weq··on I hacked my car
Hacking on a car is making the CEL turn off by tricking the computer into thinking the senors are correct with a resister you have wired inline in order to keep you $1k beater from `02 on the road. Reverting your car to a state where u can maintain it by keeping up its mechanical worthiness out of sync with the useless sensor after sensor that dies whos sole purpose it to allow idiots to drive cars and not burn them down.

Modern cars are literly just hyper-optimised consumer goods. Hyper optimised for warrenty periods and unskillly supply chains with no quality control or pride. modern cars are literly like going to a LAN party with a different personing bringing boxes that need to interact without failure. not happening. hackable to the hilt because pentesting cant be warrentied out.

weq··on Hijacking Email with Cloudflare Email Routing
I agree. As an architect at a listed company, trusting user supplied data like this would usually get caught in either planning or at CR before hitting QA.
weq··on Ask HN: Would you implement security setup for three letter agencies
Are you responding to a tender? U usually dont get much of a choice, you would comply with the relevant regulations for the security level of the network you are building for.
weq··on U.S. Gas Prices Have Fallen for 50 Straight Days
Im all for getting off oil, but getting off it onto rare earth minerals is not green.

EVs have a life span of less then 10yrs, they often blow up catastropically, they rely one rare earth minerals to be built and run, they are very hard and expensive to fix, and they are charged via fossil fuels the majority of the time; they are not saving the planet of anything. They are marketing! Green is worth big money.

weq··on S3 isn't getting cheaper
To the software wide of the equation --> open source is NOT the answer, abstractions ARE. The problem with programmers TODAY is that they take technical article written by a a cloud provider as gospel, and start slathering large layers of priority api calls/technical debt all over their solution - because thats what example code is designed todo, LOCK YOU IN. No need for contract nasties when your devs are doing the work for them!

Use an eggshell architecture, put your dependencies on the edge. global dependencies are the enermy.

For IAC, thats a slightly different story.

weq··on After bus fire, CT pulls electric fleet from service
LION batteries are insane - to see what happens at serach for this on youtube. There are mass graveyards of e-bikes after battery suppliers where rebadging low quality cells are higher ones leading to a generation of lottery tickets. Something like 5 fires a day for e-bike, not sure of the stats on cars.

weq··on Facebook's TikTok-like redesign marks sunset of social networking era
No.

Facebook DOES NOT OWN social networking. Facebook improved on an existing design at the right time, PERIOD! Now, as before, the world has moved on, and the bubble has burst. The laggards in 3rd world countries will flock to the next service to disrupt social media, just like before. Facebook innovated at a time when mobile phones were being delivered to these countries. Not because they were a superior service or somehow godlike in its ability to hold mindshare. Tiktok, by its very nature, is its own worse enermy. Chinas economy is crumbling as we speak, and its not going to be long before the CCP will get caught with their hands in the cookie jar. No one makes money in China without authority from the superme leader. And No one can be more famous then the supreme leader. Tiktok, tiktok; Huawi 2.0.

weq··on Facebook's TikTok-like redesign marks sunset of social networking era
Yeh lol at the facebook is dying bot. I left social media 5yrs ago (no fb, never used tiktok). I remmeber MySpace and how i left it for FB.

You cant build a buisness on a bubble. You can build a bubble and extract money from investors, but honestly, the only people who use facebook are doing it because they are addicted and likely not internet savy. Its like hooking people on sugar. Except fb doesnt own the sugar, and cant only buy up the competition for so long before your no longer the hot stuff investors belevied.

Facebook is a fad. Social media is not, it has overtaken traditional media in less then a decade. Social media will morph, it is not static. You cant own it. And Facebook is not the defination of it anymore.

weq··on The Global Cost of Corrosion
This was true in the 60s and 70s for Jap cars, they didnt make them to rust, they just didnt rust prevent like they do now. Go watch youtube and watch some rust belt mechanics like south main auto and u will see what what cars rust and what cars last now (hint, US made cars dont even last 10yrs with salt)

I personally drive a jap car from the 90s and 400+k on the clock. I can fix everything myself including rebuilding anything i need. My wipers arnt controlled by a CANN BUS, they use a simple mechanical switch. There is a new killer on the block that makes corrision look like childs play - its called computers. Cars these days are literly THROW away with the amount of electronics on them. Replacing the guage cluster on a new econo-car like a hyuandi can cost upwards of 8k. Instance write-off, doesnt matter that the engines wont lost 150k, because the electronics that manage it are discontinued way before that. Got a broken wire in your loom? thats 5k to replace.

weq··on Your compliance obligations under the UK’s Online Safety Bill
The UK exists right now as a shell company City of London who are the tax havean bankers of the world. The UK knows your financial secrets, and thats how they keep themselves relevant.
weq··on Your compliance obligations under the UK’s Online Safety Bill
AS an australian, i am sick to death of dealing with the legacy of the UK and wish nothing more then this to come true. Unfortunately, the UK is the worlds offshore banker, makers of the tax haven scam. Thats how they maintain their power post colonialism.
weq··on Your compliance obligations under the UK’s Online Safety Bill
Are you living under a rock? Do you not see whats happening in China? Go checkout youtube... You can see clearly what happens when the gov finally has total control... (after a few years of everyone bypassing, they will make using a VPN the punishable by death). First they did it with illicit drugs, created a wide wide laws to control the social classes, now the socail classes are easier to target more wholistically via the internet because everyone is dependant on it.
weq··on Coinbase is reportedly selling geolocation data to ICE
This a stupid statement thats NEVER been TRUE. No one state has ever existed in utopia its own vacume without immigrants. its a complete falasy without any basis in reality, much like religion, its pushed by the conservatives as a way to maintain repression.

