weq··on Johnson and Johnson reaches deal for $8.9B talc settlement
Because Captailism has corrupted our institutions to the point that money rules everything. Democracy and Justice is only for those with enough cash. Like the big4 accounting firms, they arnt the big 4 because they serve the public the public interest. They are the goto because they have the influence and the knowledge to extract as much cash as possible from democracies.
weq··on I don't want streaming music, I just want to stream my music
I have music constantly on in my life, but you know what, i really hate hearing the same songs over and over again. I used to leech music and have a collection of it (i still do) but i prefer humans mixing it up, in random orders, with different sythns, styles or vibes over it. So while i have never subscribed to any streaming services, i do subscribe to DI.FM. I get access from any device i have, as many as i want, and instead of scouring the net constantly for new music, i now just feed off the bounty. They have sister stations for all styles.

Literly i have music on all day everyday. I have different styles for different moods, times of the day, emotions. When you listen at that rate, you either love repeats or you spend your whole life looking for the next song. Curating a playlist is most of the battle.

weq··on China plans to ban exports of rare earth magnet tech
> Somebody for sure is willing to sell general purpose chips to China second hand at a more expensive price.

The US is stopping people from selling high tech chips to China. Have you not heard of this policy?

I tenat to agree that Xi Jing Ping is distracted with retaining power like all the other democractic polticians are. Instead of left vs rights, its ultra left-ist faction against faction, corruption and profiteering in the CCP is rife. Every day enough figure gets sent to death it would seem after falling out of favour.

weq··on Music Labels Win Legal Battle Against YouTube-Dl’s Hosting Provider
haha whenever one of these threads come up i claim that i was the first person to write a tool in this category because it was too hard to watch google video (youtube wasnt as popular yet) on my 56k modem.

https://gvdownloader.sourceforge.net/

I updated it a few times, but google became more aggressive as all the freeware vendors started to add it to their catelogs and promote it. it wasnt a game i was prepared to play, although i probably could of made some decent cash from it if i pursued it.

weq··on PWAs in App Stores
Apple took a very long time to implement HTML5 standards in safari. I think it was 1-2years ago when i found a bug in their indexDb.get call.

been deploying native apps cross compiled from c# with PWA interfaces to app stores for years, so they are possible, u just got to work within the guidelines.

weq··on Show HN: Live coaching app for remote SWE interviews, uses Whisper and GPT-4
Thanks for the advice - this is a cool technique and yeh im ex defence! its funny as this remote-video stuff is hardly ever reviewed by the clients anyway in my experience, that this stage in its maturity they use it basically as a bluff. Dont discount the use of manual reviews though, our software would pickup anomolies if your moving your mouth constantly.

We have organised crime targetting our events, they have done things like infiltrate IT departments and trojen horse PCs. For high-stakes, we advise clients that in person inviligation in combination with LDBs is the safest way with a freshly provisioned SOE.

If you want to make this your job, work remotely and like C#, u can find our careers page with this hint: 3F27483F97C94ECF0C8F11148FBBD048DFFCDECBE5C62FA23076297AE804F6C6 Send us an unsolicated resume and say ur from HN LDB

My cross platform c# apps are used by millions of students weekly to take assessments. We try and work as close with the OS venders as possible to implement lockdowns via native Kiosk functionality (ive posted bugs with all the majors MS/Google/Chrome/Android/Apple as their updates/move fast attitudes are probably my biggest enermies right now). We sometimes cant though and have to find other means because our clients demand we support xOS because vendors agreesively push hardware onto students. We definitely arnt spywhere, schools are very much against anything that will phone home alot of the time. We have pentests and issues like every other game/app in this cat and mouse race but as soon as you close our app it done, nothing lingers.

ChatGTP is a growing problem but we have defenses against it (until its on device maybe?). Things like Frida are probably worse right now.

weq··on The Death of a Technical Skill (2020) [pdf]
Yeh exactly. AI was trained on real data, and in a few years, there will only be AI versions of real data to run off. ie. alot of that really crappy code will be deployed to github, and the result will be that and more shitty code will be written.

Thats pretty much what has happened over the last 30 years. You need less skills to produce more and more. Google search started it all, i remmeber back then I quipped the Offshored devs wouldnt be able to get a job without an internet connection because previously us engineers prided ourselves on understand and memorising APIs. The Ai programmer will outpace India's cert mills in quick succession but it wont benifit anyone except the Large Corperations who own the Ai. Atleast the Google devs added questions to SO, the AI dev is leecher who only profits, plagerises, never contributes.

weq··on De-cloud and de-k8s – bringing our apps back home
Depends on the industry and barrier of entry. If your in one with alot of compliance overheads your are outsourcing alot more them compute and storage to your cloud provider. Hiring inhouse in that same case its extremely expensive unless you are over a certain size.

This article seems written by someone who gets excited by shiney objects / hype trains.

weq··on A world to win: WebAssembly for the rest of us
Silverlight lives on! i started in SL 1.0 and moved onto Xamarin and now to .NET7. Its the same code, same concepts, just different conventions around the APIs.

For me, WebAssembly is another target. ive been building webview based app UIs with (usually) native backends, cross platform for atleast 10yrs now. I still use libraries i made for SL because PCL was just the first evolution of dotnet! Life is good on the MS gravey train! Im running the same code literly everywhere, backend, frontend, UI, mobile, tablet, cloud. THE SAME CODE, just thin bootstrappers and OS specific impls of various services.

