weddpros··on Swiss Post Suspends Drone Delivery Service After Second Crash
347 lives lost per year, or one per million people. Similar to Prion disease fatalities. Sure, that's 3 times more than lightening strikes... but that's still extremely low AND safer than whatever.

As for the risk of a plane over a populated area, I think it's safe to say that a 4kg drone is a much lesser threat than a Cessna weighing 200 times more, and that's a very small plane. So it's really not fair to compare a drone crash and a plane crash (we're not talking military drones here, I hope you've read the article).

"...I can only see delivery drones being safe with a built-in fixed wing that allows it to glide to the ground power-off below 10 mph": and it seems many people disagree but feel free to prove them wrong and show the world how you can glide a drone to the ground in a dense city to deliver blood at a hospital.

I'm baffled that technology-related accidental deaths that can be and will be reduced by technology could feel somehow unacceptable, whereas a higher risk of human caused deaths would be OK just because you hope these humans will be punished somehow.

Let's punish drones then...

weddpros··on Swiss Post Suspends Drone Delivery Service After Second Crash
I personally know someone who was killed by a UPS truck on his parking lot. Don't think randomness only happens to others.
weddpros··on Swiss Post Suspends Drone Delivery Service After Second Crash
This is an emotional answer: "any failure...potential... large weight... person... show stopper". That's emotions speaking, we need probabilities and reason instead (because a delivery truck should trigger the same fear with you but it doesn't).

Planes ARE the safest way to travel: maybe drones are the safest in certain conditions, like for these urgent hospital deliveries in Switzerland, or in dangerous/isolated settings. And maybe drones will become safer and safer, like with parachutes in the article.

Okay the parachutes will need Dyneema strings instead of simple ones, just like parachutes were used before Dyneema was invented. Oh wait, someone's working on Dyneema parachutes for drones: https://www.textilemedia.com/latest-news/mobiletex/drone-par...

As you can see, there's no reason to throw the baby out with the bathwater. Find how you can save lives and make the world better, not how to use emotions to exert power and kill Freedom. The world needs innovation more than ever, be it electronic cigarettes or self driving cars or drones.

weddpros··on When Having Friends Is More Alluring Than Being Right
Are we witnessing the birth of a new idea, something like "there is no right or wrong if it hurts people's feelings"? will "non binary truth" emerge as law?

You have the right to say anything that's wrong, and nobody can say it's wrong because that would be discriminatory, but if you say something that's right, nobody should say it's right because it would be binary thinking and discriminating? yet you can say it's wrong, because it's hurting your feelings.

Let's try to abolish logic! It will surely lead to immense happiness.

We're at the tipping point where Idiocracy becomes real (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0387808/)

weddpros··on The Problem of Mindfulness
Thank you, who doesn't like a condescendent comment...

I would reply you have no idea how much you're leaving on the table by meditating instead of using auto-hypnosis.

"I'm usually up until 1-2am": maybe a lack of good quality sleep is your real problem? Bad sleep has been correlated to weight gain
weddpros··on The Problem of Mindfulness
I'm in that boat too. Before meditation, I used to practice self-hypnosis and at the beginning, I thought they were similar. But self hypnosis helps you change your thoughts, when meditation is simply acknowledgement of thoughts, which feels useless to me.

In a sense, meditation seems very shallow, it's the very first step. Then come the techniques of self-hypnosis which lead to change and the real self-help. I don't think that acceptation is enough to make your life better, just a little less miserable.

weddpros··on Animals living alongside humans produce amylase, enzyme that breaks down starch
I agree that you won't get fat if you're limiting calories intake, I was just saying all dietary fat isn't always stored and carbs do have an impact in fat absorption.

I'm currently losing the stubborn fat I've had for all my life, just a few pounds I couldn't get rid of: only a low carb higher fat diet has finally worked for me (my BMI is normal).

Also I'm 47 (not the killer)

weddpros··on Animals living alongside humans produce amylase, enzyme that breaks down starch
storing dietary fat works best when you eat carbs, because then your body will run on carbs and carbs will spike your insuline to signal the body to store the fat. Also the insuline spikes and drops make you crave more carbs...
weddpros··on Think FaceApp is scary? Wait till you hear about Facebook
"screwing your rights/privacy": do they? Where's the million of victims? Where's the class action?

Politicians and the media are screwing us and stirring up the air.

Facebook can do its thing and show me ads for apartments in the neighbourhood I've visited (and published photos of) this afternoon, it's always more relevant than trying to sell me Viagra. I'm also gluten intolerant, so I'd rather not see ads for pizzas. I DO want more clever ads, who doesn't?

weddpros··on Think FaceApp is scary? Wait till you hear about Facebook
This article is FUD, and click bait, when the real people violating the rights to your photographs are probably hiding in government buildings, and they will use these photos against you... because you thought the threat was a Russian startup or Zuck.

The media should stop pretending they're lawyers. IANAL either but I was a pro photographer and I know there can be no FaceApp nor Facebook without you granting them rights to use your photos. If you refuse to grant them the right to use your photos: you get no FaceApp or Facebook because you'll sue them if they do whatever with your photos (which is normal). No right to publish your photos? they can't post it to Facebook without you giving them the right to it. No perpetual rights? you could sue them after 2 years for using your photos all that time, because they're still on Facebook.

Of course they need you to give them these rights. And no, they won't do bad things with your photos. Despite "owning" billions of photos, Facebook is still selling ads, not your photos.

weddpros··on Too much money and too few places to invest it
I don't think there's too much money: there are not enough GOOD ways to spend it.

Investors don't refuse to fund ethical businesses or finance saving the planet, if it can make them money. It's just that there's no good opportunity on the market.

When investors can make more money saving the planet that destroying it, the planet will be saved.

weddpros··on Alibaba founder defends overtime work culture as 'huge blessing'
The Chinese are the americans of the american continent, or the dutch of europe: they're everywhere and they have the money.

For instance, they amount for 1/3 of all of Thailand's tourism, the most touristic country in the world.

They do build amazing futuristic condos. Google "shanghai skyline". It takes time though...

And Western food is not always known for its quality: the west gave the world burgers, fries or pizzas.

In the end, I'm sure Asia is doing so well because the West thinks poorly of them and leaves them alone.

Hint: I live in Asia and I'm amazed at how so many westerners don't get Asia.

https://www.thedailybeast.com/the-ishango-bone-the-worlds-ol...

Apparently, the periods hypothesis is not favoured for a variety of reasons... And just because counting to 28 is more useful to women than men (men and women who tracked the moon phases for millennia don't agree) doesn't make it more likely to be periods counting.

Plus the numbers on the bone are not 28 but "are understood to indicate 9, 19, 21, 11; 19, 12, 13, 11; and 7, 5, 5, 10, 8, 4, 6, 3"...

9+19=28, here it is!

weddpros··on When Algorithms Think You Want to Die

Maybe it's not only algorithms that have a problem: I think it's our very belief that Instagram should do something to curb certain ideas and push others that's wrong.
