wesapien··on The top 10% owns 87% of the stocks
The memecoin stuff is just chefs kiss. Now he wants to impose tarrifs while not having the local production capacity. The citizens will pay for that. The rich will get the tax cuts and funding while everyone else will get austerity and be required to pull up your bootstraps.
wesapien··on An update on Mozilla's terms of use for Firefox
Silly me, I just realized its mostly a concern for users using their "Sync" service. *Even a host file from filterlists.com won't block that unless you stop using their service.* A host file will stop you from using the service that's a better way to word this. Haha. Don't use their services.

If one opted out of all the possible data collection and privacy related options, are they still able to collect your data? If yes, how does it work? Is this called client-side scanning?
wesapien··on Amazon now discloses you're buying a license to view Kindle eBooks
The longer we stay in this time line capitalism starts to look like feudalism
wesapien··on String of recent killings linked to Bay Area 'Zizians'
After seeing this news, I recall watching a video by Julia Galef about "what is rationality". Would it be fair to say that in this situation, they lack epistemic rationality but are high in instrumental rationality?
wesapien··on Red Hat Woos VMware Shops with OpenShift Virtualization Engine
I haven't worked on these systems for a long time. As I mentioned to another user, during testing, we'd pull out server blades to see if this mechanism works. The blades would be connected to the same storage array. Even this VMware website says "vSphere vMotion enables zero-downtime, live migration of workloads from one server to another so your users can continue to access the systems they need to stay productive." https://www.vmware.com/products/cloud-infrastructure/vsphere...
wesapien··on Red Hat Woos VMware Shops with OpenShift Virtualization Engine
It's been awhile since I tested this but I had played around this on Cisco 5108 blade servers. We'd test vMotion by pulling out blades during testing to see the VM migrated. Isn't that what vMotion is for.
wesapien··on TikTok goes dark in the US
It's ridiculous. Who made their now so called adversary? Who shifted production to them?
wesapien··on Red Hat Woos VMware Shops with OpenShift Virtualization Engine
vMotion is about host failure. If a blade server dies, the vms can be spun up on another blade. Storage is same.
wesapien··on WTF Happened in 1971? (2019)
No, but there's a good reason they did this. The US would have run out of gold if they kept the gold standard. Due to the trade deficit, all the exporters would eventually drain the gold supply since gold is seen as better and the thing to be hoarded.
wesapien··on TikTok preparing for U.S. shut-off on Sunday
I agree. It's the same class of people that helped China become the world's factory that is now saying what it has always been. These are the same people that is still running America.
wesapien··on Nix – Death by a Thousand Cuts
What makes you reluctant from using flakes? I initially thought I'd never have a need for flakes but after spending an hour on YouTube and Googling, I converted to flakes.
wesapien··on Detrimental Decibels: A Study of Noise Levels in Vancouver's SkyTrain System (2022)
I agree. From what I can recall, the Expo line is just as loud as riding in a Tokyo subway. Good thing I always have an in-ear or NC headphone with me when I travel.
wesapien··on Zuckerberg approved training Llama on LibGen [pdf]
Has there been experiments/testing at city/state scale. UBI is country scale and it's way more complex than testing it on a small town of people who I assume are selected for their needs.
wesapien··on Zuckerberg approved training Llama on LibGen [pdf]
UBI has less friction as far as implementation since we don't need qualify anyone. With AI, we can afford to have that extra step (nuance) and be able to make sure its a needs based approach. The future requires various combinations of changes. Fix the tax system and then UBI (in this specific order) OR !UBI (needs based distribution).
wesapien··on Zuckerberg approved training Llama on LibGen [pdf]
I understand what UBI means but it's the effect is what I think people do not understand. Based on the Cantillon effect, UBI will just accelerate the separation between the rich and the poor.
wesapien··on Zuckerberg approved training Llama on LibGen [pdf]
Isn't UBI just going to raise inflation? People who don't need it will claim it and use the existing tax loopholes. Tax laws will need to be rewritte.
wesapien··on Cuttle – a MTG like game using a standard 52 card deck
Thanks buddy, this made it a lot easier to grasp without any reading on Cuttle.
wesapien··on Ask HN: A friend has brain cancer: any bio hacks that worked?
Goodluck to you and your friend. I only know about PEMF and will read about sOMF. I bought an ICES-PEMF a few years ago just to try it out for my back pain and it did help in reducing it and healing it. It's small and battery operated and was designed as a wearable but you need to come up with your own way of holding it close to your body. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZnGpibdAoic
wesapien··on Luigi Mangione's account has been renamed on Stack Overflow
Maybe in your bubble it's stable. Outside of that, it's not. There's tipping points. Just like the Americans tipping over to vote Trump. In the future, more points will be tipped when the asymmetrica effects of economic boom and bust cycles finally trip something.
wesapien··on Luigi Mangione's account has been renamed on Stack Overflow
Non-violence...lines get blurred while being cut throat and cold hearted when you do it to thousands or millions of people. I'm surprised the GFC didn't have anything like this given the damage it did.
wesapien··on Why Canada Should Join the EU
Canada traded superficial (harmful) diversity for a degraded identity.
wesapien··on Are Immutable Linux Distros right for you?
My Linux desktop experience has been 2 years of Ubuntu/Debian, 4 years of Fedora and 2 years of NixOS. Hands down, and NixOS is my favorite. It's easy to recover from issues since I've gotten the hang of the build error messages and/or I can just reset my config to the last commit. It took me one year before jumping into flakes and glad I did. Next year, I'm going into Home Manager.