The best part of WASM i think is that i can write services in different languages, for specific purposes, if i ever need to. Yep, i can use scheme or haskell if the need fits, but c# has been evolving too and i can write functional anyways. Im not in the industry where a thin abstraction causes me scaling issues, but i am in one where its hard to find good devs, and usually they can read c# and pick it up quickly no matter their preferred poison.

weq··on 40% of the code GitHub Copilot users check-in is AI generated and unmodified
Copilots positioned to optimise what i call "Google developer" flow. These are commadonity devs every workplace has who dont really know how to code, but rather know how to ask google questions to get the code they can slap together to meet a AC.

On the other side you have devs who have AI in their head. They often use tools to optimise their flow. Ive always used resharper as a developer and think autocomplete is certainly a developer efficiency improver. 99% of the suggestions resharper makes, i checkin. Thats why i use it, it has less fuzz because it doesnt try to be everything.

Pressing alt+tab and scrolling through some search results isnt something that adds overhead to my flow - after 30yrs im pretty good filtering content.

I do alot of PoCs though, so if i wanted to write in a language i didnt understand, i think copilot can improve my flow somewhat to get me to serach terms that will benifit me quicker.

Overall im still a few years away from relying on AI to help me code. Its going to be great for retirement though, if i had a family and kids it would allow me to checkout of self-paced learning while still maintaining my edge.

weq··on Nationwide Ban on TikTok Inches Closer to Reality
1) The CCP 2) They are, but they wont be, because they helped him win.

Its an uncomfortable thought but the media and kings have always had parasitic relationships.

We dont need to get into the forced organ harvesting stuff too do we? You know, THE THING that happens when you say "no" to one too many times to the CCP or become more famous then whinne the poo?

weq··on Why So Many Tech Companies Are Laying People Off Right Now
Its not just tech companies, its capitalism eating itself in hype cycles of bulls and bears.
weq··on Who knew the first AI battles would be fought by artists?
The problem with "AI" here is that it copies like no other. It copies everything and learns everything like a master because it is fed off a us.
weq··on Riffusion – Stable Diffusion fine-tuned to generate music
Plunderers; well put. Capitalists cant lie their way to infinite growth forcasts and suck all the wealth into 401ks that do nothing but rob everyone elses grand children. Its a cycle that has been going on since existance itself, an ebb and flow that accelerates, crashes, and takes off again leaving its wake humanity as we know it.
weq··on I found a bug in SQLite
Thats exactly the point of a regression test suite and shows that millions of tests work at giving confidence in a major SQL provider to release a fix to prod so quickly....
weq··on Bitcoin Post-Mortem
My mate worked with Craig at CenterBet. Its interesting how this name is now international. My mate wouldnt decribe him as a genius, but did receive emails from him in this era on the topic that his law team has been interested in.

Small world.

weq··on Real-time dialogue between experimenters and dreamers during REM sleep (2021)
Learning about Lucid dreaming is a worthy investment of effort that can be rewarding everytime you rest your eyes which is over 50% of your life if you get enough. I used to struggle with sleep, getting to sleep, staying asleep. I dreamt alot.

It takes some time, but with just a basic technique about becoming alert and staying asleep at the same time, it can be assecible to all. I started out by trying to fly, progressed to completely orchestrating dreamscapes including summonsing different dream charactors at will.

weq··on Accelerated forgetting of a trauma event after a single dose of hydrocortisone
Games will only cover up the symptoms. My ex-wife was a doctor who was struggling with c-ptsd that she could not treat otherwise she would loose her accreditation. She used Candy Crush everyday to reduce the impact of the PTSD on her life, unsuccessfully. I had to leave. She was a ball of rage that was always on the precipious of a full blown flash back. She said it kept her "mentally fit for the job", but i saw it was the only way she could be be idle without it creeping back into her mind. There were only so many hours between shifts, and at work she felt value and could forgot, mostly.
weq··on To Hell with Facebook (2021)
Yet, i still appreciate Fb? why? it has an uncanny ability to group together likeminded individuals. No need to read tabloids, get your junk food pushed to your phone.
weq··on Ford F-150 Lightning: Fast Truck, Slow Computer

weq··on Why did Airbnb dump React Native? (2021)
This is what u get for jumping on a bandwagon, instead I got my company to invest in a Software companies tech.

The same Xamarin app i built in 2014, still runs, on .net7. MS nailed crossplatform in a way that an ad company is never going to invest in. They needed to nail cross-platform to keep themselves as a company relevant; they lost the platform war, then redefined it.

Just launched more apps on the platform this year, love it to death. SAme skills i learnt in silverlight, still relevant 10yrs later. Share 90% of code across every platform; and that 10% is built on native wrapped libraries which are generated off every release. MS has the infrastructure and investment like no ad or book store would ever.

weq··on Prometheus: Fuel from the Air
They are more efficent because they last longer then current battery tech. China has miles of graveyards of green energy veichles. they are environmental hazzards after their useful life and run off rare earth minerals. not sustainable in any sense of the word; other then being an alternative source of fuel.
weq··on Prometheus: Fuel from the Air
And destroy the earth. Hydro is not green energy, its an energy tradeoff. nuclear is much greeener then hydro. with nuclear, its only a possibility of screwing the environment. with damns, its garenteed.

weq··on Apple tells employees to work at the office three times per week starting Sept
Then tell the dammed FANNG recruiters to keep to the collage kids and stop with the linkedin.

They need devs to grow their revenue, these companies were built on attracting talent. That was the 00s.

Gone are the days where people were gullable enough to think have an inhouse chef was for the employees benifit. lets face it, bigtech would tape you to a chair, itubate both ends and pump processed nutriants through your system if they had a choice.

weq··on Win32 Is the Only Stable ABI on Linux?
.NET5+ its my choice as a SME with this challenge. I run the same code across every device and only support what MS supports. These days u could likely redo this with a webview and wasm... Let the webview handle the graphics abstraction for you!
