werid··on How does Google Authenticator work?
at one point i used a python script to provide a totp response to google when using youtube-dl (before logging in became broken and had to switch to cookies)

    import onetimepass as otp
    my_secret = ''
    my_token = otp.get_totp(my_secret)
    print my_token
werid··on Gooey: Turn almost any Python command line program into a GUI application
I wish people would stop linking MrS0m30n3's GUI. It's no longer maintained and other fork(s) are active. The one which so far retains the look is called yt-dlg now.

We have a big list of youtube-dl GUI's over on /r/youtubedl's wiki: https://www.reddit.com/r/youtubedl/wiki/info-guis

werid··on Afraid to Google a thing because I don't want the algorithm to think I like it
It's annoying clicking some youtube link only to find it was something you really don't want more of, and then youtube proceed to recommend much more of it, even though you barely watched any of it.

kinda forces me to watch something else that is new but at least somewhat wanted in an attempt to make the algorithm look at the new shiny i'm interested in and forget the previous one.

i find it funny though when amazon still make recommendations to me based on a purchase in 1998. yes, Jeff, i still want to buy wrestling VHS tapes...

werid··on YouTube-dl's repository has been restored
this is why it was forked a bit before the takedown, youtube-dlc contains fixes not in main youtube-dl. the guy who forked it tried to help but got banned from posting and helping out.

https://github.com/blackjack4494/yt-dlc

as of last youtube-dl version, the main youtube-dl behaves differently if you simply point it to a youtube channel, while youtube-dlc behaves as you'd expect... i keep both around for now.

werid··on No More Google
i don't remember if it was something in particular that caused me to do it, but i de-googled the part that mattered the most. my email. i moved to fastmail with my own domain. a few years later i dropped android too. this way, google can't destroy my online life. it would be very painful to lose my email archive, and access to new emails from other services.

i don't need to de-google myself from search or youtube. they're read-only for me. i don't post videos to youtube. i do use the subscription feature on channels and sometimes create some private playlists, and i enjoy the recommendation sometimes finding me gems, but i could do wityout it, or even re-create it if needed. (all my subscriptions are backed up as pinboard bookmarks with tags)

werid··on Pinboard Turns Eleven
I imported my bookmarks into pinboard, but found it quite a chore to go through them and tag them properly, so I abandoned that. Firefox sync keeps my bookmarks available everywhere anyways.

Now I use pinboard for my youtube subscriptions, every time I subscribe to someone on youtube, I add it to pinboard and tag it.

Very useful when your subscriptions range from several different sports to tech or gaming.

Would do same for instagram but I have too many subscriptions and it's useless when someone changes their @account.

They could really do with a lists feature ala twitter.

werid··on Opening up BBC Sounds to others’ podcasts and commercial radio
This is already a problem in sports, especially football/soccer. Many leagues/competitions are spread out among several streaming services.

Facebook is going out of business you say?
werid··on Why can’t a bot tick the 'I'm not a robot' box?
Signing up for facebook, after a short period, they'll lock your account due to suspicious activity, even if you have done nothing (maybe that's suspicous?), and demand a phone number or a photo.

If you sign up and provide a phone number, they'll just demand a photo. Twice. Giving them the same photo seems to work though, and leave your account in peace...

They never accused me of being a robot though.

werid··on Facebook will reveal who uploaded your contact info for ad targeting
I looked at the advertisers who uploaded a contact list with me in it...

* Motley Denim

* TV2 Sumo

* Bandcamp

* NBA

I am a bit surprised it was only four, and a bit disappointed bandcamp was one of them.

werid··on Bye, Bye, Google
An issue with fastmail folders is that you can't easily create or move them around in the structure without entering a settings page. Same with creating rules for folders, that's on a whole different page. This part of the system could really use some attention from their developers.
werid··on Linux 4.19
I said nothing of how big the split was.

It seems the loud voices about how bad the CoC is aren't actually kernel devs...

But there is atleast one known kernel dev who spoke up about Linus' behaviour, and eventually just quit developing for the kernel.

edit: not to mention those who don't want to touch the kernel because of his behaviour. one guy said the only contributions he makes to the kernel are for his employer. if it wasn't for that, he'd not touch it.

werid··on Linux 4.19
The community was already split. Those who tolerated his behaviour and those who didn't.
werid··on Vivaldi 2.0 – includes sync, resizable tab tiling, floating web panels and more
Vivaldi has it from beginning because von Tetzchner came from Opera, which also did this back in the day. Their pre-chrome version was an MDI application.
werid··on Slack outage: Connectivity issues affecting all workspaces
Funny you should mention google, as something is down over there right now. lots of reports of chromecasts being dead right, assuming something at google is down which is causing this.
werid··on How Instagram’s algorithm works
In the app, if I start by watching a bunch of stories... it'll refresh the main feed when I go out of stories, but I haven't even scrolled down to see those posts yet.

With a "random" feed, it makes it real hard to find out what you just missed.

This is the best they could come up?

That's so strange, in Norway, I can still load LA Times.
werid··on Don't use VPN services
I only use a VPN when I need to get around geo-restrictions.
werid··on The FastMail Security Mindset
I did the switch a few years ago. I setup forwarding after importing all my emails from gmail, then i spent months changing email on services whenever i used them. eventually you finish and can stop the forwarding or close the gmail account completely.

> You have to follow all the laws, all the time. Speeding? That's a ticket. Running a red light? Ticket. Bumping another car? Ticket!

> I wish they would include an arcade or "god mode" so you could actually have fun.

They do. Look in settings, you can disable vehicle offenses (so no fines for running red light, crashing, speeding) and you can disable traffic too (might need a mod, i dont recall)

When it comes to the city layouts, the DLCs for Scandinavia and France have better and different layouts than the main game.

werid··on Whatever happened to Winamp?
> Point is, it doesn't let me choose. It arbitrarily selects one version of an album which is not necessarily the one I want.

This is not spotify's fault btw. Some bands have original record and the remastered version available. It is decided by the label/band.

Some bands think the original version is flawed, hence why they remastered it. Others might have been forced a remaster on them by label, or simply know that fans value both versions.
