weej··on The forgotten 80s home robot trend
I have a lot of fond memories with the Radio Shack Robie Junior robot. As a kid, this was a great introduction to robotics.

weej··on Comcast, AT&T and Verizon pose a greater surveillance risk than Facebook
I agree with you, but there is one key difference...you are paying your ISP for the service. Google, FB, etc. provide free service offerring in exchange for your data.

If ISPs are going to monetize customers traffic then their terms of use better damn well call that out.

There is potential here for new business model for privacy based ISPs (ex: think duckduckgo for ISP) where customers pay a premium for such an offering.

weej··on AWS Secrets Manager – Store, Distribute, and Rotate Credentials Securely
Not to mention the Hardware Security Module(s) behind this are very expensive, especially when scaled out for redundancy and availability.
weej··on AWS Secrets Manager – Store, Distribute, and Rotate Credentials Securely
I believe that's what HC's Vault Enterprise is (hosted/SaaS): https://www.hashicorp.com/products/vault
weej··on AWS Secrets Manager – Store, Distribute, and Rotate Credentials Securely
Would be very surprised if it's not backed by AWS HSM. About 2 years ago I believe AWS KMS-->HSM was leveraging SafeNet's Luna HSM.
weej··on 20% of all Node.js modules found vulnerable to injection attacks
Doesn't mean it isn't click bait. ;-)
weej··on 20% of all Node.js modules found vulnerable to injection attacks
Key word is vulnerable. There is a gap in protection and they are at risk to being potentially exploited.
weej··on SpaceX’s Falcon Heavy successfully launches
I know. I'm rotating my desktop.
weej··on 9-5 Is Out. Try the 1-6 Instead
Fair enough.

Throw in the rain with lack of UV in Seattle - unless you live in Wales there's not many other places that get this many consecutive days of rain and low to no UV during winter.

We're both miserable. Sounds like we should get a beverage or two and bitch about weather together. Cheers.

weej··on SpaceX’s Falcon Heavy successfully launches
Loved it. Absolutely amazing. https://i.imgur.com/KF87gOR.jpg

I posted more screen shots of launch: https://imgur.com/a/gh410

weej··on SpaceX’s Falcon Heavy successfully launches
Unbelievable. The simultaneous booster landings were incredibly impressive feat. Outstanding launch and spectacular landings!

At least you see the sun. The pacific northwest is brutal this time of year. I have a massive UV lamp on my work desk. S.A.D.
weej··on No One Wants Used Clothes Anymore
Agree. See NPR's story from 2013 "The Afterlife of American Clothes" https://www.npr.org/sections/money/2013/12/10/247362140/the-...
weej··on Kodak shares up as it announces KODAKCoin cryptocurrency
Have ICOs 'jumped the shark'?

Definitely starting to feel that way with solution(s) looking for problems that don't need this complexity, reinvention of the wheel, not invented here, or hype train (FOMO).

weej··on Teens Aren’t Partying Anymore
I don't disagree, but it's also parents and nanny state mentality for enabling/coddling children. There are exceptions.

I live in USA, and my child started walking to the school bus stop alone at age 7. There's value-add in giving kids more freedom and responsibility. I see it every day that my child treats her freedom as a privilege, and gains more self confidence.

I hope this helicopter/snow plow parenting trend begins to fade in America.

weej··on Using Java 9 Modularization to Ship Zero-Dependency Apps
You need to package up the JAR with the shared object / dll and install both on the local filesystem in order for the SO to be accessible from the classpath. For example you could apply a package manager (RPM) and include the JAR and .so at install for available use.

weej··on “One Damn Slide After Another”: PowerPoint at Every Occasion for Speech (2016)
Bezo's reasoning on Amazon's no powerpoint policy: "Well structured, narrative text is what we're after rather than just text. If someone builds a list of bullet points in word, that would be just as bad as powerpoint.

The reason writing a 4 page memo is harder than "writing" a 20 page powerpoint is because the narrative structure of a good memo forces better thought and better understanding of what's more important than what, and how things are related.

Powerpoint-style presentations somehow give permission to gloss over ideas, flatten out any sense of relative importance, and ignore the innerconnectedness of ideas."

weej··on Bancor has lost more than half its value since June ICO
Yes, and I'm asking for legitimate "other stuff" that applicable for an ICO and/or blockchain. Been waiting for a while on this one.
weej··on Bancor has lost more than half its value since June ICO
ICO or block chain != open source.

Think about a smart contract that has immutable code in it that has a bug regarding shuffling of the deck or misuse/error on financial transfer. There's nothing to think about or do...it's immutable. Once released on ethereum you're out of luck.

weej··on Bancor has lost more than half its value since June ICO
Not sure I'd equate online gambling with legitimate (legal) use case. Even still if legal for use in given location (territory) why not leverage credit card or paypal?

Unless you're doing some illegal (e.g. money laundering), there's no need and zero add for cryptocurrency for gambling. I don't need a distributed ledger with block consensus and wasting power computation to carry out a merchangt transaction.

weej··on Ask HN: How’d you go from a noodler to writing large well structured programs?
One more I missed regarding review of architecture, code structure/design of OSS: The Architecture of Open Source Applications (Vol 1 & 2) https://www.amazon.com/Architecture-Open-Source-Applications...
weej··on Ask HN: How’d you go from a noodler to writing large well structured programs?
Recommended resources to consider:

* Code Complete https://www.amazon.com/Code-Complete-Practical-Handbook-Cons...

* Programming Pearls https://www.amazon.com/Programming-Pearls-2nd-Jon-Bentley/dp...

* Pragmatic Programmer https://www.amazon.com/Pragmatic-Programmer-Journeyman-Maste...

weej··on Bancor has lost more than half its value since June ICO
That's the problem. The investors for ICOs are backing on blockchain as if it's some amazing new innovation that's "going to change the world".
weej··on Bancor has lost more than half its value since June ICO
Would love to hear more on legitimate use cases for blockchain (not being sarcastic) that cannot already be solved by centralized database, merkle trees and/or public key encryption.

weej··on HashiCorp and Google: easing secret and infrastructure management
+1 Same. Automation and integration is fairly frictionless if you're on AWS.