A custom GPT have been surprisingly helpful after feeding it manuals for nix, nixpkgs and NixOS and other Linux books.

wesapien··on The world of tomorrow
Punching down is clealrly a sign of things regressing. The Cantillon effect is what separates the rich and those aren't. Trickle down economics doesn't work. Imagine telling those barely middle and poor Americans you're still doing better than Thais or South Africans. It doesn't help.
wesapien··on Coffee, sandwiches, underwear, beer: a day in the life of Japan's konbini
In the area I stayed in Tokyo, there was a konbini and supermarket across the street from my nearest subway. Food is definitely cheaper, more selection and better quality at the supermarket. I started making notes on Google Maps for any supermarket that I can find along my routes.
wesapien··on I was an MIT educated neurosurgeon – now I'm alone in the mountains [video]
I've dealt with lower back issues for a long time. The worst of it was long behind me and I've been diligent enough to not have crippling events. My lower back hasn't felt as good and pain free as of today.I don't know if it was all the walking I've been doing (vacation) and the bag on my back (weird right). The biggest change was the level of stress after vacation. I haven't been on one for over 7 years.

I feel much more relaxed these days but I can also tell that everyday this "stress bucket" is slowly getting filled by daily life and I have to dump it all out by doing something other than the ordinary. I'm not a super healthy eater but I'm conscientious about it. I'm not a gym goer or even home exerciser. Once in a while, I'd use my weights and do somebody weight exercises.I don't eat fruits and vegetables as much as one should. I also know that there is great variability in humans.

I'm also much more aware of my body and what it needs as far as physical therapy exercises. I've a lot of time watching videos on physical therapy and back pain. I spend the most of my time at home walking on a treadmill while watching something on the TV.

wesapien··on 7-Eleven is reinventing its food business to be more Japanese [video]
I stayed in Japan for two months and some days I don't feel like sitting down for food. I go to a a grocery store (or supermarket) and grab food there to take home. If there's none along the way, I go for konbini.
wesapien··on Ente Auth: open-source Authy alternative for 2FA
Is there a list of services that have a specific 2FA provider requirement? In my experience, my when my service ask for 2FA it usually says Google Authenticator and use Authy. I'm looking to migrate out of Authy in the near future.

What ever happened to Openflow? Wouldn't this be a perfect device for it? Setting up a lab for it was almost impossible thats why I lost interest.
