wendroid··on Unix How-To: File Updates in Linux
It would be a sad day if your programming language didn't have stat.

Inotify is only present if your Linux-kernel is compiled with it turned on. If you want to use it in shell scripts there's inotify-tools (that's the Debian name anyway). Sadly GNU got their grubby fingers in and invented the stupid D-BUS.

In FreeBSD there's kqueue which does a similar job.

Seems an odd thing to drift into the list as it is quite mature software now, I berated Russ for doing it as I felt it diluted Plan9, I'm glad I was wrong and he didn't listen.

Once you learn rc shell you might find other shells to be bloated, verbose and whitespace fussy. The only complaint I've ever heard was job control, well that's because job contgrol is the kernel's job and it seems that when implementing /proc someone forgot the ctl file.

On Plan9 one does

    echo stop|start > /proc/$pidn/ctl
to stop or start a job

I think you have a bad setup. I've been using p9p for years as my main desktop and I know 10s of others that do the same.

try setting your font= variable in $home/lib/profile

You can also mail the dev mailing list and see if anyone can help you.

Do you not get output like the screenshots ?

wendroid··on Lightning - A new and faster way to use your shell
I'm aware that they both have dependencies Plumb still looks miles more attractive. % plumb /path/to/file.c:21 will open file.c at line 21 right clicking in Acme will do it automatically, I can feel the win from here
wendroid··on Lightning - A new and faster way to use your shell
It's liek writing a shell script for every library, except now you're stuck typing commands so you need to carry it with you.

Plus I don't like TAB completion. If you can't remember where everything is maybe you should organise it better instead of drawing more maps.

wendroid··on Lightning - A new and faster way to use your shell
looks like a nightmare

For Unix clones everywhere there's the tried and tested Plan9 Plumber that uses Regular Expression Matching to perform any action you desire

For the example rules see the base set

That's an amazing claim. Or you don't know what an Operating System is.

wendroid··on The Upside-Down "e" - an Editor's Nightmare (1993)
Bitmap fonts are easy. I made a truetype font in the 1990s using CorelDraw so I know that's not hard. Keyboard maps, again trivial. And don't discount the power of a felt tip when it comes to marking a keyboard.
wendroid··on The Upside-Down "e" - an Editor's Nightmare (1993)
Painful to read something easily solved by free software, even in 1993

Sadly I learned this long ago.

The only thing I've seen make political change is some form of direct action. Waving banners does absolutely FUCK ALL unless it's for something for which they can throw you a bone.

wendroid··on Digital Economy Bill mashup: 40 MPs turned up
Well, obviously (hopefully) I was being a bit facetious. They are qualified to object to Mandy's licence to print legislation. But surely the Great Firewall of Britain and whathaveyou should be stood up to at all levels, you don't need to be a "nerd, fanatic or zealot" to see that (thanks Austin Mitchell for alientating me in one sentence - and you're trying to appeal to me!).

"join the Pirate Party "

Great, thanks for destroying my livelihood. Where's the funding for the British Film Industry supposed to come from then?

wendroid··on IBM: Back to the Bad Old Days? - ESR
One of the parallels is that Microsft took one of IBM's patent architects to help them build their portfolio. I can't find his name right now :(
wendroid··on IBM: Back to the Bad Old Days? - ESR
No ESR, the Bad Old Days was when IBM did the IT for the Third Reich.

wendroid··on DragonFly BSD swapcache: using SSD as filesystem cache
What goes around comes around. Many of the techniques being announced for today's SMP systems is the stuff that was being done on big MPP machines by NEC / Intel / Fujitsu / Cray / Thinking Machines in the 1990s.

see http://www.amazon.co.uk/Advanced-Computer-Architecture-Proce...

It seems to me that the techniques that were in silicon then are being brought into kernels today. Crays ran a modified BSD4.3. All we need now is someone to say Hypercube.

Today's HPC is pretty messy. Driven by MPI and Fortran they have even pushed the Linux kernel out of contention by using OS-Bypass because the kernel is too slow getting bytes on the wire. In Plan9 we are experimenting with Syscall currying to reduce latency

http://iwp9.quanstro.net/papers/usecsys.pdf

I've drifted a bit because I wanted to use this quote :

"You want to make your way in the CS field? Simple. Calculate rough time of amnesia (hell, 10 years is plenty, probably 10 months is plenty), go to the dusty archives, dig out something fun, and go for it. It's worked for many people, and it can work for you." - Ron Minnich

oh if you liked that pdf here's another one about Plan9 on the Blue Gene

wendroid··on How “Dirty” MP3 Files Are A Back Door Into Cloud DRM
Shows how much you know.

I unknowingly buy tainted MP3s from a retailer. Under the doctrine of first sale I can re-sell these MP3s. So now I legally sell a full mp3 player or maybe lose it and someone hands it into the police but I never claim it. The new owner now has a means to do me harm.

wendroid··on What To Do When A Hard Drive Fails
I smile to myself that all my data is replicated in a Venti store and accessible by date. Bonus smiles when I tell you one of the redundancies is I keep it in 500Mb encrypted blocks on an insecure server.
wendroid··on Amazing feats of Clang Error Recovery
As "amazing" as this different type of error correction is, doesn't it point to the fact that C++ is hopeless in and of itself.

When I'm using a language, alarm bells ring when I find myself needing to type something like :

std::vector<char> v(std::istream_iterator<char>(ifs), std::istream_iterator<char>());