ICE is just a continuation of slavery. If Central/South Americans didnt continue to be leveraged by EVERYONE in the economy then there would be no american dream for them quest over the boarder for.

weq··on Coinbase is reportedly selling geolocation data to ICE
Capitalism exists to eat all else. Every class has its own destiny.
weq··on Kaspersky: Poorly detected backdoor targeting governments and NGOs around globe
Or maybe its calling people out for intentionally not detecting this backdoor because of whom it benefits?
weq··on Wasting time in tech interviews
then you can work at a FAANG company and get payed handsomely to lock up all that talent selling people things they dont need through ads!!!! Some people see NASA and think of all the smart people who worked there and what they did. me, i see talent wasted on war and i imagine all the great things that these people could of done if they applied their talents to something meaningful.
weq··on Leetcode Considered Harmful
There is a subset of the community use l33tcode as an employeer screening process, so please, dont shout this stuff too loudly.

If you wernt such an evil company you wouldnt need to pay people so much money to work on your ad data scam.

weq··on FTC action against Harley-Davidson and Westinghouse for limiting right to repair
bananas!!!
weq··on The Grug Brained Developer
The longer you are a developer, the more you see fads a cylic just like anything else in this world. rebranding happens every 5 to 10 years for most things.
weq··on TerraUSD crash led to vanished savings, shattered dreams
Im sorry but a high horse for betting on the slave traders vs betting on crypto. NUP. Money breeds money. the whales (1%ers) on index funds are doing it investing in the companies that are destroying the world. Displacing millions of people a year, causing corruption and famine, funneling offshore into tax havens.

Crypto has a LONG way to go before it gutters into the dirty tactics of the stock market.

weq··on The $10m OMG Fund

weq··on Internet drama in Canada
Murdoch bought the government to screw the NBN / stop TTN -- so his cable network would profit for longer. its that simple.

Australia is NOT the example to follow, its worse then Canada they sold the public network to a private entity who then sold it back to them 10yrs later. EXACTLY the same situation. BUT WORSE!

weq··on The billable hour is a trap into which more and more of us are falling
I was in a lawtech startup and this is the EXTACT reason why i left and the reason why its hocky-stick never evolved. Sure they have customers, but they cant retain or grow.

Lawyers get paid less the more efficent things are. Thats not a thing they desire, nore incentivize. Eventually they will come, kicking and screaming, but dont hold your breath.

weq··on Lofi.co – Relax and Focus
Been listening to these channels most of my programming career.

https://di.fm + somafm

this network it has many sister channels including https://zenradio.com

soundcloud can be good, once it knows your preferences, but to much random stuff and volume changes happen that i switched back to di now. di has a treasure shows now for each genre which basically what i used to use SC for so im set.

hos.com get s special mention

weq··on Tell HN: The loneliness of a pretty good developer
Ive moved between segments unlike alot of devs. the experience you have for me highlights just how degraded the dev community has become.

ie. in defence, the standard is always ok to great devs. In Enterprise, its a mix of crap, crappier and ok and great.

What your doing is holding up the team of crappy to ok devs. the fact that you cant have technical converations anymore just highlights this.

weq··on FairEmail stopping development after Google falsely flags app as spyware
I work on a cross-platform App used by millions of of people and one day during event that runs on our App google blacklisted out domain as phishing (for all of chromes) because we had too many dots url in the url and too many requests coming into the service to quickly.

So even IF you DO get past the ban-hammer, there is always another ban-hammer just round the corner if you app gets too much traction.

Google is great until you get caught in the web of censorship. Apple is great on the surface but a hot-mess of bugs under the hood.

Devs at chrome seem more compentant then the devs who work who on webkit. Both just serve to reinforce parent companies positions. The APIs that the parent companies use, most of the time, the rest of the APIs, its anyones guess when they will break release to release.

weq··on South Korea Turns to Surveillance as ‘Ghost Surgeries’ Shake Faith in Hospitals
This happens in the US too - its rife in any place with surigical tourism.
weq··on Netflix lays off about 150 employees
No!

Jordan is famous but bloody lonely. His essentially a degen gambler. The biggest tool you could imagine.

But hey, he plays BBall well!

To all us on the outside, all i see is wasted talent, locked up, for the money and the prestiege. Who are so smart, they cant even build a profitable product!

weq··on Netflix lays off about 150 employees
I cant beleive they say with a straight face they have a dream when when they cant even implement a search catalogue correctly!

People are leaving netflix because its value propersition is sh*t. Its dream-team algorithm is eating its profit and so full of wankers no one has noticed.

The amount of times ive herad an ex-netflixer tell me they never saw the content i saw is just the writing on the wall.

You had an early mover advantage and the dream team dropped the ball! The only reason your a house-hold name is because of account sharing your users will never pay what will make you profitable. People have left Network TV and the news. Creators no longer dream of Hollywood. Actors are moving to direct to fan engagements. Movies are just re-hashing classics.

The world has moved on.

weq··on Mullvad VPN now accepts Monero payments
This is exactly how crypto solves the problem that another thread said Google was solving with your phone number. Phone numbers are expensive them say!

Its a put up or shutup kinda system. Fund your wallet with $100, hold it, and we will let you post that reaction to a news article after its been held continiusly for 30 days, and automatically delete is as soon as its unfunded.
