wfbarks··on The more you use Facebook, the worse you feel (2017)
Does the article establish a causal link?
wfbarks··on Elon Musk Gambled Tesla to Save SolarCity
Don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good
wfbarks··on Elon Musk Gambled Tesla to Save SolarCity
If Elon Musk gets taken down, then humanity should probably just throw in the towel.

We (humanity) are in a boat that is taking on water rapidly. The guy working the hardest to patch the leaks is Elon Musk and all those that work at his companies (they definitely aren't working there for the money or the lifestyle)

Solar City is a part of this vision.

Articles like this and the comments section here at hacker news are making me very depressed about our prospects.

wfbarks··on Elon Musk Gambled Tesla to Save SolarCity
He (and all the brilliant people at his companies who work so hard) are delivering to humanity, a future where we produce and consume energy sustainably, and are out in space exploring our solar system. Everyone at the companies is there because on some level they believe in this vision. So I (and many Tesla shareholders like me) am willing to look the other way with respect to his fiduciary responsibility.

There are better targets out there.

wfbarks··on Facebook Said It Would Give Detailed Data to Academics. They’re Still Waiting
I feel like journalists just put facebook between a rock and hard place.

"Facebook is sharing data with company X, arrrggh"

"Facebook isn't sharing data with Academics, arrrrgh"

wfbarks··on You've heard of “yes men”. Now learn about “no men” (2011)
These where my thoughts, "No" guy could have a good reason for no swap. no swap might have been a fix for some other issue OP is unaware of, which OP has now reverted. Don't know until you ask...

Meh... You have your facts and I have mine... https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/TDSP and https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/HDTGPDUSQ163N
wfbarks··on Beware the ‘Buyback Economy’
Household debt is not at record highs... Auto Loans and Student Loans are getting more problematic, but no reason to go all chicken little.

Tend to agree generally that we are approaching the apex of the cycle, and that share buybacks may be creating a sort of short term thermal.

wfbarks··on A Former Tesla Staffer Became an Internet Millionaire in His Spare Time
I hate that word "Staffer"
wfbarks··on Can a new mayor fix San Francisco’s housing and homelessness problems?

wfbarks··on I've Paid $18,000 to a $24,000 Student Loan, and I Still Owe $24,000
maybe you shouldn't have gone to private school, or not gone to college at all.
wfbarks··on In 2004, Zuckerberg Broke Into a Facebook User's Private Email Account (2010)
was wondering what type of journalist would decide to write an article like this, then realized the author came out of Gawker.
wfbarks··on Ask HN: What is your favourite programming language? Why?
swift, because it has a high level syntax with a really nice Generics implementation, but can still interface relatively easily with low level API's. Also because it uses reference counting for memory management instead of mark and sweep garbage collection so has more predictable performance and low memory overhead.
wfbarks··on Machine Learning with TensorFlow is now published
Whats with the Dragon chewing on the bloody the human arm?
wfbarks··on Former employees say Lyft staffers spied on passengers
I hate that word "Staffers", immediately makes me think of politics.
wfbarks··on Has Li-battery genius John Goodenough done it again? Colleagues are skeptical
Seems like a pretty good battery, but is it goodenough?
wfbarks··on Show HN: Ponzi.es – Startup sticker ponzi scheme
the amount of time and effort I'm willing to spend to get start up stickers is probably about equal to the effort it takes to type in the address to mail them to. probably less.
wfbarks··on Sprout
Dude, its called a spork. It was invented by taco bell, and its brilliant.
wfbarks··on The New Haskell Homepage

wfbarks··on The Curse of Smart People
hubris develops because you don't get the humility of failure. Great article!
