Global shortage has led to motor oil rationing at Costco
Diesel trucks. My Ram 1500 with the 5.7 Hemi takes 7 qt. The 5.9 Cummins in my Ram 2500 takes 12 qts.
whalesalad··on 118M Queries per Second on Neki
would love to hear more about the ebs volumes, iops/size/raid configuration
whalesalad··on Matt Mullenweg tells Automattic staff in Slack he's back in control after ouster
Everything that I know about Matt Mullenweg has been against my will.
whalesalad··on 118M Queries per Second on Neki
I estimated the cluster to achieve this was ~$3-4k per-hour. I am thinking there is a typo on the r8g.16xlarge and they are actually r8gd.16xlarge (notice the d) which comes with directly attached nvme disks.
whalesalad··on DNS abuse and criminal infrastructure
Wow I was at ICANN Seville and missed this talk. Thanks for the link.
whalesalad··on Show HN: Linux server management over SSH – written in Rust and Tauri
All of these "written in rust" ai-slop tools lately. Means absolutely nothing, really.
whalesalad··on P99 0 ms* autocomplete for 240M domain names
Tranco is only top 1M domains.
whalesalad··on Bye, Bye GitHub
It’s like the restaurant that is cash only and refuses to accept credit cards. Like bruh, what?
whalesalad··on Get your Windows license refund
You are forgetting that we are free to change and invent new rules whenever we want. PC manufacturers can change this. Some already have, like Lenovo (sorta) and Framework. It does not need to be the way that it has been.
whalesalad··on The Twelve-Factor App
When people ask me what my religious beliefs are, this is what I respond with.
whalesalad··on Get your Windows license refund
This is such a boomer coded 'deal with it' take. The manufacturer is going to charge you a premium for the software license. If you never intend to use that license, it's completely reasonable to think that we could live in a world where you could uncheck a box and avoid that altogether.
whalesalad··on Judge rules Trump administration’s blacklisting of Anthropic was illegal
Unlawful means absolutely nothing these days.
whalesalad··on Show HN: Yet another minimal and lightweight terminal multiplexer written in Go.
cc works fine for me in tmux. there is also the `/tui` command that will change the behavior of the harness from one that intercepts scrolling etc (they call this fullscreen) and the default. I run mine in default mode.
whalesalad··on Show HN: Yet another minimal and lightweight terminal multiplexer written in Go.
I hate to be that guy, but why would I use this over tmux? All of the features and qualities noted in the readme do not feel novel or unique.
whalesalad··on GLM-5.3-Flash
they have 2 interfaces each so you typically daisy chain them
whalesalad··on Show HN: I made a Raspberry with Qwen my local car AI
So far so good, hasn’t failed me yet. It’s done a stellar job chasing down parts for my cub cadet lawn mower too. Sorted out mid year model revisions and everything. I just gave it the sticker under the seat.
whalesalad··on Apple introduces M6 and M5 Ultra
20 years of mac use has me feeling severely handicapped without it.
whalesalad··on Show HN: I made a Raspberry with Qwen my local car AI
Just a few hours ago I gave ChatGPT my window sticker and the installation manual for a new suspension setup. I asked for new hardware that would typically be replaced during this install, like torque-to-yield bolts and fasteners. I also asked for new oil filters. I got a comprehensive grid of the exact part numbers needed in a nice dense table. sol 5.6 high is my daily driver.

If you have not tried it this is an absolute game changer for Mac users moving to Linux. https://github.com/RedBearAK/toshy

I've been running it for 3 years now. I am so macpilled that I had to install it on my new Framework 13 pro.

The Mac muscle memory was always my biggest hurdle with Linux. I always felt handicapped by it. But Toshy eliminates that.

whalesalad··on Codefloe Is a Professionally Hosted Public Git Forge
That is fair. This was just the only thing in their terms that I could find that made any mention in regards to data protection. If you are running a service like this, some kind of SLA should exist. I am less concerned with financial protections and more concerned with data protection.
whalesalad··on Codefloe Is a Professionally Hosted Public Git Forge
"In no event shall CodeFloe or its suppliers be liable for any damages (including, without limitation, damages for loss of data or profit, or due to business interruption)"

So many fly-by-night "github replacements" popping up. Step 1, buy a hetzner dedi server from the auction for $100/mo. Step 2, install Forgejo. Step 3, ride the wave of anti-US, anti-big-corp senitment to get users onto your platform. Step 4, an HDD fails in your i9-13900k and you lose half of your users' data.

If you are going to offer hosting, you need to state what kind of guarantees around data protection you offer.

whalesalad··on NetBSD and my life (2005)
> NetBSD during peak hours, our httpd servers can deal with 35 requests per minute(internal and external).

even in 2005 this is abysmal. no reflection of netbsd tho - likely a terrible app.

whalesalad··on NetBSD and my life (2005)
I have been wanting to do this for a while. I have used FreeBSD and OpenBSD in server or embedded environments, but never as a desktop. And I have zero experience with NetBSD or DragonflyBSD but want to play with those too.
whalesalad··on Felony charges for citizen deleting phone data at US Border
i remember when hacker news was full of hackers. that persona is dead now.

whalesalad··on Omacom Foundation launches with $8M
My gripe with omarchy is that it could be a script applied on top of bare arch or bare cachyos, i'm not sure why it needs to be a standalone distribution. Also try as I might - I cannot get down with hyprland. KDE for life! All this being said, positivity and investment in the Linux ecosystem is always a good thing.
whalesalad··on Linux 7.2
I have been using HDMI to game on TV for most or all of my adult life. Mostly console gaming. A few years back I built a dedicated gaming rig, but I still use it with a controller from my couch connected to a TV.

So this is a win for couch gamers and open source in general.

whalesalad··on Go 1.27
Personally I feel go has many issues and is ugly as hell but the error handling is really the least of my worries.
