weirdcat··on Hello Heroku World - Autobenching Heroku
Python/Bottle dismal performance here is in line with Nicholas Piël's fingings regarding WSGIRef server:

Disqualified servers: (...) WSGIRef, I obtained a reply rate of 352 but it stopped reacting when we passed the 1900 RPS mark

weirdcat··on IPhone App Gets You To Eat Better, Using The Crowd's IQ
Yeah, but by adding all of those opinions and averaging them we probably get quite a decent idea of a given food quality.

Plus, since you'd (hopefully) be embarrassed to put a pic of that bag of cheetos to public scrutiny, as long as you keep snapping absolutely everything you eat, it should work great in curbing your tendencies to eat junk food.

weirdcat··on Little Printer prints you a beautiful mini-newspaper.
Unfortunately the printouts wouldn't last for more than a few years (Little Printer uses thermal printing).
weirdcat··on Study Shows Why It’s Hard to Keep Weight Off
Note that for a year the subjects were on a "maintenance diet", which most probably was intended to limit their calorie intake to match their daily energy expenditure, and still gained some of the weight back.

A fair approach would be to allow me to use the thing for a day without "liking" it. Then they could say "Like it so far? Then click the Like button and listen on!" and only after that keep me out if I don't.

I don't think they'd get much fewer likes this way and at least they would be genuine. Plus, since more users would sign up to test the service, perhaps the numbers would even play to their advantage.

weirdcat··on Testing IE6, 7, 8 and 9 on Mac OS X
A little twist on that I use is setting up three XP IE6 machines and upgrading IE to 7 and 8 in two of them (for IE9 you still need Windows 7). Takes up significantly less disk space and RAM; the downside is you have to repeat the procedure every few months.

Note: you need to duplicate the vhd files using VBoxManage, since straight file copies share UUID and you will not be able to add them in VirtualBox):

VBoxManage clonehd in.vhd out.vhd

weirdcat··on Show HN: My weekend project - preview TV sizes on your wall
I don't expect much really, but who knows, maybe I'm totally wrong and it buys me a jet. We'll see. :)

I'll probably cook up a blog post about the experience and post it here.

weirdcat··on Show HN: My weekend project - preview TV sizes on your wall
I don't know, I kind of like the sofa. Standing behind it you can take in the whole room, not just the compare the screen with the speakers. Besides, this was the coolest photo I could buy. :)

I'm adapting it for other uses; hit me up at notabing -at- gmail.com
weirdcat··on Show HN: My weekend project - preview TV sizes on your wall
I did think of that, but that would be quite tougher to build and hardly a weekend thing.
weirdcat··on Show HN: My weekend project - preview TV sizes on your wall
This is actually something I've removed in the process, trying to simplify things.
weirdcat··on Show HN: My weekend project - preview TV sizes on your wall
Yeah, that's definitely in the plans. I'm a projector guy myself. :)
weirdcat··on Show HN: My weekend project - preview TV sizes on your wall
For the MVP I precompiled a list of 3 top selling TVs of all sizes. If it proves to be worth it, I'll add periodic autoupdate for the list and visitor country check, but it still will be prefetched (so yeah, something in between).
weirdcat··on Show HN: My weekend project - preview TV sizes on your wall
By the way, I'm looking for a partner to release it as an iOS app. Anybody game?

Good point. Didn't think about it, thanks. I removed the hash update for the time being.

But of course, and they do! :)

weirdcat··on Awesome-Fontstacks: free web fonts with failsafes to back them up
Some kind of filter, e.g. based on tags would be great (serif, sans-serif, geometric, humanist, script etc.)
weirdcat··on HackerBuddy
A detail: I miss titles below the icons representing various skills. I really hate to have to mouseover just to check what a cup of coffee means. I know it looks cooler without text, but usability suffers.
weirdcat··on HackerBuddy
Maybe you could use the best of both approaches by presenting the most popular/important/broad tags (e.g. PHP, usability, CPC) as a suggested list while allowing users to add their own, more specific or less popular tags (e.g. drupal, memcached, adsense, appengine).
weirdcat··on Ask HN: Redesign after HN critique (instant "coming soon" pages app)
Ha, looks neat! And with a little hacking it might work in other browsers as well. Isn't the shadow black though? It would mean that in my case it needs to be dynamically adjusted to the font color chosen by the user (probably by generating a fresh css snippet and applying it to the page). I'll definitely give it a try later -- these jagged edges in Windows made me cringe. :) Thanks a lot!
weirdcat··on Ask HN: Redesign after HN critique (instant "coming soon" pages app)
Yeah, I thought of that. Nice thing is that "soon here" is a brand easily expandable into anything startup related.
weirdcat··on Ask HN: Redesign after HN critique (instant "coming soon" pages app)
I actually do include hosting; if possible, I'd rather not walmartize the thing and be a "cheap no-brainer" though.
weirdcat··on Ask HN: Redesign after HN critique (instant "coming soon" pages app)
Thanks! I noticed the resizable textareas in Chrome as well; it's on my bug list. I'll look into the centering thing -- I wasn't able to replicate it so far (Chrome on a mac).

About me targeting hackers -- I simply assumed, that a lot of people in need of hosted coming soon pages peruse HN. I know I do. :)

Re. freemium -- there is a free version (no emails, one page) tucked below the paid plans, 37 Signals style. I'll think about exposing it more -- I wouldn't want to add email to the free plan, because it involves more user support and is used only by serious users, which should afford $9 anyway.

Thanks everyone! Looks like this time I did a bit better. :)

To address some issues raised:

1. Hosting is included; the user has to set the domain's CNAME to sites.soonhere.com. The page is also accessible via http://soonhere.com/site/whatever.com, so it's easy to set up a framed redirect if needed. I'll create a downloadable index.html for this purpose if it's an option people would use.

2. There are some additional data collected with visitors' emails (referrer, search engine keywords, country). You can export it to csv (everything) or plain txt (emails only).

I added this info to the plans page; will add more details and polish it later.

One question -- did those of you that said it's too expensive thought it was hosted or not hosted?

After you sign up, there's a "gathered emails" pane for every site in the admin panel; you can export all of the data to CSV or only emails to plain txt.

Good feature ideas. I'll look into that after I fix the homepage.

Thanks!

weirdcat··on Ask HN: review my app for instant "coming soon" pages
Actually, the harsher the better. The problem is falling in love with your own idea -- here it was combining:

* the introduction (the header),

* "plans and pricing" page (you've got two blocks: the FREE plan and the PRO plan),

* page creation interface with live preview below, allowing you to create the page and previewing it before signing up.

All of those separately make total sense, but obviously don't work when combined.

Thanks a lot!

Great idea! I think I can see it. I'll have to sleep on it and try to build it tomorrow. Thanks!
